Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/WiiU

Post by NTSC-J »

Let's talk Smash Bros.

I've been playing the 3DS version since it came out here a couple weeks ago, and have yet to put it down. My thoughts:

Good stuff:

- Gachi Heya (For Glory) is the best mode in the game. The lack of a leaderboard is frustrating, but I can at least work on improving my win percentage. I'll be curious to see people post their's online. I'm pretty weak at this game, but I've rolled more than a few people with my Little Mac game.
- Pretty cool roster. What's with all the Fire Emblem, though?
- Nice music. Can't go wrong with Rockman 2 tracks and Green Hill Zone, on top of Nintendo classics.
- All that shit to collect. Loads of gashapon trophies.
- Lots of modes. Simple is fun and I like going for the challenges.

Not so good stuff:

- Smash Run sucks a butt. Boring, long, confusing, with level design so bad it better be randomly generated.
- Spotty online. Sometimes it will run in slowdown mode, other times it just stops for a while. Most of the time it runs fine, but often it doesn't.

Super excited for the states-side release. For those interested, here's what the Japanese have come up with for a tier list at the moment:

Good to see my mains and I-want-to-try characters are up there.

Interesting list. The most popular characters online in my experience are Ike, Greninja, and Captain Falcon.

Good Pacman and Duck Hunt players are the worst.

I'll be getting the 3DS game, the demo was quite good. Played a lot smoother than I thought it would.

I'll mostly be playing Mega Man because it's Mega Man, and will never touch "For Glory" mode.

I've heard varying reports on Mega Man. Some say his projectile-jab Mega Buster is game changing, the Leaf Shield makes you a throw-machine, and the Rush Coil gives you a lot of options. On the face of it, though, it seems like he's pretty weak. Been playing the demo w/ him and can totally game the AI by cancelling all their attacks by proper spacing w/ the Buster. Hopefully he'll hold up under proper competition.. because.. Mega Man.

Anyway, the Villager is probably the most interesting of the bunch. Crazy cool moves and zoning.

All in all, I just hope it's not another Smash where the light characters beat the hell from everyone else. Get totally bored watching Melee matches when it's all Fox, Falco, and Sheik. I wanna see Bowser or Gannondorf top tier.

(And I'll never give up on you, Mr. Game & Watch. Don't care what anyone says.)

I wanna see tiers fuck off. Just play the damn game and stop ranking everything. A character is only as good as the player who uses them. Anyone who tries to claim that a character is worse than others is just a scrub who can't use them properly.

Or maybe you just totally don't understand fighting games. Characters can and are better than others. That doesn't prevent people from being better than others with a worse character, it means they'll need to put in some more work.

That early teir list looks better than brawl's. Regular Samus and Gannondorf are still low tier, but at least some characters like Sonic went up. Promising that Pac-Man and Palutena are high tier, as well.

Samus doesn't seem all that bad to me, but I haven't played much of multiplayer yet. Still waiting for my friends to get the game this week.

The online appears nearly dead to me, at least in comparison to Mario Kart 8. I always have to wait for people to fight against, even when doing 1v1 for glory matches. Much worse is for fun FFA where I hardly get any opponents at all. Maybe the japanese just don't play this online as much as they play MK8, so hopefuly it'll work better when the game's out globally.

You can't use the customized characters online, so it's kind of a waste.

The final roster was such a damn disappointment, what a shame really. It's still an impressive character lineup though.

I agree. Without changing the number of characters at all, we could drop the three idiotic clones they added and swap them for much more interesting characters. I reiterate that they explicitly removed clones from brawl in order to make a more diverse roster, and they roll back on that. Also, too many swords.

"BRING BACK DR. MARIO" - no one ever

The addition of
Spoiler
Bowser Jr. with the koopalings as alts
is awesome, though.

Oh there are more issues with the roster than just that. First of all, like you said, clones are stupid when there are way better character choices instead. Lucina, Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, Robin, Rosalina, (sorry about this) Bowser Jr., and R.O.B. did not need to be in the game.
Lucina: Lazy clone
Dr. Mario: ^see above
Dark Pit: ^see above
Robin: should have replaced Ike so there would only be 2 FE characters, a sword user, and a magic user.
Rosalina: Mario does not need any more reps
Bowser Jr.:^see above
R.O.B.: Obscure one-hit wonder accessory for the NES, no reason for him to be in the game

Also, the decision to make Sheik/Zelda and Zero Suit Samus/Samus into their own separate characters was beyond stupid, it just takes up more character slots.

Shiek/Zelda and ZSS/Samus play entirely differently though. They had them on the same character slot in Brawl, and I hated how you had to use an obscure code to pick ZSS or Shiek. I appreciate them actually splitting different characters into different slots.

On the other hand, Dr.Mario and Dark Pit can swallow a rake.

More specifically: You can't use them online if you play with random people, but you can if you play with people you have in your 3DS friend list. At least that's what I've come to understand. Personally I'm pretty sure my onlin eplaying is only going to be with friends so

Picking up the game on my way home from school tomorrow, looking forwards to playing Mega Man with the control scheme I actually want to use.

Agreed that there is too much FE, but replacing Ike is the wrong way to go. Though if they could have a male and female robin in the same slot, they surely could have done the same damn thing with Pit and Mario? Hell, plug Lucas back in as an alt for Ness while you're at it.

Though, those last three are terrible reasons. Too much Mario? That's your ONLY reason?

Regarding R.O.B., people used a similar reason about obscure origin for the ice climbers and now that they're gone, people want them back. I think R.O.B. was put in because he represents the border between the old Nintendo that made toys and the new Nintendo that makes games. Though I'm pretty sure there could be much more interesting characters to take his place.

Also I'm going to add Diddy Kong to that list because I hate that little fucker. Little bitch can go jump off a cliff.

I can kinda see both sides of that issue. Though iirc, all you had to do was hold down Z. Not much of a code really.

Also at the very least I can respect that Dark Pit is actually a separate character in the Kid Icarus universe, whereas Dr. Mario is literally just Mario in a doctor's outfit.

The circle pad takes some getting used to - tilt/jump/smash maneuvers are difficult to distinguish at first - but aside from that there's no real difficulty in picking it up. The GCN controller stick had an octagon slot, which many will likely miss. (No one who 'gets it' will lament the lack of a c-stick.) With some practice it's not really an issue, though.

I heard that Dr. Mario was ranked better than Mario in Brawl?

Anyway, I have this preordered from Amazon and I can't wait to play.

edit: nm. I was getting brawl and melee mixed up. As far as FE goes, I'm just glad to finally see some female FE characters in SSB.
