I played the Amiga version once, back when Factor 5 (it's developer) was giving it away as a free download on their web page. It was a very nice version. The collision detection was on target and the audio was great, but the games graphics just didn't seem to have as much detail as the PSX version. Probably because the Amiga runs games at 320x200.
As said somewhere else, the psx version solved this by adding vertical scrolling/transparent score display. It is no suprise to anyone if I say that the original PCB is the best version, Mame is on par with the psx version (yeah I consider mame 'a version' though it runs the same code because it feels so different when you play it)
psx version is good but too hard ( I got the japanese one );
amiga version is very playable but lacks too much stuff;
c64 version has the best music on all of these,
PC engine version is great but it's split onto two.
gameboy versions are.. ehh..
for the sequels; I like delta and final the best. Final has flaws but so much good stuff in it that I can forgive the flaws.
I never liked Rtype III much, when I saw the rotating walls section, it just felt so cheap that I didn't want to play it again. I liked it more when I tried it with emulation, but..well..I got to give it another go. I just feel that I cannot totally trash a game that many people love so much..
