I heard that Haya Oh can be accessed in the PS2 version of Space Harrier, but through a secret stage. I hear that you have to defeat the skull dragon Valda before he approaches a fourth time, but when you defeat him in the final stage, you have to wiggle Harrier around in the center of the screen while firing rapidly into the screen. I tried this, and it's not working.

So I recently bought this game: http://www.feathered-ether.com/stellavanity/
but i cannot seem to get it to run at a framerate better than 20-30fps. I know that the game is supposed to slow down sometimes but that it should usually go at 60fps judging from youtube videos.

Does anyone know of fixes for this I could try. Would sure be lovely.

Bonus Boss: In the PS2 remake, this is how Haya Oh is fought instead. If you keep shooting after defeating Valda, you will be transported to Stage 19 and play 4 more stages until Stage 22, where Haya Oh will appear.

I like when all the popcorn planes and tanks in Battle Garegga are destroyed into pieces, and instead of just a generic explosion animation you see all the destroyed parts fly across the whole screen. Because popcorn enemies are frequent, I like how this creates a constant chaos of military part remainings flying everywhere. It keeps your eyes occupied and gives you a feeling that you control a very powerful ship. My question is what games started this style? I know Raiden 2 in 1993 has a very similar feel. I know many, if not most, military STGs have some aspects of this (like the Strikers series, Gun & Frontier) but the level of detail and the quantity is not the same as with Raiden 2 and Battle Garegga. Any more game like these two I have forgotten or missed? I guess there are many more recent ones like Ibara though.

Quick questions regarding slow down in two games:

First of all, Gradius Gaiden, how bad was the slowdown in the old PS2s and how smoothly does it run on PS1? I have the newest model PS2 (-90000) which fixes the slowdown (according to the Wiki) and after playing it, the stage seems generally fine but there is still a touch of slowdown (very very minor, but it is there) when firing (I was at full options/lasers/missiles at the time and I wonder if I was powered down if any slowdown would be noticible). Was it perfectly smooth on the PS1 or was this common then as well too? Generally speaking the game (so far, I died at the 7st boss...) seems to be pretty much slowdown/loading time free... Exactly how bad did the old PS2 get... I've heard it plays at  half the speed, which... I don't know how slow that is.

Speaking of half of the speed, a weird issue I've been having with R-Type Delta. Here's a post I made about it earlier (no replies received): I'll encounter massive slowdown in certain portions of Stage 2 (just before the boss and at the boss). The game literally grinds to nearly a halt. It's weird because its very, very random (only happens now and then), and if I die and restart in the same section (or if it occurs in the section before the boss and then goes to the boss), it will play normally I bought the game brand new this year so it's definetly not an issue with the disc. The error only occurs so far in stage 2 (I've only played the first four stages). Anyone else experience anything similar?

For the record this is the R's best version of R-Type Delta.

Hmm, maybe just a general hardware question but can slowdown be attributed to a machine's wear and tear? While I feel I've taken very good care of my current PS2 the truth is I've been using it regularly for well over six years (probably close to ten, memory's failing me a bit!) now and I do travel with it... I guess I'm concerned about this since a game I'm playing at the moment (Tenchu Kurenai) also has quite a bit of that grind to halt slowdown I experienced in R-Type Delta...

I have a small question. What is the music used for Death Label Hibachi? It's different from the music used in DOJ White Label.

I have another problem, I downloaded Star Parodier and I put it on my Magic Engine emulator after putting the ISO for the game on Alcohol 52%. However, when I start the game up and go to the ship selection screen, I can't choose a ship. I tried pressing the Run button, Select button, even used one of the arrows and buttons, but I still can't select it. Is there something wrong with the emulator? Or the ISO itself? Or maybe Alcohol isn't a good ISO program to use?

Star Parodia doesn't work in Magic Engine, use Ootake.

Question:

Do non-analog PS1 controllers work for controlling PS2 shmups/retro compilations?

I am thinking about buying a Sunsoft Sunstation pad to allay the dualshock's less-than-adequate d-pad. I would just like to make sure it works for playing things like the Taito Legends series, Capcom Classics, Gradius V, etc.

It depends solely on the game. There are some titles that absolutely require an analog controller to be present, despite the game being perfectly playable with digital-only controls. The ones I can remember off the top of my head are the Mega Man Anniversary Collection and the Star Soldier remake.

The Mega Man X Collection and the titles you listed work fine with digital-only controllers.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Great; thanks for the information! It would help me 1CC anything, but it will at least finally give my left thumb a break.

I'm not too fond of the MM Classic Collection anyhow; so at least it's not a total loss, ha.

I just got Mushihimesama Futari for my UK 360, but I can't figure out how to get the Black Label DLC. Has it been removed from the store or something?

If I pick the Black Label option on the menu, there is some Japanese text and something about the Y or B button. Y brings up an XBL system dialog that says "there are no items available for purchase at this time", and B just goes back to the previous screen.

On the XBL marketplace under 'add-ons', if I start typing 'mushi' in the search box it suggests "mushihimesamahutariblacklavel" but if I select it it then says "Didn't find anything. Try another search, blah blah".

I have found what appears to be the product's page on the Japanese XBL site, is it possible to buy it from here and then it will somehow show up on my 360? Do I need a Japanese XBL account to buy from there?

Hi,

What game out of the ones I own is a good place to start when learning to play Shmup-games? I know that you should pick the one that appeals to you the most. But objectively, what is the easiest or best game (out of these) for someone "new" to the genre to learn and get better?

Deathsmiles
Muchi Muchi Pork
Pink Sweets
Mushihimesama Futari
DoDonPachi Resurrection
DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou
Akai Katana
Ikaruga
Guwange
Trouble Witches Neo
Triggerheart Exelica
Shooting Love 10th Anniversary XIIZEAL & ZEAL (Soon, not yet arrived)

I love shmups and I also love the idé of getting good at them but never had the patience to do so until now. But as you can see I have a tendency to buy them anyway :)

Deathsmiles is probably the easiest since you can adjust the difficulty for most stages; Mushi Futari isn't too terribly tough on "Original" mode either, especially if you download the Black Label extra mode. DDP Resurrection gives you lots of autobombs and isn't too hard a clear when played in "Strong" style, but can also be kinda overwhelming until you get used to it.

2. Short Words

Has anyone ever played Star Soldier for the PS2, GC, or PSP? If so, has anyone played the PS2 or GC versions with a normal controller? Is the game as hard as everyone thinks?

It's been a bit since I last fired the PS2 version up, but I don't recall it being overly tough, especially since you have a bullet-cancelling special shot.

I think its alleged difficulty stems mainly from the lack of autofire, at least in the GC version. Not sure if it was added for the others.
