GG Aleste and GG Aleste II

Post by Despatche »

Spliced off tinotormed's thread with his permission. GG Aleste II is also known as Power Strike II, unrelated to the Master System game of the same title.
__________
Post scores in this format:

Code: Select all

GAME - DIFFICULTY
NAME - SCORE - STAGE - SPEED - TIMER - DETAILS
DETAILS is for what model of console and release of cart/disc, or what emulator and version.

SPEED is for GG Aleste II; the first game doesn't have a speed setting. TIMER is for Aleste Collection, which adds timers to everything because supposedly both of these games have infinite patterns.

Stupid deaths began in stage 4, then on stage 5 and up to the final stage. But the game is not that bad because it is too easy.

Woohoo! That mode is really hard at first, but I got the hang of it. Died stupidly at the beginning on stage 1, and then got nicked by one bullet at the final stage. Also recorded a video of this. I t may come by soon.

More GG Aleste II from last night.

Perhaps performing well in the bonus stages and shooting destroyable projectiles in some mid-bosses helped in increasing the score.

Messing around with recording in a new emulator.

GG Aleste - Special Mode
BareKnuckleRoo - 1,335,820 - ALL - BizHawk 1.8.1

Mostly used the D weapon for this to soak up revenge bullets, and because I wanted something other than N bombs which seem to be the popular weapon... Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdBC0WzrXiU

GG Aleste II - Mania Difficulty
BareKnuckleRoo - 2,035,450 - 5 - ALL - BizHawk 1.8.1

I used the Rising Masher for the sake of challenge. The homing weapon is okay but kinda iffy, the shield weapon not nearly as good as GG Aleste's and the N weapon is way too overpowered (bullet cancels, pierces, spreadshot, high damage, wut) to be fun. Every single recorded playthrough uses the N weapon because of how powerful it is.

The laser weapon isn't too shabby though, and does nice consistent piercing damage to bosses. I die a few times in the run, but I save all my bombs for the last couple of bosses (you don't lose bombs when you die, you can hoard them). Was pleased how I took out that stage 5 boss with some great dodging.

GG Aleste - Special Mode
BareKnuckleRoo - 1,497,790 - ALL - Fusion 3.64

I died a few times to those enemies that swoop in from the middle, break apart and loop back together. I keep getting smacked as they separate. Still, nice score. I used the Homing weapon pretty much exclusively because it's fun when you can't cancel bullets. It's also ridiculously good - fast, spread and homing all in one. In Special mode it can trigger tons of enemy death shots at once, but it has an advantage there too of producing lots of slowdown!

edit:

GG Aleste - Normal Mode
BareKnuckleRoo - 1,518,000 - ALL - Fusion 3.64

I would have had a screenshot if I hadn't forgotten that it's Shift-F12 and not simply F12 in Fusion (shoulda just hit printscreen I guess). Oh well, I discovered there's a safespot during the Stage 6 boss you can abuse with the W weapon to constantly kill the little enemies it launches for points. I did this for a few minutes so that probably helped my score.

Fixed up the thread some. Stupid ImageShack.

Considering something like Winds of Thunder for at least GG II. Thoughts? The tyranny of NEO NAPALM BOMB must be stopped, and GG II's weapon select makes this reasonable.

Interestingly, the title screen varies depending on which region of the Game Gear you are playing.

Same cart for all regions. Game Gear and Master System games don't do that as much as Mega Drive games do, but there are a few examples here and there.

Oddly, the ShotTriggers versions of GGA & GGA2 don't record score, but rather completion time. I'm not sure if it's because these are solved games, or excessively milkable ones.

Either way, I hit the GGA2 all clear in 22:34.17

Yeeeeaaaah that sounds about right. I suspected it, but I didn't want to believe it. I'd like for at least one Compile game to not be totally broken. I don't trust even Zanac Neo anymore.

Of course, noone ever seemed to care for other Compile games. I'm unhappy about it, but like with Super Aleste and such, I'm not really sure what to do about it. The times are interesting until you realize you're essentially speedrunning a forced-scrolling game that doesn't have caravan behavior. All the same, thanks for pointing that out. I don't have the Aleste collection at the moment.

I can't think of any massively milkable bosses, but then I haven't tested if they actually time out or not and each game has at least a few that are technically milkable in the sense they fire shootable projectiles. It's hard to tell what's worth it though because you can't see score in the first game except between levels I think? If even a single boss doesn't time out that can be milked, then yeah, theoretical counterstop right there.

Might as well record both score and time for both games I guess if possible, it should show score right before it goes to credits on the Switch collection.

I just noticed I have the higher score for GGA1 Special difficulty but I'm listed as second place.

Fixed and updated, sorry about that.

I think this is a weird enough case that I'm not sure about adding a field for time just yet, but I would ask that anyone playing Aleste Collection put their times down. If we start seeing counterstop after counterstop, those times would then become relevant.

Personally, I don't think we should even have threads for games like this, yet this was never a concern for Gun Nac or Super Aleste, which were pretty much always known to have very obvious issues.

Then why bother taking over the thread?

There's plenty of games with sillier scoring systems out there; having a scoreboard is not necessarily for the sake of competition but also just a place to discuss the game and post runs. Not every scoreboard necessarily needs to be hardcore competitive. :D

Well, is there a problem with what I said about the times? I don't see the point in having a field for times right now, but I don't mind adding it if people want it.

Still not sure what you're mad about exactly, but now that I can actually look at what Aleste Collection does, I thought I'd bump. M2 seems to believe that all four (not-GG Aleste 3) games in the collection have infinite patterns, so they all have timers. Now, I don't personally know whether any of them do, let alone all of them. However, the latter wouldn't surprise me even slightly, because we're talking about Compile here. Unfortunately, it sure does beg the question of when everything stops mattering anymore.

I'm not asking for hardcore competition, I'm just asking for basic competence, just games that put in the bare minimum effort to not be completely busted. I don't know why this was so hard for developers back then, because it's so often something as simple as adding boss timeouts or not awarding points for boss projectiles.

Which, by the way, is why M2 taking over the Aleste name is so great. Having actually played GG Aleste 3 myself, it's everything that it should be, far better than mere basic competence. M2 has already made at least one game (haven't played Senjin yet) that is so above and beyond nearly every other Compile game ever released, and they're about to release another. Anyone bothering to call themselves "shmup fans" in 2022 (fuck it) owe it to themselves to only look backwards with intelligence; to understand and respect Zanac Neo, but to leave Musha Aleste collecting dust, as things should be.

...Also, for some reason, using the native pause does not stop the timer, which is just silly. Come on.

This sounds extreme. Iam interested to see how I think about it after 1cc'ing GGAleste 3
