I don't know how popular a sentiment this is, but Star Ocean has got to be one of the most consistently mediocre role-playing series that I've ever had the displeasure of playing, with C-tier story, characters and writing. And judging by the first screens shown, I think it's safe to say that SO5 will follow in the footsteps of its forebearers. Those character designs are just... ughh!

Glad they stick with the tradition of ridiculous protagonist names. Fidel Camus? Sounds like a 70s prog rock band name.

Looks like 4-2... :?

EDIT: ok let's give Tri-Ace a chance, maybe they'll make an interesting game this time ? Who knows.

Star Ocean 4 had one of the most unbearably awful stories and cast of characters I've ever seen in a game. I thought the combat system was decent enough, but everything else was 2/10 trash at best.

But on the other hand, Resonance of Fate was borderline great. I guess this could go either way, depending on the staff.

To be more precise I'd be okay with a new one if they could go back to the roots of the franchise, with all the weirdness and freshness it had.

SO2 is probably the RPG I played the most in my life, despite the flaws it was still full of originality and awesome stuff, especially back in 1999.

But by the pictures it looks like they will try to do a 'better SO4', which would be a bad idea...

SO2 is the game that got me on internet message boards (I wanted help completing my voice collection!), and I put over a hundred hours into it and SO3. SO4 was a fiasco, and I can't see myself giving SO5 an honest shot.

Maybe I'll play Blue Sphere instead?

I'm okay with it existing. It's at least no Breath of Fire.

And Breath of Fire is at least no All The Bravest.

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

Regarding what makes Star Ocean 5 a Star Ocean game: “The Star Ocean games are a series that I feel should be about enabling the players to enjoy what’s going on comfortably. Over the years, the games have always had action game elements in their combat systems, but they’re otherwise definitely not action games in the truest sense. For Star Ocean 5 as well, we’re making a game that’s not so dependent purely on player skill to be enjoyed so that our audience can focus on taking on the world and characters that we’ve created here.”

Wait, battles were about the only decent thing in SO4.
And soooo now... some paid dumbass got a brilliant idea: make SO5 battle system boring !?

I like all the outfits quite a bit (though the witch's mostly because it's just beyond retarded), but pink-hair girl has some serious issues with eye placement

SO4's characters looked like perfect porcelain dolls, so maybe this time they're trying to fuck up proportions on purpose ?

Tri-Ace were never good at recreating manga-like figures in 3D models, dunno why.

Tri-Ace have a habit of frustrating the hell out of me.

They'll have good gameplay, then everything else sucks.

So, I'm not going to "wait and see". If I hear something good about it, I'll take a look.
