News from Kevtris:

Well the audio update video has been posted showing off all of the expansion audio capabilities, along with cropping.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNBVzGaworw

Enjoy! (yeah the sunsoft 5B was a lot quieter than it should'a been. that's why there is a gain control!)

Going to work on palettes next and flesh out the rest of the menu next.

Kevtris and I check out the Hi-Def NES on my 19" lcd tv.
We also test the zapper out and talk about what's going on with the project.

Your link to Kevtris' recent update doesn't work.

I've got an extra Sharp Twin Famicom incoming which I'd like to upgrade to HDMI. The batch of 250 firsts will this be your own consoles only or can we ourselves provide you with consoles?
I have special request for mine other than HDMI.

Release is up to Kevin, but he is closing in fast.
Not sure how we are going to handle the first batch, but I don't think i'll do more than 20-30 consoles on my own before letting ppl send in consoles and start selling DIY kits, that's if we don't need to change anything etc.

Latest update vid from Kevin:

Update #5 has been posted. The brightness on the HDMI output is a bit blown out but this is because of the capture card. I didn't spot it until it was rendered and posted. bleh. Every time I capture something it seems to screw it up in a different way.

Anyways, I show a couple games (Duck Maze, Orb 3D, and Micromachines) which apparently gave the nesRGB fits. Also, the flowing palette demo apparently doesn't work either. All four of these are shown.

Update #6 is now posted.

Looks like I'm about done on the software side. The things left:

* copynes
* updating via cart
* audio register viewer
* PCB redesign to fit in the toploader under the main PCB

I've been watching your channel RE: this. Very excited for it. Can't wait for kits to be available...if they will be available for DIYers.

I'll be shocked if DIY kits will be made available in 2015.

Here's update #7 from Kevtris:
This time I totally redo the board layout, and I took a time lapse video of me doing this. You can watch the board "grow" from nothing to completion!

CopyNES USB was added, a 5V buck regulator on-board, and a form-factor re-do so it will properly fit the toploader.

New vid from Kevtris:

Update #8 is now posted. This time I show how I place the parts and reflow solder it in a modified toaster oven.

After a few more minor additions, I think it will be ready for the world.

I've known about this for a while from hanging out on #nesdev. It's very neat, however I don't think I'll buy.

three reasons:
1) Composite is good enough for me usually on the Nintendo
2) I don't have HDMI inputs on my PVM -_-
3) My famicom doesn't have space for the board without removing the eject mechanism.

If kevtris made a flash cart with proper VRC7 and MMC5 mapper support, I'd buy in an instant. But HDMI just isn't a priority to me.

I would totally buy this!!!
But does this make A/V outputs unusable? This was kinda answered already in page 2, but is there no way to switch or split?
I can't abandon the original grainy look of CRT compatibility.

I just thought of something. Wouldn’t it be nice if this thing had a 960p mode that could be put inside a 1080p frame, to get square pixels and perfect scanlines without sacrificing too much screen real-estate?

Actually do any of the XRGB's even do this? Seems like a pretty obvious feature that a lot of people would use.

It would be a logical solution. To simply scale it to fit integerly and leave the rest of the space empty in a 1080p buffer.

Though Square pixels would go against how games were designed to be displayed no? Since the NES uses non square pixels for it's output

For those that didn't see it here is the analogue NT running the hi-def kit scrolling through menu options:

So the analogue NT comes with the NESRGB and for an added fee, the NES HDMI. It still uses original NES CPU / PPU.

Why would anyone want this device?? What advantage does it have over a top loader with NESRGB or top loader with NES HDMI installed? I can only see 1 big flaw - much higher cost (starting cost of $500USD before HDMI, controllers, and hookups!)

2: Simplicity
3: Famicom and NES cart slot ready
4: Slew of output options
5: Four controller ports

Warranty.

Although -
1: I think it is 90 days from the delivery date & that is it.
2: The soldering and wiring inside looks very quickly "homemade."

I know one person that bought one, and he was getting some flack on Twitter for it. His response was more or less said he didn't want to buy someone's 30-year-old, used system that had been hacked up for RGB and/or HDMI. <shrug>

The irony is, of course, that the video output of it seems to come as an afterthought. It is still an expansion/hack-in vs a made into PCB-design option.

Warranty? Really!? Any modder worth their salt can give you that and more! 90 days for a 500$+ device is a joke.

I'm sure if a person contacts Jason 6 months after a system he did, he'll do what's right. I know I do that for my customers. If you want something new, with warranty, and is 0 hassle, might I suggest a Retron 5? Heck, for this price, you can buy 5+ retron 5 systems!

And the Retron 5 can play SNES, SFC and Genesis games! This system can not.

(personally, I think the retron 5 is nothing but a glorified PC emulator.. but this thing.. wow.. not sure if there's a market for it at all at this cost) I'm not sure what "value" this device brings to the retro gaming community. Nothing close to the same as what Jason (with his YouTube videos), Kevtris or Tim W. do anyways.

That's my $0.02 anyways.
