Hey Shmups.

I've been checking out the forums for some time now and I thought I'd become more active on here. I've been getting more into shmups in the last few years and I find they're one of my favorite types of games. Like many of us I've been gaming since I was a kid and as I've started to buy more arcade PCB's I've been looking deeper into the shmups genre and found it to be incredibly deep, diverse, and of course an ton of fun. I post on Neo-geo and Arcade Otaku as West.

All the best

Hey folks!

I've been lurking for a long time, and I figured it's time for an intro since due to having less and less time to game lately, I've found that shooters are by far the perfect way to get great bursts of gaming in just minutes. :) So, the vast majority of my gaming these days is shmups!

I've been collecting and restoring classics from the golden age of arcades for 6 years now, and my vertical cabs have been getting the most play lately with Strikers '45 and Raiden Fighters 2. I'm looking forward to finally being an active part of the community here!

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I live in Belgium and am 33 years old. I have been collecting retro console games for about 12-13 years but I have gotten into arcade gaming only a few years ago. Although I do definitely like shmups it's not the only genre I love to play. Currently my (arcade) collection is mainly focused around Neo Geo stuff.

I'm joining to learn more details on games /shmups that look interesting ... I hope I'm not tempted too much when the pricy PCB's come by...

Hey Everyone!

I've been researching some retro gaming goodness for the past month and saw this place pop up in a lot in my findings. People say that this is a good community and in my lurking I've found it to be extremely helpful, so I decided to join up for my foray into retro games.

This week I picked up a Sony BVM-20F1U. I've found a few consoles around town including a SNES Mini and a Toploader NES. Currently hunting down the various Sega systems and a Neo Geo. Looking to have my consoles modded out so I can get on with the RGB gaming!

My first shmup was probably Sol-Feace on the Sega CD. Came free with the system I believe. The game was crazy to me as I had never seen anything like it before. I don't remember being very good at it, but it was an incredible visual assault on my pre-teen senses. I'm a sucker for science fiction space battles. I would love to find it again if i can get a Sega CD system. Really regret getting rid of all that stuff when i was younger.

In real life i'm a 33 year old, stay at home Dad who reads a lot. I also operate a painting service for miniature gaming as a side thing to bring in fun money.

My portfolio for those interested in that type of thing.

Hi, I'm JJ. I'm actually in the process of selling most of my consoles (never got around to MishihimeSama Futari 1.5 on the 360 >_>), but use MAME and such.

First/most important early SHMUP memory is probably Strikers 1945 at Pizza Hut, and I love the genre. I've been gaming for a long time and have been trying to get out of the hobby in general, but the great thing about SHMUPs is that you can have a meaningful play session of 20-30 minutes, rather than the Call of Dutys and the Civilizations and Final Fantasys that can be great fun, but take a lot of time.

My favorite SHMUP so far is DoDonPachi, but now that my brother who wouldn't bother to play anything but DDP has moved to Korea, I can play others. I prefer vertical shooters, and prefer the late 80s and later SHMUPs.

Hey guys! This is Teraforce88. I got into shmups around 2006 or so, and I've been hooked ever since! It kind of started with Bosconian (and its sequel, Blast-off!), but the SHMUP that truly got me hooked was..... PHALANX. Yes, the game featuring an old hillbilly playing his banjo on the cover is the game that got me into SHMUPs! Of course, I've played many, many more SHMUPs since then. It's about the only genre of game I play anymore these days--most other genres take way more time and dedication than I have in my life. SHMUPS are both short AND intense, which is perfect for me.

My favorite SHMUPs are typically any Gradius game and any SHMUP made by compile (Space Megaforce and Blazing Lazers FTW!), but I'll play any shmup as long as:
1. It's not super easy (ex: Thunder Spirits for SNES)
2. It's not unfairly difficult; i.e. it's not cheap hard (ex: Silver surfer for NES; Legion for TGCD; Nemesis 2, Nemesis 3, and Salamander for the MSX1). Shmups can be very difficult and still be enjoyable (ex: Recca for the NES)
3. It's not bullet-hell. It's too had to see and determine whether something will hit you or not in BH games. Of course, the only BH shooter I've played is Castle of Shikigami III on my CRT (not rotated), so things tend to extremely hard to see to begin with.

I also have a YouTube channel.

Thanks!

Hi everyone, my name is Kris, and I am here with one great reason - to make games. :)
I have been playing games for my whole life, and 2D arcade shooters are one of my favorite genres.
I love feeling of destruction, feeling of flying, and feeling of domination.
For most of the last 2-3 years I have been making 2D arena shooters, I design and code, while my friends make art and music.
Slowly I am making progress, and I realized that maybe on this forum I could get more feedback, and maybe make something great together with you guys. I am really passionate about how the game feels and plays.
I am not really shmup expert, but I love Metal Slug series, Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu, Ikaruga, Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, Death VS Monstars, Luftrauser and Nuclear Throne. :)
Anyway, see you on the forums!

