They made Metal Gear Rising.

MGR was a canned project of KojiPro resurrected by Platinum.

Konami and Kojima parted their ways recently, so unless there's something other than MGR, Platinum have no ties with Konami.

Konami is going through a mid life crisis at the moment. I too would love to see it , but it seems like the're moving more and more away from games. According to a lot of media outlets it seems they will be focusing more on their health spas and casinos in Japan. Besides Gradius, not 1 new Contra or Castlevania or anything!! I think their best day are behind them . Sorry for the rant , but they've become like the new Sega Capcom , Sqaure Enix etc.

True. I'm betting after Metal Gear V gets released Konami is done.

Imagine Japan filled with just developers, no publishers for their VGs. Highly doubt it would happen but the window of opportunity is ever so increasing.

Konami is just a sad, pathetic shell of it's former self. All they seem to care about is making more and more terrible Metal Gear Solid games until they go out of business.

Gradius V is one of my favorite games, and I came to terms a long time ago that we would never see Gradius VI. Konami is just done.

I remember a while ago in a Q/A stream for WayForward's Shantae KickStarter I asked them if Konami gave them OK, would they be open to do a Gradius. They said they'd be all over it and personally I think if no one else got the job, WF would be a swell choice (basing my opinion from Contra 4, I loved that game).

Speaking of KS, I can only hope that like Bloodstained, Yooka-Laylee, Formula Fusion, and MN9, a KS for a Gradius spiritual successor appears. I'd fund that instantly.

Gradius V is great & it would be perfect without those stupid cut scenes. Gradius Gaiden & Gradius Galaxies are also quite good but being honest with myself, it stops there.

This thread inspired me to fire up the legendary III today, both in MAME & later using the PS2 III & IV collection disc. It's kind of crap when it comes to gameplay & feels very shoddy even by 1989 standards. I feel this way about the majority of the series.

I think my love for Gradius always came from the art direction & novel power up system. The music has never been special to me, in fact some themes are dorky & lame.

You die once & that's it. All your power ups are gone & you'll quickly be inundated with a ridiculous amount of enemies & projectiles - all within the claustrophobic confines of it's unforgiving level design.

& the shields! The shields in Gradius couldn't be more useless. Why even give you the option for the gear shaped ones when the background will usurp them in moments as you collect power ups or try to get close enough to blast an enemy spawning dome?

I guess my point is that it's an overrated series to begin with.

I'm not going to feel bad about Konami. They gave us some great stuff but in the end you have to be realistic & look at the facts for what they are. They outsourced Silent Hill to death, outsourced Castlevania to mediocrity, spammed Metal Gear for all it was worth, & ignored Contra as if it was merely an ancient relic with no place in the modern world. It's a one sided relationship between Konami & it's fans and I think it's time to break up.

I grew up playing all the Gradius games in the arcades as they came out and it's my favourite shmup series/franchise ever.

Having said that, I'm quite happy enough with the games as they exist today. I don't need any more sequels. There's already plenty there to enjoy.

Having said all that... If G.Rev, Treasure, M2 or Moss got the rights to develop just one more game in the series ... I really wouldn't complain. :)

What the Gradius franchise lacks is a prominent director that represents the series and thus could revive it indirectly and independently by creating new games in it's vein (true also for Contra and the classical Castlevanias). While MightyNo9 doesn't look too convincing and it still has to be seen what will come out of the Bloodstained KS, that's still a much better basis than the aforementioned series have, sadly.

I just dont see it as a money making venture for them hence the reason they have been abstaining from doing so.

Kojima Vs Konami Super Bunnyhop.
Looks like Konami think the future's money is in gambling machines and mobile games. The Neo Contra fruit machine is particularly depressing :(

Actually, Nobuya Nakazato is to Contra what IGA is to Castlevania. He hasn't been active lately, but as far as we know he's still with Konami - probably toiling in the smartphone dungeons, like Koji was before he left.

Let's hope he'll take inspiration from IGA and Inafune then.

Gradius V is the perfect send-off.

Given today's creative climate and lack of developer talent/understanding of the genre, I can't imagine that a "Gradius 6" could be anything but insulting to the series and it's fans.

They could just give it to Treasure again.

Not like they have to give it to Mercury Steam ZING

I agree with this as well. Contra 4 was great. Only problem is that one of the main level designers behind that game is now working at Yacht Club instead of WF. Not sure if he was the sole reason behind that games excellence, but IMO you can definitely see the same sense of level design fundamentals and appreciation for nuance in Shovel Knight.

Nobody here ever has anything good to say about a reboot when they happen, so why do you keep hoping for it?

You know what, Konami was always dead to me, right from the start. Their fans have always been ignorant. They kill their own franchises in other franchises like how Gradius was used by a villain and was easily disposed of in Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Konami is now a mobile developer. Because trying to play a video game with no buttons is the way of the future.

They'll keep releasing Winning Eleven, Pro Yakyuu Spirits and Jikkyou Powerful Pro on consoles and dedicated handhelds for at least several more years, but it was already obvious that they were pulling out of non-mobile games for good otherwise once relations broke down with KojiPro. Everyone should have done their mourning by now.

Expecting that Metal Gear Online will be shuttered even faster than MGS3's iteration was. Sony/Microsoft/Valve will probably have to step in to keep it running. I doubt we'll see all of the DLC they had planned, either.

I bet most of us saw this coming from a mile away. Personally for me , aside from MGS ( which is my favorite series) there hasn't been anything of interest in years. The Konami I grew up with in the 80s was off the hook. Contra , double dribble, tmnt, Castlevania and so on. That Konami has been gone for a long time .So them getting out of console does not effect me one bit. As I said , in my book they were already gone.

There was actually an entire series of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards based on Gradius ships and options (along with some of the paper airplane guys from Parodius): http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Konami_Arcade_Games

A villain used a Vic Viper card along with an Option card in one of the animes, but I can't find a clip.

The rest of his statement still makes no sense however.
