Is mobile light force worth it?

I'm taking about the translation and localization of the game. Should I get a Japanese version of gunbird or just stick with mobile light force?

Only if you have no other options available, as the lack of tate mode (which apparently also afflicts the JPS1 version of the game) and removal of all story elements do hamstring the experience considerably. The Saturn version is generally recommended first; the PS2 edition (which comes bundled with Gunbird 2) apparently has some flaws (I'd have to look around to see exactly what they are) but still tends to come next.

I'd say avoid it. The lack of tate is even more serious than it sounds, because the game only runs 4:3 with vertical scrolling to avoid using sidebars and it makes it almost totally unplayable.

Does the Japanese version on ps1 have the side bars?

I don't have it, but I'm guessing no, because the Japanese version of Strikers on PS1 also has the same issue if you aren't running it in tate. For Psykyo stuff it makes it more or less unplayable. You need to be able to see the entire screen at all times.

The North American Strikers 1945 (which is actually the second one) look like it runs in tate mode with the side bars right?

Sorry, I meant that the game is in it's original aspect ratio but the monitor is still 4:3.

The Agetech version of Strikers 1945 (aka Strikers 1945 II for the JPN PSX console from the likes of Psikyo themselves) does have two different yoko modes. However, Agetech did not include tate option whilst the orignal JPN PSX version of S-1945 II has the much desired tate option + the two aforemention yoko screen modes to choose from (makes quite a difference to turn the TV monitor on it's side).

Plus the all new CG FMV intro opening is a bonus + seperate FMV clips for all the various Strikers fightercrafts galore with narration is included in the JPN PSX version of S-1945 II (the original arcade PCB version of S-1945 II doesn't have any FMV whatsoever). The original S-1945 II arcade opening intro is there for completeness in the PSX version (the only stipulation is that it doesn't do a cycle of playing it and alternating with the various demo runs like how it is with the arcade PCB version). There's always Mame/Mame32 emulation to play it properly or go the Supergun/candy cab route and pick up a highly desired S-1945 II PCB (is the definitive version to play/own hands down). Of course with arcade PCB hobbyists, they'd rather play the PCB version compared to playing it emulated or on the gaming consoles (PSX/Saturn/PS2). Strikers 1945 II was re-released under the PSX Superlite 1500 series as well for JPN.

I'd say save up for the PS2 Gunbird pack because you kill two birds with one stone. If you already have a good version of Gunbird 2 (like on the DC), then go for the Saturn version to save a few dollars.

There's one problem, I don't have a Japanese ps2.

The prices for a second-hand JPN PS2 have come down to within the $100.00 to $125.00 USD monetary range and are easy on the wallet/purse these days. Any hard-core shmupper will have access to a modified PSX/PS2 and/or JPN PSX/PS2 to play 'em PSX/PS2 imports. The first two JPN PS2 console iterations released from the likes of SCEI never had a built-in HDD port to begin with but used a an external HDD/BBA setup side-by-side at best via a PCMCIA port. The 1st-gen NTSC U/C region PS2 console for the North American market did away with the PCMCIA slot port & had a built-in internal slot area for the HDD (+ piggybacking to the BBA as well) making it a hefty overall setup indeed (in terms of overall weight).

Yeah, I hate to say it, but eventually the Jap PS2 is going to be essential, assuming it is a financial option down the road. So you might want to think long-term and save up. Buying MLF 1 might just have the negative consequence that you come to dislike a pretty decent shooter.
