Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
I know some of you guys have programming / art / whatever skills. So my question is this: Why have none of you ripped off the design of Twinkle Star Sprites wholesale and made a fanservice pseudosequel? If I ever say I hate any of you, it's because you have not done this.

Cause I lack any artistic or programmatic talent to do so

Re: Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
I have played that one Touhou game
it was like Twinkle Star Sprites except bad and not good
I can get anyone I play with to immediately fall in love with TSS, if I had shown them Phantasmagoria I would have gotten an immediate "nope"
also I would love to play La Petite Princesse if I had any means of doing so

Neither does anyone. Just get the Next emulator and find a torrent/download of the PC-98 Touhou games.Special World wrote:I don't have a PC-98...

Coincidentally, I just introduced TSS to a friend yesterday, with favorable results.
Is La Petite Princesse a true sequel, or more of a 3D remaster with some changes?

It's a sequel, Ran is older and there're new characters.

Because the original concept isn't fun and lacks organicity.

They say playing as Chiyuri in PoDD lunatic in-particular makes the game go to another level (From what I've seen, it's quite a lot of fun, yeah). I sure can't wait to play PoDD, when I get some other things done.Kino wrote:Now go play the PC-98 Phantasmagoria. On lunatic.
On another note: That, and yeah, I should go play Twinkle Star Sprites, I've been wanting to play that, especially since playing PoFV. I'm planning on getting the La Petite Princesse one for the PS2 (I don't have a Sega Saturn, at the moment, so I guess I'll start with this one), and I guess I could brief everyone in on how that goes, when I do get the game, and play it.

First of all, bitching about a game because of it's graphics is stupid and shallow. Second of all, that is the single most idiotic description of a kind of music (or anything for that matter) I've ever seen in my life.

Re: Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
Complaining about graphics and music is very valid. A game is a harmony of video, audio, design and player feedback. Lacking in any department will hold something back.

Eh, I like the games but I'd be lying if I thought the backgrounds looked attractive, and the music is very over-rated IMO (I like some of it, but a lot of it is just boring to me).Lord Satori wrote:You just made an enemy out of every Touhou fan in existence.Kino wrote:fuck-ugly 3D backgrounds and boring Mariachi music
Not necessarily. It really depends on the person, and some people simply don't care at all. Many, many, many of the doujin games I've played do not appeal to me at all visually. Sure if they had the best character designs and art ever, it would be nice, but it would be more of a bonus than anything. Like wise, good music is a plus, but I could always just pop in my own custom soundtrack if I don't like the ost.trap15 wrote:Complaining about graphics and music is very valid. For me at least, when I play a shmup, the gameplay design is the deciding factor. Everything else is just a bonus that appeals to a different side of the brain, a side of the brain which is not what I am immediately here for and can get my kicks off for from somewhere else if needed.

Re: Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
Almost every Touhou song sounds like it was auto-composed by a program that randomly strings together various musical motifs with no rhyme or reason.
For better or worse, I never use custom soundtracks with games, because I prefer to experience each game as a self-contained entity that completely represents the effort and intent the creators put into it.

That sure explains why nobody likes those old school 3d games- oh wait...trap15 wrote:Complaining about graphics and music is very valid. A game is a harmony of video, audio, design and player feedback. Lacking in any department will hold something back.
Seriously though, I never said complaining about music wasn't valid, I just feel that he hasn't played any Touhou beyond 6, which has the most dated graphics of all of them. The whole mariachi thing has me completely dumbfounded and I have no idea what he's talking about, really. Maybe he's complaining about Zunpets, idk. If the music were as poor as he thinks it is, there probably wouldn't be as many Touhou music remix albums out there, would there? As for the graphics, they get better and better with each game. Also keep in mind that this is one guy doing this, and the only 3d portions are in the background of the game. I'm not saying it isn't important, I'm just saying that most of the time, it's enough to convey where you are.
If ANYTHING was holding these games back at all, it would be ZUN himself for not paying attention to the western market for so long and not having Mima return, not the background or the music.

