Any of you do internal work inside the Playstation 2?

Post by CkRtech »

Hey all -

I gutted a PS2 today and am looking to do some video-related work on the inside. I just wanted to see if any of the shmups community has been inside the machine, and if anyone here had thoughts to add regarding the work they have done, soldering troubles/suggestions, etc.

I am planning on doing a lot of the work mentioned here: http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:p ... 2_rgb_sync

Silly question, but why would you want to do this? PS2 supports component out if I'm not mistaken, which already looks so close to RGB, that very few (if any) will notice the difference between it and "RGB". Heck my PS/2 using SVideo out looks as good as RGB on my Sony PVM!

this is for Wii but should apply to PS2/XBOX as both support 480p+ 16:9 on component

I want to remove the sync on green as well as macrovision in attempt to eliminate some of the interference that I am seeing on component output. Also, the component output looks terrible on my display. I also want to make my own csync signal and *possibly* add native RGBHV (depending on how I am feeling).

There's a thing to install on a PS2 memory card that allows 480p for a huge number of games.

I think it doesn't require any internal work.

Fudoh mentioned this but I can't find the post/thread...

You can install GSM on your memory card. http://psx-scene.com/forums/f291/gs-mod ... ack-61808/

Just registered to reply to this.
My pal v7 ps2 output is very dark and noisy on component interlaced output, which makes it look terrible. But it's not a bad cable, (official sony) because pogressive scan component is the correct brightness, and seems less noisy.
So I think there's a problem with at least some ps2 models with 15khz component output.
You can test this with any game with a brightness calibration screen, I used ridge racer V and forced it to progressive using gsm.
RGB scart output looks best, so I do a cable/settings swap to play progressive scan games (not many).
Good luck with this pls let me know your PS2 model and if you manage to remove SOG.
I'd really like a way around the cable swap.
