 Awesome work ek! I still am working on a Psikyo clear.

Jealous!
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Thanks. Your achievements in Dragon Blaze and Strikers 1999 were a great source of inspiration for me.

Maybe one day I'll be half as good as you are!

I was on a DFK 1.5 kick this weekend. I got the 1CC for Bomb when I stopped hoarding bombs and used them pretty aggressively during stages...

I was determined to 1CC Power style with type B too. You get so many damn hypers, but the extend feels very daunting to get in the loop. I had so many nmnb runs to stage 5 where I just DIED REPEATEDLY to the Tigerlily wheels. My 1CC run was one I thought I'd just die (I had no extra lives left after the first part of the laserwheels) but I somehow got through the last Tigerlily appearance unscathed for the first time, and earned the last extend in the section before Shooty.

I ended up not even needing the extend, no missed Shooty. o_o

Nice SFT, guess that was at Frenetics? I hear there is a lot more slowdown on PCB, did you find it noticeable, particularly in the second half of stage 4?

I finally hit a couple C scores today, BABY STEPS!!!

Yeah, was played at Frenetic's. I made a trip out to pick borrow his XCapture-1 for streaming from Stunfest (which we are going to try to do in English, yeeeeeaaaaaaah!) and met up with him and GDLKscrub. We went to a fighting game tournament, then ate delicious curry, then went to an arcade, and then when we finally made it back to Frenetic's house I cleared with Momo on my first try :3

I honestly am not sure how the slowdown is different... it definitely is, but I feel like it's "Ibara-style" slowdown where the entire game speed is faster on the port by a slight but noticeable amount. I definitely had an excellent run (it was to the point where I was having to suicide lives to keep myself under max stock throughout the first four stages), but I'm not sure how much of that was due to playing on PCB vs. the combination of cab (bigger screen, and for whatever reason I almost always play better on cab), good luck, recent Momo practice on the port, etc. etc. etc.

Congrats on the C scores -- that's awesome man! I still can't play Batrider worth a damn hahaha

@endoKarb: That's a mighty impressive achievement, congratulations! :) I played through the first loop myself a few weeks back and was already getting irritated by some of the patterns - it totally looks like you can weave between the gaps without any problem, but your hitbox is quite a bit bigger than you would expect. I don't want to think about beating two loops of this...

Just cleared Sapphire, as such I'm done with the PCE CD shooter library and with 16-bit shooters in general (unless I decide to snag myself a Mega CD one of these days; a 32X is out of the question, so is the TurboGrafx-16 for those two respective shooters on each system). Dramatic-melancholic music seems to be appropriate! Image

This was definitely the most interesting selection of shooters out of all those systems – not even the best, just the most diverse. Just a few scintillating notes:

Ai Cho Aniki is a revelation of biblical proportions. When I was hearing this eunuch's choir (more delicate minds probably would've euphemized this with Gregorian chant or what have you, but we know this ain't true!) while shooting hybrids (partly bodybuilder, partly anchor) I finally realized what it is to have an epiphany. Perhaps the worst shooter of all regarding the game play, but it's so much more than that! Cho Aniki is a solid game, though.

Steam-Heart's is notably infamous for its hentai, of course, but it is also a bizzare game for other reasons. The programmers stole all kind of inspirations from a plethora of other games. The HUD is from Strike Gunner S.T.G, the dash maneuver from the Rayxanber games, there are bullet patterns straight out of V-V, lots and lots of copied enemy sprites from regular cannon fodder to the bosses (namely Soldier Blade and Nexzr, but also Image Fight II, Daioh and Acrobat Mission (!)), blatant imitations regarding level design and sound effects (Nexzr and Soldier Blade again) etc. It's a veritable rag rug of other people's ideas. It's also surprisingly brutal! Lots of really fast and dense bullet patterns, suicide bullets as early as stage 3, extremely nasty, partially unavoidable boss behaviours - the works. I'd say it is certainly among the hardest PCE CD shooters, not as tough as Legion or Rayxanber II, but not too far from them either.

