Loving Gran Turismo 4

Post by TWITCHDOCTOR »

I just got this game from a trade a few days ago. Man, I friggin love playing it. In fact, its hard to put the controller down!!
I borrowed it before the trade, to see if I liked it. I figured I would because I've been a fan of the previous ones.
Anyway, I haven't even touched my real car in about a week!
Sorry Chevelle!

Anyhow, any other GT4 fans around here. I realize that this discussion of the game might be old news, but the game is new to me,so...

Have fun, if you don't mind the huge selection of Skylines(50-something of them in the game.)

Yes, there are lots of Skylines, but I don't mind. In fact they're pretty cool in my book. A little overrated though is all...

I'm quite pleased with the variety of vehicles in the game.

I never did like those endurance races though, and I really don't think they belong in a video game...tedious and boring. At least in GT-3 (also Le Mans 24 Hours) you could save your position when in the pits, but can you save in 4? They don't really expect you to play for 24 hours...even with the B-Spec mode(auto pilot?) who wants to leave their console on for 24 hours straight!!??

Anways, I've always considered the endurance races more of an "extra" and I never really wen't beyond the game after that point. Although, I completed a few.

When you play the race in B-Spec, you can put it in 3X mode and the race will end in 8 hours instead of 24.

It's an okay game but I liked it better back when it was called GT 3.

Too technical for me. Have you tried it with one of that expensive Logitech wheel built for the game?

Nah...no steering wheels for me. I never thought they worked with a game well enough to warrent a purchase. Plus, most wheels have too much play in em. I'd rather use the original PS2 Dual Shock for racing anyday.
Also, steering wheel setups really suck, unless you have some place to mount them. Because balancing the wheel on your lap sucks really bad! Not to mention the floor unit with the pedals sliding around.
I have seen some impressive setups on the internet though...I just feel I'd play better with a controller.

Oh, I'm about 50% done with GT-4 now...damn its boring!!!!
The LONG assed endurances races have now officially killed the game for me.(as always) I can't even imagine 25 laps at Nurburgring (Germany), let alone "1000 Mile's"

No, I will not use B-Spec mode with x3 speed...that is not fun. (watching the game play itself...and there is no garuantee that your car will even win)
Watching Nascar on TV would be more fun, and I dislike Nascar racing.
Oh well, the first half of the game was enjoyable.

Since when did video game developers decide that it was "fun" to leave your console on all night long only to play itself?

Since GT4 got so damn boring that nobody "plays" it anymore so much as experiences it. That's the whole problem with the GT series, the devs got away from what makes something a game. That's okay though because the fanboys think that boring is a mark of authenticity when it comes to sims.

That's why I like Forza and the Toca series far more than GT4. Toca may have a crazy ass story attached to a sim but it's fun. Forza just focused on the race experience which should be the prime focus of any racing game.

I've got the 2nd gen Logitech Driving Force for GT3...

When Gran Turismo 3 finally came out in June 2002 (for the USA market), I was thinking about getting the original Logitech Racing Force Steering Wheel but decided to wait a little bit. Then in September of 2002, Logitech came out with the 2nd generation Logitech Driving Force Steering Wheel with a built-in PS2 D-pad + the usual PS2 game buttons layout which gave it a much better access to the game controls (and not having to reach down to get a Dual Shock 2 controller off to the side when playing with the behemoth that is the Driving Force Steering Wheel setup). I decided to buy the 2nd gen released model and was very happy with it...set me back at $100.00+ USD just for that setup alone. (It's cool to watch the Driving Force move by itself with it plugged in + using a Dual Shock controller at the same time during an PS2 racing session of Capcom's Auto Modellista game.) ^_~

As it turns out, I downloaded some Logitech PC drivers so it's possible to use a Logitech Racing/Driving Force & Driving Force Pro setup on a PC setup (without having to buy a PC version anyways). With the downloaded Logitech Momo Force utility app, it was fun trying out some the various demo force-feedback sensations that aren't avaible on the PS2 console platform. (Try the force-feedback sensation of driving a virtual vehicle over simulated ice...very cool effects, especially coming from a stock PS2 Driving Force steering wheel hooked up to a PC's USB port.)

I was thinking about upgrading to the Logitech PS2 Driving Force Pro steering wheel...just a few weeks ago, Logitech dropped the retail price of it from $149.99 USD to $129.99. Save $20 if you do buy one now. ^_~

I have the GT3 wheel(Driving Force), it works great with GT4.

