Movies you've just watched

Maze Runner. Somehow I thought there was gonna be more...running and less drama. Not too shabby but watching it once is more than enough. Seeing there's another four books in the series one can presume there's gonna be sequels. Unless it totally flops.

Watched a few French movies recently:

Tell No One (2006) - Mystery/thriller about a guy's wife who gets murdered, but suddenly reappears eight years later. There's some illogical writing if you stop and think about it and I don't like the way they did the ending, but overall I still thought it was pretty good. And this is just a minor annoyance, but we're supposed to believe that the husband and wife grew up together when the guy is clearly 10+ years older than her. Give me a break.

Delicatessen (1991) - A black comedy set in a post-apocalyptic world about the landlord & butcher of an apartment building who uses people as his meat. It's a fairly unique premise with some nice visuals and a colorful cast of characters. It never made me laugh, but I still thought it was a lot of fun to watch.

The Crimson Rivers (2000) - A by-the-numbers detective movie starring Jean Reno. Enjoyable but forgettable.

I'm usually not a huge fan of fan-made trailers (since they often come out before the movies and are ridiculous) but this one for Empire Strikes Back is good.

I could have done without the generic action movie trailer background music. Is that song bundled with iMovie or something?

Indeed it wasn't the selling point. I still enjoyed the production though.

Yeh his face was perfect. I like the new Dredd also but whereas the original was maybe a bit too 'wacky' etc., the new one is certainly too 'serious' in tone compared to the classic Dredd feel I'd remember (everything up until about prog 700 is what I know best (though tbh Dredd was probably my least fave 2000 AD story)).

Saw Interstellar tonight. It's an aesthetic masterpiece, but the more I think about it, the dumber basically everything about the plot becomes. Unfortunate that the first so-called 'hard SF' film to hit the mainstream in God knows how long is so mired in inconsistencies and idiotic exposition.

I agree. I've watched both recently & each does well in it's own way, but neither of them got the right dosage of humor. The Dredd comics are always sadistically funny, & have alot of delicious satire in them. I suspect the comedy is treated the way it is in film so as to not offend American viewers. The book is rife with stereotypes & exaggerated takes on US culture. I think it's drokkin' hilarious myself, especially the idea of 'Suicide Day', where the citizens are so stupid that offing yourself goes into fashion.

But yeah, I'd love to see a film version of The Robot Wars and the rebellion of Call Me Kenneth.

personally I would love a Nemesis The Warlock movie, in particular the parts whereABC Warriors books crossed over with it - I think between [/i]Nemesis[/i] Book VI and VII.

Man I really liked the Dredd film, but it felt like a movie out of place. Tanking felt inevitable next to the dumb hollywood fodder it was playing next to, but then again, was it even marketed? The film would have been a great introduction to a larger piece based off some of those awesome comic story arcs I've heard of (but am too much of a slouch to have actually read.) I agree with Drauch that there is definitely humor, but it is very deadpan.

Finally saw Snowpiercer last night.

I was told beforehand that Tilda Swinton was supposed to be a parody of Ayn Rand, which I was looking forward to, but I was sorely disappointed that she wasn't saying any actual Randian philosophy to satirize. She was just a moustache-twirling villain. This movie's satire isn't even at the level of Bioshock.

I liked the action, especially how anybody could die at any time.

I think when the movie shined, it was from actors elevating their characters beyond the script. Especially...

Ed Harris' performance as the John Galt parody. I love the way he played himself as a man who's living the nightmare of getting exactly what he wished for. He hates the situation he found himself in, but can see no way out, so he shields himself with layers upon layers of cynicism. You got the feeling from his performance that he was trying just as hard to convince himself as he was Chris Evans. I love that his last words were a sarcastic, "Oh great!"

But yeah, whoever it was at the studio who wanted to bury this movie made a terrible decision. If it went to theaters it probably would have died a quiet death. By burying it, they turned the movie into an underground cult sensation.

Say what? It's the most successful South Korean movie of all time. When I saw it in Seoul all the theatres were packed out, all day long.

It doesn't deserve to be a cult sensation anyway, since it's not sensational. It's a fairly entertaining one time thing, and it's easy enough to look past all the flaws and weaknesses, to its credit. Hardly the stuff classics are made of, however. It's way too goofy, the ending blows, and the CG sucks balls.

It was only about half way through I realised it might actually be a really dull, empty movie dressed up as something high-end.

I loved the idea of the main character though, and Johansson's realisation of it. And it was shot very well, at times. I enjoyed the locations too, and the apparent use of lots of real world observational footage. Shame it was utterly bloody boring at times.

Wow, interesting. So it never got a mainstream release, it just played the indie circuit?

I was wondering how the west would receive it. It had almost a year head start in Korea. But after literally selling out in SK (for reasons unbeknownst to me) I'm curious as to why the foreign distributors tried to bury it.

Delicatessen is very good. It's not a comedy... It feels like a comic book at times, not very surprising if you consider where Jeunet comes from.

The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1: **

Got dragged to see this one tonight, never having read the books or seen either of the first two films, so basically none of it made any sense. The result is pretty much a whole bunch of wallowing in misery that explains nothing, that resolves nothing, and that basically does nothing to justify splitting the book it came from into two movies. Naturally, the friend who dragged us to it loved every minute of it and was seeing it for the second time.

I just caught the last half of a film from the mid-80's that pushes the homosexual agenda further than any movie in modern times. And am I the only one that didn't know Tim Robbins was in Top Gun?

lot of cool movie discussion the last couple weeks, i've been too busy to participate but have been following along. for myself, i've been watching some Michael Mann and other 80s stuff.

Manhunter - so good, and i normally don't care for serial killer movies. there's all these realistic procedural touches, but deep down the movie is an expressionist fantasy (actually, that could apply to most of Mann's movies I've seen so far). a kind of bravado and wish fulfillment for the intensely lived life pervades everything, down to the "happy" end.

Thief - also really good, great dialogue and characters. I really want to see this again, had a lost cat personal crisis right after the movie so my memory of it isn't quite as focused.

I liked it all right, but it doesn't make me laugh much. Pretty dark, visually very charged, and I find it quite charming and ridiculous. Amelie is Jeunet's masterpiece for me. Everything in that movie screams "Love me!", and I can't help but do so.

Well, the obvious first, Linklater is an absolutely amazing filmmaker. I've mentioned in the thread before my love for Before Sunset, but this goes beyond it. Bold doesn't even start to describe the work here. How can you even take on something like that?!

The movie struck a chord with me and I could connect to it more than pretty much any movie I've watched before (several thousands...) The feelings, the people, the opportunities, the choices, the patterns that keep repeating themselves, the moments shared, love lost and found, loneliness, the branching paths through life, anger... I'll let you look into it and make up your mind about it, but I felt the movie was talking to me, straight through to me. Stellar acting from most. An absolute must-watch in my book.
