I have to admit I'm not a Final Fantasy Fan at all but that video looked pretty impressive (graphic wise)
It actually did look like an actual game for a while.
I laughed like an idiot when the one move just sent her in the sky with the clock still running for ages.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I don't get the beef with fighters on 3DS. It's not exactly flooded with them and it's more than capable of producing a good fighting game. I am skeptical of that DBZ game, though.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I don't really have an issue with it as long as there is download play and the game is made right for the system. Controls shouldn't be too difficult to pull moves off.BrianC wrote:I don't get the beef with fighters on 3DS. I really loved those Bleach fighting games back on the DS... they were great fun and worked really well on the DS.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Fighting games aren't suitable for platforms where you can't use your own controllers and can't play local versus with a single system. Period.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I disagree, as long as the system is equipped with a good d-pad. Vs with multiple systems has some advantages and it's not like recent handhelds lack online. Anyway, consoles already get some nice fighting games, so I don't see any harm with handhelds getting some of their own.Pretas wrote:Fighting games aren't suitable for platforms where you can't use your own controllers and can't play local versus with a single system. Re: The Fighting Games news thread
There's no harm to it and they can be fun for what they are, but they will never be able to rise to the level of their arcade counterparts, at least community-wise. So it can be unfortunate to see a good idea squandered on a portable system. An arcade oriented 2D DBZ fighting game could be pretty amazing.

We had several of those in the past.ACSeraph wrote:There's no harm to it and they can be fun for what they are, but they will never be able to rise to the level of their arcade counterparts, at least community-wise. One that comes to mind is Super Dragon Ball Z
Cell Shaded but plays 2.5D
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
The problem is that many portable fighting games have counterparts and neglect to focus on single player. I like SSB and DoA Dimensions quite a bit, but the former has mostly superior modes on Wii U (though I prefer Smash Run to the board game mode) and the latter has terrible AI.

I have yet to pay it. Is it any good? I've hears it's Arika's worst game.Shelcoof wrote:Super Dragon Ball Z

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
It was ported to the ps2 and suppose to be regarded as the deepest DBZ fighter.KAI wrote:I have yet to pay it. Is it any good? I've hears it's Arika's worst game.Shelcoof wrote:Super Dragon Ball Z
I think the old street fighter 2 producer worked in it
Look up old footage tournament footage of the game
It's also known as chou dragon Ball z
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Noritaka Funamizu indeed had a major role in Super DBZ's design. It's definitely the best Dragonball fighter if you care more about mechanics than fanservice and roster size (which the majority of players of these games seemingly don't), but it's still nothing too special.
I wish Arika had patched things up with Capcom, so some SFEX characters could have found their way into SFIV/SFxT. Skullomania would have been pretty much a given, considering his Western fan following.
BTW, Capcom's last non-sequel fighting game was Kenichi: Gekitou! Ragnarok Hachikengou for PS2, based off the shonen martial arts anime. It's similar to Rival Schools, but it's unfortunately even further simplified from that. I was somewhat surprised that they never did a "Rival Schools Complete" release for PS2 similar to the SF Alpha and Darkstalkers port collections. The series has remained fairly popular with the Japanese arcade tourney scene many years later.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Fate/Unlimited Codes came out after that (they both were produced by Capcom and 8ing)
FUC is so fucking awesome even if it's broken as hell. I've been playing it a lot with my friends lately. Nice graphics, good combo system, Namiki & co doing the music, this game is nearly perfect.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I didn't know Eighting was behind Kenichi. Their name doesn't appear anywhere on the packaging or in the game's opening, while they're prominently credited in Unlimited Codes along with Cavia.
It's true that Capcom's internal staff would have been wrapped up in SFIV's development (along with Dimps) by that point, though.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Yeah agreed, broken or not this game is awesome. Perfect game for Fate fans, I'd kill to see a modern one with the Zero and UBW characters. Too bad the west only got the mediocre simplified PSP version.KAI wrote:Fate/Unlimited Codes came out after that (they both were produced by Capcom and 8ing)

ayy hopefully it won't be an euroshmup this time
Also since Akiyama Uni and ZUN were the only ones with listenable songs in the bunch I'd be happy if they never let randoms work on the official games again.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
So Microsoft started a promotion a few days ago for Killer Instinct, where all of the money they received through digital sales would go towards tournament payouts. That was supposed to run for two weeks, but they hit their $100,000 cap in just three days. I guess KI is more popular than I thought.
I wonder how games like DOA5 and Tekken have done with their F2P experiments. I think that both the fighting game developers and community could really benefit from that model as long as it's done right (ie. more like Dota than LoL).

A 1.11 patch was released for Koihime Enbu last month.

I hope that the game gets ported. It looks pretty fun.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I finally published my article on the current state of the genre.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Great post! I went to a game night the other day and was taught the basics of GGXrd, and it felt right in a way that many 2D fighters don't to me. Now I somewhat understand, and have a better appreciation. Your point about 3D fighters is pretty true as well, though I'm unsure what could be done. To be totally true, I'm not sure if I dislike that VF is all close-range for the most part. But I am definitely curious and interested to see if something could be done to change my mind.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
I don't think VF can do much more within its aesthetic limitations. Ditto for Tekken, though it can at least attempt to do some hitbox tweaking to make the mid-range game a bit more fleshed out.
The mech fighters have it easy in this regard; the green lock/red lock icon in Gundam is basically the game's way of telling you when you're in or out of range to play footsies, which is pretty ingenious if you think about it. A 2D fighter could do the same thing by giving you an indicator onscreen, but it wouldn't be as aesthetically consistent and would partially spoil the of the appeal of the genre.
It really is a shame about Soul Calibur. That series has had the potential from the beginning to solve this issue, but Namco has been insistent on keeping it under Tekken's thumb and it's become a joke since IV.

Great article squash. I would love to hear more about mech fighters from you (most of the people I know just simply don't get that genre).

A few years too late for my liking, but still great news! I sure hope they implement rollback based netcode.
