Jamestown+ PS4 Release

Post by westquote »

Hi Everybody!

I just wanted to let you all know we finally settled on a release date, and Jamestown+ comes out for PS4 tomorrow, March 17, in the US (March 18 in EU)!

The '+' adds 2 new levels, 3 new ships with customizable specials and shot types, and a bunch of subtle gameplay tweaks (almost all motivated by threads on this forum). We also reworked the entire UI and progression to accommodate the new content and platform. Oh, and 5.1 surround sound remastered soundtrack, because why not? :)

Anyway, we're really pleased with how it turned out, and want to thank everybody for their feedback on the original game. Looking forward to hearing any thoughts people have this go-around. :)

Thanks!

*P.S. When I last posted, I asked what PS4 arcade controller people recommend picking up for shmups, and the response was basically "what shmups?". I'm finally going to buy a PS4 arcade stick (as a gift to myself for shipping the game)! Anything people can recommend that's compatible with PS4?

Oh, also, my brother (and co-founder) wrote a blog post about the game that has pictures and video: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/03/ ... -tomorrow/

The huge GIF takes a while to load, but does a good job of showing off the gameplay once it does.

I have one of the Hori HRAP Hayabusas for PS4/PS3 and I'm pretty happy with it, but the parts are Sanwa-like so they may not be to everyone's preference for shooting games.

And congrats on the release!

There are no small print runs for console games, until someone finds the key to the console's copy protection so that self-printing becomes possible (see Dreamcast GD-ROM), AND the console maker doesn't feel it's worth it to hunt down whoever found it.

right, physical copies just feel so much better, didn't hurt to ask right?
will definitely try this out once I have enough reason to get a ps4, at the moment there isn't much reason lol, as im not a big racing or fps gamer

Sony clearly makes exceptions sometimes, because Under Defeat HD (PS3) had a miniscule print run in the US. Copies were only sold online through Amazon - it didn't even reach Gamestop like all other niche physical releases on current consoles here.

Depending on your standards, NG:DEV Team's releases may also qualify.

It's slightly more likely, now that MS has dropped the parity clause for Xbone "indie" releases.

Anybody know if this will eventually be released for PS3? If so, what is the timeframe? I noticed for Resogun and Crimsonland, the delay was about 6 months..
Not enough shmups for me to justify purchasing a PS4.

anyone play the new stages yet and can give some details on how they flow/feel? are they terrain heavy like the final stage, or more open? lots of zako, or big enemies?

I've played the new stages...! :D

No terrain in either, and it's a pretty even mix of gameplay feel on each level - plenty of zako, but also more big enemies than most of other levels in the game. Both levels have a at least one 'miniboss' section, similar to what you face in the first half of Dark Sector in the original game.

Phobos has faster average bullet speed than the rest of the levels by ~20%, and has certain enemies that can be detonated mid-air for special kill bonus points. The second half of Phobos is all about moths hatching from cocoons and swarms of bugs pouring out of holes and leaping up at you (like ohmu in Nausicaa). Requires fairly consistent DPS and anticipation.

Deimos has fast seekers, ambushes, and a fair bit of texture/complexity to the enemy behaviors (sword-throwers, grenade-throwers that hide behind cover, etc). Deimos is significantly more fun on Judgement difficulty, and I personally think the Pirate Queen boss is the most fun in the game (on Judgement). (Also, if you let all the golden king crabs survive until the end, there's a large hidden scoring opportunity.)

Would love to hear how others would characterize them.

Been out of the loop on shmups for quite a bit. I missed out on the steam version and just finally started playing this and I love it! Great title to get back into gaming with.

Picked up a ps4 primarily for Bloodborne, but have been enjoying some of the indie titles during the wait. Just snagged Jamestown today and am having a great time with it. Fantastic job with a lot of sections that remind me (in the best possible way) of some of my favorite shmups, while also feeling quite original. The customization is great too!

Picked this up this week and I've been enjoying it, pretty good overall. I think the ships could do with being a bit faster though, feels like it was balanced for co-op and multiple ships. First Phobos level boss is awesome.

With this and Astebreed (on JP PSN as of a few days ago) it's been a good week for indie titles on PS4.

I was assuming this was something addressed by being able to unlock further ships. I've only played with the initial ship, which is pretty slow.

Haven't played much yet, but it's pretty enjoyable. The PS4's dpad works fine. I don't think I'd buy a similar shmup on Xbox One until I had something other than the standard controller, which has a pretty awkward placement for the dpad.
