Psyvariar II - Ultimate Final

Post by ST Dragon »

I just had Psyvariar II - Ultimate Final (JPN) PS-2 (Brand new) delivered to me.

Basically I got it for the awesome front cover art, which I find amazing.
This is by far one my favourite box-covers, I love it! :)
But I can't play it since my PAL-PS-2 isn't modded yet. I have the older SCPH-50004 bulky model and I want to leave it unattached, so I'll be probably getting one of the "slim" models for the job.

I have played the DC version of Psyvariar II last year. Graphically it is on par with Ikaruga DC & the techno/rave soundtrack blew me away, but it's short (5 level) length kind of disappointed me.
On the back-cover it says "Special Capture DVD" but does the PS-2 version have anything new to offer?
Any new FMV cut-scenes, manga/anime art, new music tracks?

I'm also considering to leave the game unopened as it looks cool sealed up and don't want it to get scratched in time, so I'll probably get the ISO-Image instead. Is the manual or anything else special inside worth opening it up for?

Thanks in advance.

I hear there's a game inside. Really, just open it. There are 6 levels (or 7), but you can clear the first 5 stages and call it a 1cc if you want.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Thanks for the tip my good friend from Alaska.

By the way, it must be freezing up there at this time of the year... it was just 2 degrees above zero in Athens city this morning, so I can't even imagine the harsh winter you'll be receiving.

But that's nothing a hardened Giga Wing veteran can't handle.

The image gallery is quite lovely, and the Special Capture DVD will hypnotise you. The gallery on the bonus DVD is even cooler than the in-game one too, I could spend a long time just going through that. I was torn between the PS2 and DC versions, but I am glad I went with PS2.

I just got this as well. I've never played the game; it's interesting but there are some things that have me puzzled (can't read the manual). Do the shoulder buttons do the same thing as shaking back and forth (make you spin). Does this increase scratching?

I'm sure there's a faq out there, I just haven't looked yet. I like the music in this game.

BTW, it's trance, NOT techno.

Anyway, the PS2 version has quite a few short missions (like buzz for X seconds) for both ships that you can complete.

As for the cover art, I think it sucks frankly (esp. compared to the DC cover).

The shoulder buttons let you auto-spin, which does increase your scratching bonus, but not as much as you would spinning manually.

There is a close relation between Techno, Rave & Trance in general.
You're right though, it is not techno, that would be the music in the Mechanical stage in Apidya (Pure 90's Euro Techno), but what's the difference between Rave & Trance is a Shooter?

I would say that the 1st & 3rd tracks of Psyvariar II are Orchestral Rave, where as the rest are Trance, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Concerning the PS-2 & DC Covers.

I find the M.D.S. Maitreya Mech displayed on the DC cover to be a bit "bulky" & its stance isn’t as dark/sinister as the one shown on the official Success Wallpapers.
It almost looks as if it was created by another Western artist.

The PS-2 cover would have looked better only if they had used any of these 2 wallpapers as box-covers.
There are also some unofficial DC covers that look much better than the official DC box cover:

Anyway, I noticed that there is an Extended Edition of Psyvariar II on the X-Box, but other than X-Box Live, does it incorporate anything new?

Thanks in advance.

The Xbox version is, apparently, rubbish in comparison to the PS2 release and even inferior to the DC one. Muddy picture, an online replay function that doesn't work properly, no stage select.

Thanks, I wouldn't want to waste my hard earned money on it.

It allows you to save replays of your performance to the hard disk, so you can playback and study your mistakes later, or show off your favorite runs to your friends. It also contains a free gift inside, which IIRC is some kind of small collector's Psyvariar 2 display card/calendar. Although I'm not sure, there might also be less slowdown in some sections compared to the DC version.