I agree about the boring part in the game, but I just can't stand Forza. Mainly because the NSXs in GT4 looks a lot more realistic, plus GT4 has 1080i mode. :D

I've never really missed the 1080i mode mostly because it's fake and makes things all jaggerific. It's a nice extra to have but I'd rather the dev team take it all the way. It would be like a 60 fps version of forza with all the slowdown and graphical hickups. Sure it would be nice but why be half assed about it?

Thats just me I guess, but I would rather take a 60 fps and widescreen 480p supported version of Forza over the current one. I have been spoiled by the racing games in recent years, so it has to look good on my TV.(that means 480i just doesn't cut it.)

There are other reasons why I like GT4 more as well:

-More Hondas(I'm a Honda fan)
-More GT500/GT2 class race cars
-Most accurate Nurburgring Nordschleife in any video games.
-Hong Kong road track(I know even most GT4 fans hate this track a lot, but HK is my birthplace.)

Well, I know Forza offers more into the gameplay, gotta give Microsoft credit on this one. I'm looking forward to Forza 2.

PD has to work harder on the next GT as well, there're still a lot of rooms for improvements.

It might be heresy in the eyes of a few racing game fans but the Forza team made the Nurb in Forza that way on purpose. I read an interview somewhere where the Forza team said they made Forza's nurb a certain way for gameplay purposes. It makes sense because Forza's nurb is way more accurate with offtrack detail than GT4's version yet it curiously has wider lanes in some spots and other little stuff. It's almost like Forza's nurb has been purposely built for a better race between larger amounts of competitors.

I agree that PD really has to work harder on the next GT and get the hardcore racing fans excited about the GT series. I just don't think they will though because GT(beginning with GT3) is steadily becoming "madden-ized" and finding great success peddaling to the mainstream. Sales of GT4 were also way bigger than the sales of Forza and any other competing racing game on every other platform out there so where is the incentive for PD to change? The situation was even worse for racing games that share the same platform. Poor Enthusia....

That is one reason I got bored with the game. The only thing you can really do is forget about the long races and just screw around with the different cars. I had an idea that would make the photo mode more useful too: Pretend you're a car reviewer and write reviews and post pictures on some website for other GTers to check out. Just a thought.

Still, without its LONG tedious endurance races, GT-4 is still a good game nontheless. There's plenty of racing to do with all those cars...not to forget about the 'dealership/club" races
Like I said before, I mainly consider the endurance races to be somewhat of an "extra mode" anyway.

About Nurburgring...
I've never seen this track before, only untill I bought Project Goth 2 when it went down to $20.00
Anyway, whats up with all the grafitti(spelling) in the road? To me, its seems like some forgotten test track thats been vandalized, and now somehow came back from the dead. :?

The grafitti is actually there on the real life nurb.

I hope both PD and the Forza team lose their creativity so that RR will be back to being king of racers.

It's kinda fun to take a slow car and cruise around that track and read the graffti.

Nah, not OutRun 2. I'm afraid I simply don't have any interest at all in beating the clock on a linear road, as OutRun and many classic 2D racers were. I'm all about tracks, attaining fastest times (even though I don't like playing for score in shooters, go figure :?), making the perfect drift through sharp corners, and placing first ahead of better equipped cars. And that's what RR in particular excels in.

Are you talking about outrun 2 for the xbox? Because all that stuff is in outrun 2. Not disparaging your opinion or anything, because the RR series are great games, it just doesn't sound like we're talking about the same game.

I dunno. Is all that in OutRun 2? I've only played the arcade version (and only once at that) and it played exactly like the old OutRuns where you're basically racing on a long stretch of road without hairpin turns and racing against a clock. Does the Xbox version feature circuit tracks?

^ No, OutRun 2 is more or less a modern day version of the original OutRun from 1986.
Of course, the roads/areas are different. Its still your classic "checkpoint" racer.
Oh...and yea, its actually very good and lots of fun.
In this day and age, its great to sit down for a little while and play an arcade game with that instant rush feeling.

I suggest finding a Ferrari F355 Challenge cabinet. It is near perfect simulation for a circuit course time attack. Yu Suzuki + Sega...in fine form.

If you think Ridge Racer series is all that, maybe try Sega's Daytona USA 2 or Super GT/Scud Race...F-Zero AX/GX is great too.

Seems like a good time to mention that Sega Rally 2006 is only a few weeks away. First print run (or pre-orders only?) has a port of the original Sega Rally 1995 included. I'll be getting me some of that.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
