Holy shit I just died. Fucking ghost woman attacked me and ate me alive. :shock:

I thought you couldn't die.

This happened after the chiming clock sound. I went to the digital clock and watched it turn from 23:59 to 00:00, looked in the direction of where you come in and the ghost was there. It ran towards me and then attacked me from behind.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Silent Hill 2 sold the PS2 to me. This demo talk is strongly pushing me towards the nearest store with PS4s in stock. :o

For what it's worth, I thought Pan's Labyrinth was not a good film (neither was it any good kind of bad). Something that can be safely discussed in the middle of a shopping mal, like, right at the very fountain. So what good is Guillermo del Toro's involvement supposed to do?

That being said, I didn't like Pi at all too, only to find Requiem for a Dream surprisingly watchable, so maybe making bad movies happens to every filmmaker.

I like Cronos and Devil's Backbone more than Pan's Labyrinth. Although I'm not a fan of the later, it isn't mediocre trash. I think where del Toro potentially adds to Silent Hill is his absolute love of horror (take a look at his house: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0WXqEl846k) At his best, I think del Toro has some impressive ideas about imagery and design work. For instance, the angel of death sequence from Hellboy 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-rl8q9jezU) isn't out of the hellboy comics, but something either del Toro or his staff designed. My issue with del Toro is consistency. I think a lot of his films offer promising things, but rarely deliver a polished final product.

So, of Downpour and Homecoming, can anyone tell me which is least awful? Surely neither can be worse than Shattered Memories, what a bitter disappointment that was.

Downpour is less offensive, by some margin.

Homecoming is The Game Of The Movie. Tired KCET rehashes grafted onto a comically misguided Hostel/Wicker Man base. Break into the bad guys' HQ to rescue Tara Reid and Carl Winslow from Redneck Chainsaw Murderer. Beat up many security guards and sexy nurses. Witness a plot twist xerox so cynically facile, it'll make your head swim like you're huffing photocopier cleaning fluid.

A faceless monstrosity crashes through the cell block skylight, much like that Licker did in Resident Evil 2. "I'll cuff him," cracks a newly liberated Carl, "you read him his rights." Ohoho!

Downpour is also not without major flaws, chiefly a multiple choice narrative that implodes its attempt at character study. But it at least adheres to the isolation and surreal tone of the KCET series. And although its story arc is well within the SH2 comfort zone, it does contribute some distinct, compellingly dark material. Better creature designs, a less "carny funhouse" otherworld, and most of all a stable narrative would've helped.

The sad part is that much like SH2 vs SH3, the games with really strong plots always seem to have the weaker combat in the series.

Cheers BIL, guess I'll give Downpour a try. Just realised I owe key ever played the first hour or two of 3, but realistically my easiest way of starting that now would be the HD collection.

Konami have no idea what foolishness they just did.

I believe that when MGSV comes out, it will be huge. And Silent Hill is still a very well known franchise in the west. And with the people behind it, it could have been an event.
And they just pissed it all away.

It's enough to make you cry.

^Yeah, PT had a viral following aswell, even among the youtube kiddies so there was a hell of a lot more interest than downpour ever had already, I think.

I just realized that unless Del Toro is up for contract, realistically all that is being lost here is the franchise...such as it is. Honestly I think that whatever they put together might have a much better market chance if they go independent and market it as "Del Toro and Kojima present...Something Scary." They really don't need the franchise, sounds like. It is painful to lose some of the iconic monsters and other things that they might have been able to get access to, not to mention the funding issue, but goodness knows they tried.

It's funny how Konami adopted a similar "scorched earth" policy with Skullgirls, trying to get it delisted from the PSN store after they forced them to switch publishers. They are pretty terrible.

Indeed. I'm standing by what I said in the Kojima thread, and have already trademarked the suggested title. Open to interested bidders with the right credentials!

Least of my concerns tbh - the series was at its strongest when it kept iconography to a minimum. Part of what makes Origins and Homecoming feel so tacky is the recycling of popular material that KCET themselves were usually quick to sideline, if not retire outright. (SH3 is aesthetically much less distinct than their other three games, but it's got some justification with it being the lone direct sequel)

"Mundane locale where crazy metaphysical stuff may or may not happen" was always the only important constant of the series.

The absolute best thing that could come out of this, is if Kojima Productions formed a company, like Clover did with Platinum. I really hope they don't fall apart. He has a lot of cred, and could get some serious backing. Especially if MGSV is the hit, that it looks to be.
Then we could get that Del Toro/Kojima "scary game". I think fans would be totally fine with this.
We're used to getting alternatives from teams that came from the companies who once delivered. Instead of DMC..Bayonetta. Instead of RE...Evil Within. There's a long list. Mighty No. 9 isn't looking that great...but there are no Mega Man games coming out, so I guess that's...something?

I hope this doesn't mess Kojima, or his studio, up too bad.

Also, Del Toro is pretty damn loyal, when he hooks up with someone he likes. He worked for ages with Mike Mignola to get Hellboy, and Hellboy 2 made. Against all odds. So if it can happen, I'm sure he would be fine about chipping in.

The thing that concerns me is that there are so many "Atelier" style small game dev houses, against all the other expense trends in the industry. This might be relevant to the future of Konami licenses as well (of course we've seen experiments with this in the past as well; Gradius V is the obvious example). There has to be a stable source of funding and all the business back-end stuff as well. Maybe this is just a sign the industry is maturing, as you do get small production houses and the like in the rest of the entertainment biz. There's no particular model that has to be followed here - some companies will follow the "big studio" Hollywood model; others will be IP clearing houses with francises grown brittle and crusty with years of protective slobber; others can be more interested in change and novelty instead of pursuing a corporate identity (Disney owns Marvel after all, but I don't think the fears Marvel would shrivel up completely were realized). We are already seeing video game arms of traditional media firms getting beefed up, of course. I don't think it is totally unthinkable that Del Toro (or somebody else) will not one day be pitching a media campaign that includes a game made with Kojima, and the backing comes from a movie studio (or a multimedia firm - Disney, even).

I don't disagree with what you say. But when I hear this statement, I cringe. In my eyes, it's not really maturing, as much as it is aging, and turning into a senile old man.

Unless we're talking about Dragon Age 3 "mature". :wink:

Yeah, I get that! I'm usually not a big fan of the "IP clearinghouse" model of some company taking the same old franchises, targeting and protecting them obsessively, and farming out the work - but development funds have to come from somewhere and certainly a Disney (or the like) can offer a lot of freedom to smaller developers to not worry. Of course we thankfully have some other options in gaming, so that services like Steam, the console distribution services, and GoG take over some of the functions that would still be held by a Disney in old media, and there's lots of other companies doing specialized work (i.e., Havoc's physics middleware).

Yet I still think that a big company probably can organize all this stuff pretty efficiently, as well as be able to keep things better controlled than if you were running a small company trying to make the game but also run paychecks, deal with an outside promoter, get legal advice, etc. when the big company may well be able to have some people do that work cheaper because they're also working on other games, and plus it's targeted towards games, so the legal counsel is better about games than some random firm, the promotions are going to be better for games, and the paychecks...well, the paychecks will still be as small as possible, but what's new? :mrgreen:
