I want to pick up a Wii U soon but I've noticed that the Wii U doesn't support optical audio out. My 5.1 receiver is old and doesn't take HDMI. I should be able to run the HDMI to my tv and use the wii component or composite cables and run that to my stereo so I can at least have decent stereo sound. Apparently there is an option in the Wii U OS to switch the audio to A/V out. Could someone here confirm that for me?

The only connection types I saw were "HDMI" and "Non-HDMI" .. however the PS3 does have the functionality you're talking about.

I'm pretty sure that's the setting I'm looking for.

Apparently this setting wasn't available at launch and was added later.

Thanks for looking.

Do pick it up, it's an excellent game that's quite challenging if you don't decide to go for secrets.

Guess DK Freeze is on my list.... lol

For me, the Wii U I own is just as much about the build in Wii emulator. I got the Punch Out for it and having a total blast. I could also play the lightgun games on the Wii if I could be bothered to actually calibrate the pointer properly.

The only annoying thing is the ridiculous system updates. Fuck those.

Yeah, taking close to 20 minutes to update the console is not cool .. at all. Also, not being able to install retail games to internal storage, despite last gen consoles having this feature.

The Wii U has some amazing games, but the hardware and software are both sub-par ..

At least there aren't 10+ GB mandatory patches for every game.

One question: is Diddy Kong's jet pack an essential part of the platforming? I liked the original DKCR3D, but there was little precision when it came to bouncing off enemies, so long as Diddy was around. Whenever I tried to bounce properly.. SMW style, the jet pack would kick in and break the chain. Sorta ruined the experience for me.

You can team up with Diddy, Dixie and Cranky, none of them are absolutely required.

To further clarify: does every level feature a side-kick-generating barrel? I guess if I were a purist, I would simply ignore them. Easier said than done, in my case, at least. I guess mainly I wonder if it's worthwhile and/or practical to play the game straight like a Mario platformer.

Every level has a sidekick barrel and some are limited to a specific character, though there are also the ones that switch between characters. I found the high jumps off enemies to be easier to pull off once I realized that it doesn't work like SMW and requires you to press the button slightly before jumping on the enemy. I like both Dixie and Cranky better than Diddy, though. Dixie has the hair spin for extra height and Cranky has a pogo similar to Uncle Scrooge in Duck Tales NES.

I played the whole game with Diddy the first time, for some secrets you need to swap characters. But they are not vital for progress.

Has Nintendo mentioned if the Gamecube controller adapter will work with Wii and Wii VC games?

EDIT:

Nevermind.

So you can play Wii and Wii VC games with a Wii remote or a Wii remote + Classic Controller?

Those are in fact your only options, because Wii U controllers aren't supported for backwards compatibility.

You do need to use both Dixie and Cranky periodically to fully clear Tropical Freeze and access the temples and hidden final world. Dixie can boost through strong underwater currents and Cranky can hop across spiked floors. Diddy has no special abilities beyond hovering.

I would still wait for a hands on to confirm since they first said it would work with Wii games. Also, the wording doesn't specifically say Wii games won't work with it, just that it won't work on the original Wii. The text says it's specifically for SSB, but it doesn't say specifically that Wii games won't work on it, only that it won't work with other Wii U games. It's early yet, so there's still a possibility that compatibility for more Wii U games could be added in the future. Some Wii games like Sonic Colors support the GC controller.

I have to check, but if I remember correctly, he does have a special ability underwater to make DK swim faster with his jetpack.

Did he say that in reference to the Wii U only, or the 3DS as well? Or was it unclear?
They're not going to remove region locking on a console that's already out, I'm sure there's too many existing contracts.

I was really surprised by the campaign against region locking on the 3DS & Wii U: there was a time to do that, before the consoles launched. How the campaign managed to miss that time period by so much was amazing.

Mario Kart 8 DLC launched. Most of the new tracks are cool. The Excitebike track is pretty weaksauce, almost 100% randomness. Best new course - Hyrule Castle, Best retro course - Yoshi Island

I never really played Mario Kart or any other weapon-based racing games seriously, but don't they all have a serious element of randomness due to how the weaponry works? The only racing game with weapons I've played a lot of is Wipeout (and I prefer its itemless/weaponless racing modes).

Yeah, it's still pretty bullshit, especially once everyone reaches a baseline level of racing skill. But you can turn off items if you want. Or just do time trials.

Modnation Championships for the PS3... by far the best Kart Racing Game EVER!!!

Very balanced requires tons of skills and really really fun to play.

This game has a boost and a barrier mechanism so there's tons of strategies when your up front. Weapons are very well balanced and can be turned off as well.

The only downside to this is that the load time is crazy due to the amount of customizations you can do in the game.

If you can get around the load times you'd be in for a real treat in competitive Kart Racing!

I've been playing Mario Kart 8 recently and its okay.... guess I'm spoiled by Modnation.

Stupid question I know but: being GameCube controllers fitting into the same old port (albeit the adapter) they'll work for the Wii/GameCube consoles as well?

Cant believe I never heard of that one, even in the racing game thread ?!
Anyway, game looks very fun, certainly an hour buy for me, thanks.

The game can be had or merely 10$ brand new in the bargain bin. Its extremely fun and well balanced.

Single player is annoying with the AI being very cheap at times but the multiplayer is all about skill and strategy. Items in this game is actually fun to use compared to Mario Kart.

The better player usually comes out on top all the time. Its worth a go honestly and the customization is great just check out how creative some of the up-loaders are.

My twin has started doing a Bayonetta 2 challenge run - all pure platinum, hardest skill, gaze of despair equipped (makes enemies constantly enraged). He's only got Chapter 1 done so far, but it looks pretty insane already.

new Zelda footage and gameplay
World seems a little barren in the footage, but I understand it has probably a year at least left of development.
Grass sure is lush and beautiful, and that slow-mo horse vault looked straight out of Vanquish.
Lining shots up with the bow via the gamepad's gyro was painful to watch. I really hope the Pro controller will be compatible.
Also good to know real horses don't run into trees very often

Twilight Princess already had an overextended, mostly barren overworld. This will just be expanding that to Elder Scrolls scale.

I really liked the art style in Skyward Sword and Wind Waker.

This looks more like Ocarina of Time to me and Twilight Princess. Not my favorite but

Looking forward to seeing more of the world :)

Pikmin 3 is really good.
