R-Type II and Super R-Type

Post by Despatche »

ImageImage

Space was ripped by hatred and desire to counterattack and take revenge.

Previous thread: 1
--------------------
R-Type II: 3 lives, Normal difficulty. Apparently the World version is easier, arggghhh. Not sure which version R-Types is based on. Please mention if you used Japan or Japan rev.C.

In the old thread, there was talk of other versions starting at an "Easy" difficulty and lacking a "Hardest" setting; none of the versions currently in MAME seem to do this (or have done so before, at least as far back as 0.99), so I don't know.

Super R-Type: Don't use Kids (Novice), I guess? Only thing I can think of, other than no level or weapon selects etc.
--------------------
Please post scores in this format:

Code: Select all

GAME [- DIFFICULTY]
NAME - SCORE - AREA - AUTOFIRE YES/NO - PLATFORM/VERSION
Please indicate which emulator build/program version or which release/console you may have used. For R-Type II, stages 7~12 are the loop.

R-TYPE 2

Good sequel, I don't understand its bad rep everywhere.
Granted, the 2nd loop is much more brutal than in the first R-Type....

Looks like Kollision got lucky with the stage he perished at. Died two stages farther yet my score is lower. Ah, the injustice. :mrgreen:

Here's my Super R-Type score after FINALLY getting the 2-ALL on hard, and ridding myself of this nightmare of a game.

Hard -> Pro
pegboy - 785,900 - ALL - US SNES+US Cart

Super R-Type 2-ALL No Miss on Hard & Pro

Finally, a Hard->Pro score.

Is there anything after Pro, by the way? From what I heard, the second loop of Pro is just Pro again.

Do you know of a way to start the game on Pro mode? The only way I've ever played Pro mode is by clearing hard and playing loop 2.

I know you can't select it Pro from the options, even after beating the game on pro it still won't let you select it. Apparently there is a level select code (read about it on Gamefaqs) but I've never used it, maybe that will let you? Even though I swore to myself I'd never play this game again I might go fire it up and test out the level select feature.

Oh, I'm dumb. That's right, Pro is the secret difficulty after Hard. That's what happens when you attempt to remember something from four years ago.

I feel your frustration, pegboy! My sincerest congratulations for getting the 2-ALL on Hard -> Pro, I cursed enough as it is. The game is mildly fun on Normal, but all those problems start to kick in on higher difficulties. I still can't get over the atrocious hit detection and those infuriating situations where a sudden acceleration of the screen suddenly kills you (like when some of the junk drops on you in the sixth stage even though your bit should've killed it). Looks a lot easier than it actually is. Can't wait to 2-ALL the good R-Types.

Nice job! It really is a nightmare of a game, one that I would probably never touch again lol. The hit detection is all over the place with the bosses and bullets, especially the fucking "junk yard" boss on stage 6 and his lasers. You think you are in the clear, but no...die and go back to the start of the stage!

I think with a few small tweaks this game could have been so much better, oh well. I liked R-Type III a lot more, but even that game has it's problems. I'm hopeful to get into R-Type Delta and Final at some point, but I'm just kind of lost right now.

Also Perikles do you get the full ending credits when you beat in on normal/hard? I know you get credits when you clear hard/pro but I was wondering if you get the same ending or not?

They cut out the part after your ship lands in the hangar, you only get to see how it navigates to the space station. After the credits it shows all the same logos and finally it says "Let's try Hard level". You miss out on something like seven seconds worth of ending in other words. :lol:

I can highly recommend the PS1 R-Types, pegboy, which contains amazing ports of the first two arcade games. I'm going to play both in MAME in the future so that I can easily record the runs, but other than that there's no reason not to purchase this great compilation. I'm not sure which set of R-Type II is included in the US R-Types, though. I know for a fact that R-Type II on the Japanese R-Types is just like the Japanese arcade games with all the tricky set-ups, but I don't know whether they changed that in the Western releases or not. I'm also sure you're going to love R-Type Delta, that's a fabulous game, too. You'll get the Strikers 1945 II 2-ALL soon, I'm sure of that. :)

Anyone else feel like the Super Normal->Hard board is a bit redundant? I don't want to throw out multiple scores like that, though.