Re: Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
I'm curious if we're even listening to the same thing. The music is absolutely the strongest point of almost all Touhou games. There were a few games where the music was pretty assy (looking at the early Windows games in particular here), but for the most part they're fantastic soundtracks.Pretas wrote:Almost every Touhou song sounds like it was auto-composed by a program that randomly strings together various musical motifs with no rhyme or reason.

Re: Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
There are definitely some tracks that appeal to me, and I like pretty much the entirety of EOSD and PCB's osts (after that the osts gradually started to become less even and memorable overall for me), but I don't think the music is anywhere near the entire library of magnum opus's that the fanbase makes it out to be.Pretas wrote:Almost every Touhou song sounds like it was auto-composed by a program that randomly strings together various musical motifs with no rhyme or reason.
Like I said, it varies from person to person. For me, things like gameplay, visual art, audio, story, etc. are all appealing to completely different sides of the brain, so when I go into an experience with the intention of experiencing one thing (maybe a good, competitive scoring system, or exhilarating patterns, or something like that) I find myself judging it almost entirely based on that.Pretas wrote: For better or worse, I never use custom soundtracks with games, because I prefer to experience each game as a self-contained entity that completely represents the effort and intent the creators put into it.
Like, if I was to evaluate shmups on a 1 to 10 scale, music audio or story would never add to or subtract from that score even a single point. There are other types of games where that harmony of elements might actually make a difference for me, but shmups definitely aren't one.
Sorry, I fixed.Pretas wrote:Don't you mean "not NESiCArily?"Squire Grooktook wrote:Not nessicarily. (sp)

It's perfectly fine to complain about graphics and music, but never ever disregard an entire game because of them. A game consists of a lot of things, but some things are considerably more critical than the others. What sets video games apart from other media? Game rules. Challenge. Feedback. Interactivity. Without these, a game instantly falls apart.trap15 wrote:Complaining about graphics and music is very valid. A game is a harmony of video, audio, design and player feedback. If somebody looked at Battle Garegga and went "who plays this 2D, outdated, bleepy boopy shit?" you'd want to tell them to fuck off. It's the same kind of logic secondaries like Mr. Kino likes to spout.

It kind of depends on the genre too. A survival horror game with shitty graphics and art would be a serious detriment. A visual novel or a story focused game with a shitty story would be a detriment. etc. etc.Formless God wrote:It's perfectly fine to complain about graphics and music, but never ever disregard an entire game because of them. Re: Why hasn't anybody made a new Twinkle Star Sprites
There's a thread about someone not having time to play a game... and you're asking someone (or some people) to make one
Doesn't matter how talented you are this would take a lot of time. Most likely you'd also be looking at some kind of group that would have to coordinate and agree to make a decent homage/spiritual successor - maybe no more than 2 or 3 people, but that's already x3 the amount of difficultly not only getting something off the ground, but also finishing it.
Making a bit of art, or a bit of music is a pretty big investment. Making a complete game is a huge undertaking, let alone to the scope/execution that would be required for this kind of game... After all what's the point? ... it's always easy to think 'I want more', answering what that 'more' should be is a difficult thing...
... if there's not a reason to motivate you to make/play it, why make it all, especially if the original still offers what anyone [from a limited crowd] would want from it?

Well, most survival horror games do have shitty graphics, and the ones that look pretty somehow didn't end up being that enjoyable. It's all in the gameplay.Squire Grooktook wrote:It kind of depends on the genre too. A survival horror game with shitty graphics and art would be a serious detriment. A visual novel needs a digestible story because it is just a novel, not a game. Attaching little notes saying "if you choose option A go to page X, otherwise go to page Y" in a novel doesn't suddenly turn it into a game.

The reason there's no new sequel is that it's unnecessary. TSS needs no fixes or additions and can still be as engaging competitively as it ever was.
