Play US Gamecube using a VGA monitor?

Post by Blue »

I've got a small room, and am curious about various ways of hooking a Gamecube up to the same screen as my PC. What sorts of converters are available? One of my main concerns is image quality. I've heard bad things about bleeding colors, overly high saturation, etc.

Does anyone have a similar setup? Any thoughts or opinions are welcome. Please forgive any terminology errors, I know very little about hardware (but am happy to learn).

AFAIK, there's a component to VGA converter/cable thingy at Lik Sang. Of course, you have to have a GC model that has the component output. I cannot speak from experience, but I hear the quality is good. It's not an upscan converter.

If your Gamecube is the older model with the digital output, you can buy a VGA lead directly from Hong Kong or Japan. Its not an official cable but a modded component video cable.

Its definately the best option for VGA on the cube.

Unfortunately it only works with games which support 480p (progressive scan) and you will have to boot games by switching the machine on with a disc inside and holding down the B button. When the game goes into 480p you will get an image. (this means you cannot perform memory card management through VGA since the dashboard is 480i only).

Mario, Resident evil 4, Zelda etc all have 480p compatibility... Something like Super monkey ball and resident evil 0,1,2,3 do not support 480p. So it depends on your compatibility list.

Thank you for your helpful replies. It is indeed the older model with digital output., so I guess the simpler VGA cable is the best option.
Is around $50 reasonable for the cable? That seems high considering that I've seen component-to-VGA boxes for less.

On another note, unless I'm mistaken all my favorite games are 480p enabled- Ikaruga, The Wind Waker, Super Smash Brothers Melee. Pikmin, and Animal Crossing. Yay!

GC component cable + Transcoder together will cost more than this hacked VGA cable. I'm also willing to bet that it will be clearer/sharper image than a transcoded signal would have. Only good thing about the transcoder is that you could use for other consoles too as long as you have their respective component cables.

The cable is definately worth $50.

For Xbox, XB360, Dreamcast and Gamecube your better off with the cable option. For all the other consoles you need an upscan convertor.