Speaking of which, I'd say that Legion is the hardest shooter on the system. That final stage can die a fiery death for all I care. Metamor Jupiter (on Expert at least, I didn't play on Beginner) is also very tough since it's exhaustively long (about an hour) and the health bar can go from maximum to minimum in less than an instant. Lots and lots of cheap shots, too. It has some phenomenal soundtracks and atmospheric setpieces, however. Fans of Metal Black or Crying/Bio-Hazard Battle will definitely get a kick out of that one, I quite liked it despite the uneven design choices.

The PCE CD has the most shooters without any scoring whatsoever if I'm not mistaken (Legion, Metamor Jupiter and Psychic Storm) which is particularly sad in the case of Psychic Storm – if this game had a good scoring system and higher difficulty modes it could've been one of the best shooters on the system, it's way too easy as is.

I enjoyed Spriggan Mark 2 quite a bit more than I thought I would. It's insubstantial and shallow blasting at the end of the day, but the outstanding visual departments elevates the superficial material somewhat. I don't mind a second-rate Side Arms/Assault Suits Valken crossbreed.

While on the topic of subpar Side Arms: the so-called „Before Christ“ mode sucks hard! And I definitely prefer the HuCard version of the original game over this one (much more energetic soundtrack and no load times between stages). Same is true for a few other arcade ports (Daisenpuu > Daisenpuu Custom, R-Type > R-Type Complete CD) and especially true when comparing the MD ports of the Toaplan games with their PCE CD counterparts (with the exception of Hellfire S which is a fine game of its own, it doesn't loop and allows for some unique scoring challenges).

On the other hand, Cotton, Forgotten Worlds, Gradius II and Super Raiden are all very excellent, and I also like both Super Darius I & II a lot. I certainly prefer the PCE Cotton over Cotton Original on the PS1, that's for sure!

Download 2 is a very disappointing sequel to an overlooked game in my opinion. You get to kill Mecha/Brain Hitler at the end, however, Top Secret-style.

Macross 2036's Forgotten Worlds boss fights feel a bit clunky, but they're good fun regardless. Overall definitely not as great of a game than the SFC Macross, but a decent game nonetheless.

I prefer Winds of Thunder over Gate of Thunder without the speck of a doubt. Gate of Thunder drags quite a bit, whereas Winds of Thunder has a very unique style to it, even though it has some euroshmuppy design choices. In a similar vein I enjoyed Sylphia for its Greek mythology and the end-of-game bonuses in defiance of its pathetically easy difficulty.

I was very pleased to find out that there is not a single outright terrible game on the PCE CD (Ai Cho Aniki notwithstanding, see above), although Legion comes dangerously close (but can you really hate on a game with heroically cheesy dialogue like this?). That's one thing I noticed during my HuCard marathon as well: bad PCE shooters usually tend to have at least something quirky about them that makes it tolerable to sit through the game (Barunba for example) or they are so easy that it doesn't matter anyway (Deep Blue, Saint Dragon or Toilet Kids). You don't get depressing stinkers like Dimension Force, The Earth Defend (not to be confused with the decent Super E.D.F./Earth Defense Force!), Strike Gunner S.T.G or Xenon 2 Megablast. I like to play unusual games from time to time even if the execution isn't all that great (e.g. Uchuu Senkan Gomora/Bio-Ship Paladin and especially Tekkaman Blade), and the PCE decidedly delivers odd games! It was a blast to play through all those 16-bit games, now it's time to tackle something else.

Here's my 2-ALL of Axelay, starting on hard mode: Video

What an awesome game, can't believe I missed out on it all these years. The final stage is one of the best levels I've ever experienced in a shump. It's probably a bit too easy (especially if you start on normal), and the scoring system is broken, but this game definitely deserves its reputation as being on of the best on the SNES.

Spoiler: There isn't much story to this game but it appears that the pliot's family was killed by the aliens (it's unclear if the hero is a child or adult in the opening scene). The hero final comes back to exact revenge and annihilate the entire enemy fleet in the final stage. The music, level design, and build up to the final boss is superb, something that is rarely done with this level of finesse.

First off, congratulations to everybody! A lot of really incredible achievements here!

As for me:

Mushihimesama Futari Black Label 1cc, Original Mode. Like my DFK 1-ALL, a lot of credit goes to you guys in the strategy section and for Hydeux for his 1-sissy series.

