The Arcade Golf Games Thread

Image

Is there anyone here that play arcade golf games?
I have an urge to play some, I don't know why, but why not!

What's your favourite?
Any game you recommend for beginners?
Are they pretty much the same or are there different styles, etc?

Among arcade golf games, i believe it's among the best. Made by Nazca before they were absorbed into SNK to make Metal Slug games.

Golden Tee is still my favourite, for the trackball control alone.

I ain't know shit about 'em but I find this topic most intriguing. Image The only non-racing, non-combat sports game currently in my library is the Real Squash Simulator Cosmic Smash. Unless Balloon Fight is considered a sport.

I need to play that more. I like arcade style golf games, but have only played a few in arcades. My impressions of this one game from Taito (I think it's from the 90s) weren't that great because I found the perspective confusing, though. The Mario Golf games are good stuff and I also like Fighting Golf, Golf, and NES Open/MarioOpen on NES, Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf, Pebble Beach, and PGA Tour Golf games on Genesis, Hot Shots Golf on PSX, and Super Pro Golf on the Intellivision.

How many Golden Tee games are there now? I once remember spending over 2 hours at a party at a bowling alley playing one of those. Was a fun 2 hours and probably the reason I like Golf video games!

Monkey Golf (one of the original Super Monkey Ball modes) is not a coin-op game, but since Monkey Ball orginated as one, Monkey Golf deserves a mention here.

I've heard about the Golden Tee LIVE cab-thing where you actually spend and earn real money, but that doesn't seem to exist outside of North America, right ?
http://livewire.itsgames.com/pages/gt/how-to-play
Now is it even fun / addictive outside of the cash thing ?

Neo Turf Masters/Big Tournament Golf should be owned by one and all.

Love neo turf masters and games in similar vein. Hate golden tee games and any trackball golf games, trackball feels way too inaccurate for me.

Oh there are many now...they seem to continue to make money off these games and releasing them yearly since 1995. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Tee_Golf

Neo Turf Masters/Big Tournament Golf is the only one worth playing for people who don't actually care about real golf.

The people I saw playing Golden Tee during its status as a minor cultural fad in the early 2000s seemed to always be slovenly middle-aged landwhales in ill-fitting clothes with a beer in one hand and the trackball in the other. I would imagine the cash prizes brought out much of the same crowd that frequents casinos.

Haha well the only time I do play golden tee games is at the bar so perhaps the beer has to do with my trackball inaccuracies :P

Yeah I've only seen Golden Tee's in bar locations. That game tends to do well with that crowd...just like Buck Hunter. ;)

I vaguely remember this Golf game I liked to play back in the day where the trackball launched the ball. I think Birdie may have been in the title.

Edit: Looked up games with "Birdie" on Klov. I'm pretty sure it was Birdie King or its sequel (or maybe even both). I vaguely remember the marquee. The third one has a different Marquee, so I'm sure it wasn't that one.

ON THE GWEEEEEEN! Neo-Turf Masters is my jam. Love arcade golf games! Played actual golf until I hit a guy in the head teeing off and became a recluse. Much more fun to actually have control and not go outside.

I wonder if it's possible to play a Golden Tee game on a supergun?

I do have Neo Turf Masters MVS sitting on the shelf already.

I played Major Title 2 strangely longer than required when testing it post-repair.

Major Title 2 - what a name for a game! Any story behind that name?

If we are drifting into console golf stuff I have a love/hate relationship with Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.

I also like The Irem Skins Game on SNES, which has an arcade version. Not sure of the differences, though.

Edit: Forgot that it's also the US name for the first Major Title. I'm not sure of the story behind the name, but it would be interesting to hear the story behind the western title, as well.

Odd, telling from KLOV, Irem Skins Game Arcade is also Major Title 2. The SNES version is definitely the first game.

Edit: Doh, I was mistaken. The JP version is just called Major Title, but the SNES/SFC version seems to be based more on Major Title 2.

Do mini golf games count?

Sente Mini Golf is pretty fun, though fairly obscure.

There was an SFC mini golf game that I can't remember the name of, but it reminded me of a mini golf game mixed with marble madness in terms of the wacky level design. It was also multiplayer and had a fun cut-throat mechanic.

I do too, great series, and this is coming from someone who plays the actual game. Most mainstream golf games just don't get it, although I still need to very much try NTM.

Kirby's Dream Course or the early version released on that BSX thing, Special Tee Shot?

Kind of cute to see people mention the Major Title series, and it's easy to see why it's liked: it's pretty much the direct precursor to Neo Turf Masters [remember that Nazca was made of ex-Irem staff], and loads of fun. Similar sort of play, although Neo Turf Masters is a bit more streamlined.

also, I fucking love Kirby Dream Course
first time I played it was at a hotel with a bunch of SNES games through some rental service though, haha
