Some good Shmups from this last year.

Post by O. Van Bruce »

Well, I've been out of touch from shmups for the last year and I seriously dunno anything about what has happened. Reading from some posts seems like CAVE is definetly dead now (the old meme became true) and few other stuff. Anyway, a brief resume of what has happened over the last year would be apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Crimzon Clover's arcade version was ported to Steam. I'm not sure of what else.

The Crimzon Clover "World Ignition" port is also on GOG, if you'd prefer to go that route.

Caladrius got ported to the PS3 with some extra modes and tweaks, turned out quite nicely.

Milestone (or, some more recent incarnation of them) released a rather bare-bones and rough-edged compilation on the 360, not recommended.

Some bastardized outsourced port of Mushi Futari on smartphones, haven't played it myself, supposedly poor.

The full "Altynex" doujin shmup series is on Steam now, if you don't already have them from someplace else.

Revolver 360 Re:Actor was released in English a little ways back.

Some unreleased helicopter shooter from way back when was discovered and dumped unexpectedly, not sure if it's "officially" in MAME yet.

Progress on a bunch of projects in the Development section.

Others I'm forgetting...

If you're talking emulation then as mentioned

Hammer Away - the rare Sega prototype
Raiden 2 / DX - people have been waiting forever for this
Hacha Mecha Fighter - bootleg version dumped, so protection issues resolved
NMK004 games (including HMF) have correct sound (Mustang, Strahl, Bio Ship Paladin, Black Heart, Macross, GunNail, Thunder Dragon, Acrobat Mission, Vandyke)
Yukiwo - rare Taito prototype of Master of Weapon, significant differences
X2222 - some roms from the development of the game donated by the original programmers (sadly no sound, and debug builds with debug text on screen but all levels / prototype builds with only 5 levels and corrupt boss gfx)
Wyvern F0 - rare Taito game
Megaphoenix - rare classic style (non-scrolling) shooter developed in Spain
Air Assault - the very rare World release of Fire Barrel
A vertical version of the crappy 'Spectrum 2000'
The weird ultra-mini Alien Invaders 'Space Invaders' type game.
The ultra-lazy Mushihime-Sama Futari Black Label (2009/11/27 INTERNATIONAL BL)

So not a bad year really, I'm tempted to say it's the last time you'll see anywhere near this much work on SHMUPs in MAME.

If you're talking original releases, yeah, it's more limited, but that's not really surprising considering the genre is dying / moving to a new form on Smartphones that isn't really to the taste of the traditional audience.

these weren't mentioned:

Ge-sen Love plus pengo (360)
Atlantean (PC Engine)
Raiden IV Overkill (PSN)

EDIT: not that they were any "good" by the OPs request for info - I can only vouch for Overkill

Wasn't the never-before-seen Chimera Beast finally released this year? Or was that last year.