The run itself went about as good as I could hope for. Started off with only 1 death through 4 stages. Entered stage 5 with two lives and almost entered Larsa with four except I screwed up a u-stream and rammed a bullet late in the stage. Still by entering her 3/3 I was confident I had victory in hand; sure enough I finished her off with a life to spare.

This marks not only my 2nd ever arcade 1cc/1-ALL ever, but it's the first time I've beaten any game in one credit using a stick. More specifically it's a MadCatz Street Fighter SE that had every major part except for 1 button replaced (Seimitsu LS-52 stick and 7 Sanwa buttons). It's ugly but it works and I got the main case for only $20 at the local comic store, so in the end it was a pretty decent investment since I've never really played with a stick before and was hesitant to spend a ton of money on a good universal fightstick only to end up hating it.

Raiden IV 1-All game overing on 2-1 boss(was playing the Arcade mode, so only 5 stages). I did the run on PS3 World Ranking mode, though I either forgot to upload it or it's just being slow to update(since when I quit playing for the night, it was still showing my 1-5 run). Hopefully it's on the leaderboard tomorrow morning when I check. If not, I should still have the high score that I can post.

No missed to the stage 4 boss and then fucked up my speedkill strat for it, so I died, then used multiple bombs(it's supposed to be 1 bomb). Then died early on stage 5 a bit. Got to the 1-5 boss with 2 bombs and no spare lives and used both bombs on the first phase. Expected to get hit by something on phase 2, but somehow managed to pull it off. I definitely still have a lot of work to get to the loop with more resources.

That's definitely a goal I wouldn't mind shooting for later. In the meantime I made a resolution back in January to have at least 3 arcade 1cc (or 2+1 Touhou Hard) by the end of the year, so I'll probably move onto a different game to finish that. I'm leaning towards Espgaluda over Deathsmiles, simply because I like the former more even if the latter's easier. Once that's done though I have no issues returning to Futari BL Original (or maybe even Maniac, who knows).

Also very nice job Chaos. I always envy people who can handle games like Raiden.

I just cleared Imperium (SNES) on hard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwnJswmtdQA

It's not the most amazing game I've ever played, but still surprisingly decent, with an innovative experience/upgrade system. It's also quite hard for a SNES shmup, especially with the super long levels that never seem to end and cheesy bosses.

Finally I've 1CCed the original R-Type arcade version

the first five stages just fair and playable to play, but the last three stages was too difficult and wants to test the player memorization ( especially stage 6 and 7 ). The last stage requires the player reflexes and almost impossible to beat the final boss just using 2 speedups and no power-ups, also if you died in that 3 stages the only solution is restart and play the game again, uuuggghhhh........ :x

Hey, it's been a while! Yeah, as of last night, I got my 1st Lunatic 1cc of Subterranean Animism, & I got it w/ Marisa Kirisame/Patchouli Knowledge, just like I always wanted to do my 1st SA Lunatic 1cc with! :)

My 1st Lunatic 1cc of SA!

This took a bit longer than expected, due to other stuff, but at any rate, I finally got to get this one down for the 1st time! This makes SA the 7th Touhou game I've 1cc'ed on Lunatic mode! ^^

Thanks, man! Yeah, I feel the same way about SA Lunatic, or SA in-general. For quite some time until recently, I've always found that game to be a scary one to work on. Happy to have gotten over that, though, and it was totally worth it, for sure (I do, after-all, have to 1cc all of the Touhou STG games on Lunatic at least once so I can start to get down to my bigger plans)! I had a lot of fun working on getting my 1st Lunatic 1cc of SA! :)

For the Touhou STG/shmup games on Lunatic (In terms of getting a 1st Lunatic 1cc), I got UFO, TD, DDC, MS, LLS, PoDD, and SoEW left to do. Soon enough, LoLK will be added to the list of 1st Lunatic 1cc's I'll want to get for sure when the full version comes out.

I'm planning on working on UFO Lunatic pretty soon, when I go get a couple other games down first, but yeah, UFO Lunatic's definitely the next Touhou game I'll be working on next.
