Peculiarities of Wii controls

Post by Obiwanshinobi »

I'd like to know how those of you who actually played them on Wii liked the Wii controls in Samba de Amigo and Sega Bass Fishing.

Then there's Resident Evil 4 - I for one don't like that B needs to be pressed as I take aim (S&P2's default settings share this flaw but can be configured otherwise); also, having to control weapons with scope using the stick is counter-enjoyable here (but I suspect the game's model lags behing remote aim which would be all too apparent if you controlled the camera this way). I have no other reservations, BUT I know for sure some players are shockingly awful at this game when using remote.
Reading this you'd think the writer hardly ever plays action games with a computer mouse. I have, however, seen a seasoned PC gamer sucking at RE4 Wii like you wouldn't believe.

I actually think the Wii version of RE4 is the definitive version, because that kind of light gun style aiming is most suitable for that kind of game. I would much rather use that kind of control than a right analog stick for aiming in most cases, if only because of accuracy of aiming. For some games it works well, because they give you enough time to work out the aim, but for multiplayer online games, if you're not quick on the draw with that right analog stick, you're toast.

But I truly feel like the Wiimote aiming in RE4 is top notch, and it felt very natural when I was playing.

Pop'n Music (Wii) has you moving your hands over a set of invisible "buttons" floating in the air, presumably because Konami didn't want to pony up the cash to manufacture a new line of proper Pop'n controllers. It's pretty bad.

It was a missed opportunity that the PS3 HD remaster of RE4 didn't support PS Move controls, especially after they had already been patched into RE5.

As for Sega Bass Wii, nothing will ever top the Dreamcast Fishing Controller.

It's not really light gun style, though (with a peripheral it would be, yet I wouldn't have much use for it in RE4 of all games).

I'm sure in games like Unreal Tournament or Quake, wiimote & nunchuk would do a better job than twin stick controllers. Shame that Wii didn't get any that I know of (pretty much all proper twitch shooters on it are on rails and in games I've played where you control aim and camera at the same time - Red Steel 2, Battallion Wars 2 and Metroid Prime - the aim lags too much to scratch this itch of mine).

I need to play the homebrew Quake port on of these days. There's also a (Japanese, I think) TPP shooter on VC (aliens exploitation) that looked just like what doctor ordered, but I can't remember its name now.
