Hey,
I've been checking the PSone/2 games out on my PS3 and they look pretty bad, would using the games through the original system make them look any better? I'm able to use a XRGB mini with them too.
Would PSone games running through the PS2 look the same as it does running through a PSone?
Are the component cables better to use than the RGB cables on PS2 (even when running PSone games)
Which PS one console is the best to use same goes for the PS2 console, am I better of using the fat/slim models.
Thanks, I don't really have PlayStation consoles sitting around that I can test, but I'm sure someone on here knows.
How do you get the best picture out of PS1/2 games?

depends on the display and the processor you're using.would using the games through the original system make them look any better?
then certainly yes.I'm able to use a XRGB mini with them too.
yes.Would PSone games running through the PS2 look the same as it does running through a PSone?
Component allows you to easily use 480p from PS2 games that support it. Scart is (usually) limited to 240p and 480i.Are the component cables better to use than the RGB cables on PS2 (even when running PSone games)
There are a handful of PS1 games that doesn't properly run on a PS2 (Toaplan Shooting Battle and the 7th stage of Gradius Gaiden for example). Other than those you're perfectly fine with PS2 instead. Models hardly matter.Which PS one console is the best to use same goes for the PS2 console, am I better of using the fat/slim models.

What's the fault with Gradius Gaiden level 7?Fudoh wrote:There are a handful of PS1 games that doesn't properly run on a PS2 (Toaplan Shooting Battle and the 7th stage of Gradius Gaiden for example). Other than those you're perfectly fine with PS2 instead. Models hardly matter.

Slowdown. Look at the "PS1 Shmups Compatibility on PS2" at the end of BulletMagnet's The Playstation 2 (PS2) Shmups Library article.

Fudoh is the expert in these matters and for most people component is the way to go.Fudoh wrote:Component allows you to easily use 480p from PS2 games that support it. However are you "the princess and the pea" when it comes to your video images - to the point that it will motivate you to acquire all sorts of arcane knowledge about vintage video technology?
From Fudoh's article Deinterlacing, Scaling, Processing: Classic videogame systems on LCD and Plasma screens
Again most people won't notice the difference. Here Fudoh describes an alternate setup involving RGBs/RGsB - however the Extron RGB interface will add another frame of display lag.Playstation Games on the Framemeister: PS1 games look amazing on the Mini. If a PS2 with component output is used for playback, a little bit of noise of visible in dark grey areas of the screen. Other than that, there's nothing to complain about.
Finally some people are so picky that they will always use a PS1 console (with RGB) for PS1 games - never a PS2 (may simply be the "original hardware" thing).
I don't know if there is difference in video quality among the different PS1 models - but in many cases models before the SCPH-900x are favored because they have the parallel port that can be used with a PlayStation GameShark cartridge - granting access to game features that are otherwise not available, e.g. true tate on the NTSC-U Raiden Project.

There is really no difference whether you play PS1 games on a PS1 or PS2. Although from what I've seen with my own eyes, PS1 games look a tiny bit better on a PS2. Using the Mini will make a big difference. Especially if using RGB. Using the PS3 will create lots of lag and you only have two choices. Razor sharp polygons and pixels without any scanlines or a really soft and muddy filter.Vault94 wrote:Hey,

Not sure about PSone but like I said playing PS1 games through the PS2 look a tiny bit better IMO compared to using an older model PS1 like the 900x, 750x, 700x, etc.Vault94 wrote:Would PSone games running through the PS2 look the same as it does running through a PSone?
I'd say no. Component is noisy on the PS2 plus the you can get the system to support 480p with the right equipment.Vault94 wrote:Are the component cables better to use than the RGB cables on PS2 (even when running PSone games)
Most people say the Psone gives out the best picture and from what I've seen I'd say they are correct. It's nothing major but if you compare several PS1 models together you can tell there is a slight difference with the PSone. As far as PS2 goes I'd assume the slim models give out a slightly better picture but I'm not certain. No one has really done any comparison shots to tell if there is a difference between models. If you plan on playing lots of PS1 games though I would go with one of the later model fats like the 3900x or 5000x. The slims have even more compatibility issues with PS1 games.Vault94 wrote:Which PS one console is the best to use same goes for the PS2 console, am I better of using the fat/slim models.

As far as PS1s go, some people swear by SCPH-5xxx consoles. Seperate audio and video DACs, more robust drive assembly compared to earlier models. Can't notice a difference to a 75xx though. Either way it's good to have the parallel port in case PSIO goes anywhere, and frankly, who wants a PSone?
There IS an image quality comparison: http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/sh ... post751614 this is just S-Video however.

Actually models DO matter: Vandal Hearts 2 (PAL) for example shows heavy graphics artifacts on PS2 9000x models while on PS2 7700x models (I think that's the one I tried it on) it plays perfectly - the same way it plays on the PSone.Fudoh wrote:There are a handful of PS1 games that doesn't properly run on a PS2 (Toaplan Shooting Battle and the 7th stage of Gradius Gaiden for example). That leads me to another weird overservation: On my PSone the framerate of Grandia (PAL again) is inconsistent, it doesn't feel fluid. On my PS2 however it does play smoothly (but it crashes from time to time).

I compared my SCPH-5500 to my DTL-H30101 E the other day and it was noticably better. Especially on the Brazil stage on Tekken 3 - that pretty much looked awful on the PlayStation 2.Xan wrote:As far as PS1s go, some people swear by SCPH-5xxx consoles. Re: How do you get the best picture out of PS1/2 games?
Only time I've had a real issue with PS1 games on a PS2 was lack of music in Ronin Blade (PAL) on my SCPH-77004. In general I think PS1DRV compatibility is quite good, but since the GPU is emulated there always might be some inaccuracies in terms of frame rates.
In terms of image quality using a sync on luma cable makes the biggest difference for me either way.

Quite tempted to get me one of those cables, or tap sync on luma to the AV port of one of my machines just to do a comparison.