Hello everyone! I read this forum for some time but decided to register here because i finally 1cc'ed my first hard shmup. I started to take in interest in shmups just recently, soon after ikaruga pc port announcement but before that i played and liked jamestown and jets'n'guns. So far i only 1cc'ed a few doujin shmups on easy mode and today i added crimzon clover to that list.

Video editor in training here, I know a thing or two, but I'm always willing to learn more to get the best quality for my videos.

I play games in my spare time, and I'm trying to learn more about the world. I crack jokes, I also lack a good sense of direction.

Nothing really interesting about me, but I really appreciate being here, typical guy in a nutshell.

It's definitely time consuming... but its interesting to see the reactions of people who view the final result, it can be a quick job but that will turn into something bad. Thank you for your encouragement :)

hey, its really cool to see so many stg fans out there! I don't know anyone who likes the genre, well maybe my brother sometimes. big thanks to softdrink 117 for leading me to this forum

most of my life I guess ive mainly been an rpg player, but the past few years I cant play anything but stgs. if try and play anything else it just doesn't appeal much to me, its weird. it all started with dodonpachi on the SS, then suddenly I wanted donpachi, then shienryu. before I knew it I was buying a 360 (might I add, is a system all my friends will tell you I hated and even before its launch I swore id never ever buy one).

id have to say all the dodonpachi games are my favorite, minus bee storm (no port, looks weird anyway, and looks easy lol), with ibara (ps2 port) being a very close second.

recently ive been playing a bit of salamander 2 on the Saturn and einhander on ps1..... but really they are just breaks inbetween dodonpachi daioujou. I gotta say, daioujou is wicked hard. ive been able to 1cc dodonpachi, donpachi and saidaioujou, but I just haven't been able to 1cc daioujou. still I think it may be my favorite of the ddp bunch

Hahaha glad you found it okay. XD

You've cleared SDOJ? Arcade mode? Because that game is seriously hard! I have more trouble with that than DOJ, for sure. And awesome that you play Ibara. I noticed your question about Arrange mode on the youtube video; I personally don't know enough about it to comment, unfortunately, since I don't have the PS2 port (I play Ibara on PCB). I've heard that the Arrange mode is somewhat of a middle ground between the normal game and Ibara Kuro's system. I know that a few people here have played it though (KAI comes to mind).

Anyways, welcome to the forums! :D

yeah, funny thing is apparently ive been a member of this forum since the summer....and I don't remember ever signing up lol. ive been reading like a madman, a wealth of info here for sure!

yes, cleared sdoj, but not doj. I am starting to see that that's a bit odd lol, i think the big reason is playing for score in each game and the hitbox. on sdoj the route to chain is pretty much forced on you, also it seems MUCH easier to chain. on doj the route to keep a chain is not always so apparent, could just be me. the hitbox in sdoj is in your face and blinking lol, and on doj... im not so sure, even after playing it for some time. first i thought it was the blue/green cockpit, then i thought it was a rectangle shape from the cockpit to the mid-rear of the ship (type a player), i still am not sure lol, but it really seems like when i lead the bullets slowly to one side and then when it comes time to cut back i always get blown away when im thinking i should have made it, never had that problem in sdoj :/ that may also stem from trying to keep a chain at all costs lol, god its so strict

im not familiar with ibara kuro, is that like a special release pcb? also, one ibara fan to another, what do you think of pink sweets? gotta say i was a tad disappointed. perhaps cause i was expecting something closer to ibara i guess, the infinite bomb mechanic was a let down for me. lol actually i ended up playing more mm pork on that disc

Trying to maintain a chain in DOJ without a planned route is basically impossible. Even on stage 5, where there are enough enemies to freeform chain some sections, you will still need excellent timing and planning to get some of the links done correctly, and you need to have hypers ready at the right time. If you're just going for a clear I would suggest only trying to score until you've gotten both score extends and then just playing for survival; it's a great challenge and a lot of fun either way.

Ibara Kuro is Ibara Black Label. Same thing. It's a very rare PCB only release that has a scoring mechanic based on grazing bullets and cancelling after building up graze multipliers. Interesting gameplay concept, but most people who play it say that it's inferior to the original game.

As far as Pink Sweets goes: I very much want to learn to play it, but right now it confuses the hell out of me. It's fun, sure, but I don't understand how to play it for low rank or for score, so I just kind of do stuff and then die eventually. Also, the last couple stages are appallingly difficult. I definitely want to try to learn it sometime. But yeah, most of my time with that port has been spent on the Pork side as well. :V

Hi All.

Just registered as a new member. been reading hardware related topics on the forum for a while, but now it's time to post some of my own creations.
I'm only just getting into retro gamming and shmups. I've learnt a lot from Fudoh's website and Fagin's and FutureMatt5's youtube channels.
Here's a quick list of hardware I have and use at the moment. I'm a electrical engineering student, so can't collect much at the moment.

