PC or MAME

Post by Gra33yKno11 »

Hello all, I am kinda new here so did not do alot of searching......yet. I miss playing these games quite a bit and would like some advice or a few game suggestions. I have enjoyed shmups since River Raid and most recently Jamestown. May I have a few suggestions on Shumps with RPG elements, XP, levels, etc. I have been doing some research on MAME and other emulators however would prefer PC. Thanks in advance and glad I found this place. :D

You are very uninformed and confused. MAME is a PC program.

Radiant Silvergun has rpg elements. I recommend emulating it on Saturn instead of Mame however.

Gradius and Darius's power ups aren't really rpg elements, but they were designed somewhat to feel like it (see bottom in this interview for Gradius).

Get the downloadable X360 version. Don't expect it to play anything like an RPG, though.

Just to let you know most good shmups don't have RPG elements(Atleast in my opinion). If you want to play on PC check out the shmups on GOG or Steam. Also get shmupmame, specially built for shmups. Do you like both vertical and horizontal shmups?

There's quite a few PC-exclusive Doujins that are well-worth looking into, also.

Mars Matrix technically has RPG elements (experience point will power up your ship in addition to acting as a multiplier)

Also, it's a great place for beginners to start

Tyrian and Tyrian 2000 have a number of RPG elements, such as tons of story (probably the most story in any shmup ever), a full weapons shop where you can purchase upgrades to your ship (or even a new ship), and then various other weapons, armor, shielding, etc. There are plenty of shmups that have a shop feature, everything from Fantasy Zone to Lords of Thunder and beyond, but to my knowledge, Tyrian has the most option-heavy shop experience ever. That, and the fact that there are some places with branching paths where you can skip over some levels, and that your ship has a lifebar that can be regenerated through energy tanks, and sometimes, through special item pickups that can regenerate armor, shielding, and health. It has the most fully realized RPG elements of any shmup I know, with out taking a turn into true RPG territory, ala Sigma Star Saga.

Doesn't Wolf Fang allow you to customise your mech significantly before you go to battle?

Yes, and so do Last Legion UX (to a mild degree) and Armored Core.
