I've been looking at the possibility of buying a scanline generator for my composite av output consoles but most of the affordable ones only take VGA. I was wondering if I could get a composite to VGA converter box like this one, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tv-Rca-Composit ... 4ad2f0dc27 connect it to a scanline generator like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scanline-Genera ... 1e818b25c4 and get a decent picture on my HDTV
I'm not looking for the crispiest of pictures, I just want to get something similar to when I played my consoles on my CRT. Just wondering if composite video would look decent through a scanline generator.

Re: Composite video and VGA Scanline Generator
Why would you want to use composite? Composhite aside, that scaler + SLG combo won't work. You need 480p VGA for proper scanlines and that scaler apparently doesn't output in 640x480. Most likely you would also have to deal with deinterlacing artifacts and input lag.

if you REALLY want to use composite, look for an iScan Plus unit. Right now there are two v2 units on ebay.com for around $60, but sometimes they're around $35-40. These work well with 240p signals and output in 480p which you need to use a SLG unit.

Re: Composite video and VGA Scanline Generator
Thanks for the suggestions, guys
It's just that I want to have scanlines for three of my consoles and while my dreamcast can output VGA with a VGA box both my n64 and gamecube can't output rgb without modding or getting a rare $200+ composite cable. And I'm really bad with modding, the ratio of consoles I've broken vs. consoles I've successfully modded is almost 4:1

You don't need fake scanlines for 240p content, they are already there. When using composhite, they just aren't very defined. Try S-Video for your N64 and GameCube. It's quite a jump in quality, scanlines will be more defined, and no mods necessary, just a new AV cable.

Re: Composite video and VGA Scanline Generator
You do need fake scanlines on displays that don't naturally have scanlines, like HDTVs.

Sucks that you're bad at modding, as an alternative to the $200 GameCube component cable was just released by Unseen. If the soldering is the problem, buy a practice kit and put a few hours into it on a test board, it will definitely pay off in the long run.