Consoles:
  • Sega Megadrive II
  • Nintendo 64
  • Nintendo Gamecube
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Microsoft Xbox
  • Microsoft Xbox 360
  • GroovyMAME
CRT Displays:
  • Sony BVM2010p
  • Sony KVHR36M31 HD CRT (88kg very heavy)
  • 21 inch Dell PC Trinitron P1130
Other:
  • SLG3000
  • SyncStrike
  • GBS8200
I've been working on some projects that I hope to be posting in the hardware section soon. Hopefully you guys can help make good use of them.

Hi All,

I've been playing shmups on and off since I was kid. The first one I really enjoyed was on the TurboGrafx - I don't even remember the name anymore, but you played as bugs/beetles. It was colorful and the upgrades awesome. R-type and Ikaruga are probably my favorites (although I'm starting to discover that that might be cliche - either way though, they're good representations of what I like).
I'm an indie game developer now and I'm working on a twin-stick shooter/shmup. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some feedback here once the game is in beta =]

Hi guys, get to know of this website because of TGS 2013. Was not a shmup player at all until 2014 where i was introduced to bullet soul infinite burst via my man

Played once and it got me to work hard on my first clear on bullet soul infinite burst. Was really into rpgs and adventure games prior to that. Get to know miku last year and it has been one of my fave games todate

Hey everybody! Just found this site when I was doing some research on shmups, seems like a really cool community. I've been into shmups for as long as I can remember, right now, I'd have to say that my favourite is Layer Section on Saturn. I've never gotten good enough at any game to 1cc it though... But I see that you all have some really cool strategies and lots of good info to help better myself! Nice to meet you all!

Good evening all. By chance, I recently picked up a CRT dumped on the streets. It's a Sony Trinitron, easily rotatable, and it's a great excuse to get back into my glory days. The Neo and Saturn have come out off storage and into regular play. Joining here now is a better time than ever. Thanks.

Hi all!

My name in Julián, I live in Spain. English is not my mother tongue so please forgive my mistakes.

I, as all of you are, am a shoot'em up fan. Always a crappy player, of course. 1cc is like a dream to me.

I play them on Famicom, Saturn, MD and SFamicom hardware, mainly. I purchased recently a whitey PC Engine, I'm very excited with it.

I owe this forum a lot because, among a lot of things, fudoh's ode to displays (I am the proud owner of a 2130QM and a 14M4E) and the list of SNES revisions http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43689. Thanks to its help I found a 1-chip 02 in eBay.

Hi guys! I've been lurking around here for a while so I decided I might as well register. I got into the shmup genre around 6 or 7 years ago through Kenta Cho's Torus Trooper and some of his other games, and Touhou shortly after that. Since then I've been playing shmups on and off, mostly Touhou and various freeware shmups such as Cho Ren Sha 68k and Blue Wish Resurrection. In the past few months, I've been playing a lot more shmups than before, both in quantity and variety (as well as gleaning a lot of tips from the strategy threads here to improve my play). I look forward to actually participating in the community here!

Hello…. I am new here so just introducing…been playing shmups for many years although not so many of late. I hope joining this forum and digging out a few old games will rekindle the passion! Currently only own a DC with a few choice games, Mars Matrix, Under Defeat, Sturmwind…. Also got SDLMAME running with QMC2 on OSX and been enjoying a few old school shooters there. Forum seems good, a wealth of info by the looks of it. See ya round it! :D

Hi! I've been lurking around for some time and finally decided to join.

I got introduced to shmups with Thunder Force 4. It's always been and still is one of my favorite games ever. I wasn't interested in other shmups until a few years ago. I saw some Dodonpachi clip in a "best shmups of all time" video and decided to try it out because it looked gorgeous. I wasn't a fan of the bullet hell pink bullet kaleidoscope aesthetic and the hundreds of bullets onscreen created doubts at first but the art was amazing so I went and played it anyway.

Instant love. Then along came Garegga, Batrider, Bakraid, Esprade and Progear. Some of these games felt like weird pieces of alienware. I had the impression that I could extract immense joy out of them but how did they work? I decide to find out more. I learn and start to get the appeal of arcade conventions like 1CC'ing and elaborate score systems. These games are even more amazing than I first thought! Millions of bullets seem ok now. I find out about homebrew games. I find that Cho Ren Sha is a miraculous, inspirational nugget of gold. Same for Hydorah. What a great genre, I say!

So far, I've only cleared TF4, Hydorah, Cho Ren Sha (1st loop) and Battle Bakraid (normal course).

These days I'm into Ibara and Great Mahou Daisakusen. The latter has one of the most peculiar scoring systems I've ever seen thus far and it's HARD.

Thanks!
