Was supposed to see "Guardians of the Galaxy" tonight, but didn't get there in time (it was filled up) so they graciously allowed us to see any other movie in the place at no charge.

We chose "Wish I Was Here", and we made a good choice if you want to laugh a good bit. It was quite funny in many places, and touching in others. By no means a perfect movie, but believe it or not: Kate Hudson was actually pretty good in it. Lots of the cast to like, though, and they do a good job. Lots of laughs to be had, in my opinion.

Had I paid full price for it, I'd have still been happy. That's saying something.

nah nothing different. I'm just afraid it'll become a collector's item again. last year before I bought the dvd boxset I wanted to try and get 'em all on blu-ray starting with the holy mountain. I found it for $30 on amazon, waited a couple of months, and when I went to go buy it... it was out of print and fetching $70+ on ebay.

it was harder to find than chungking express on blu ray and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to snag it again :O

Caddyshack
Why haven't i watched this before? Really funny comedy, the kid who later played Mozart in Amadeus is a cool protagonist, and Bill Murray is Bill Murray.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Another well done comedy with Bill Murray. I wished Owen Wilson acted more like in this movie, i loathe most of his acting in other comedies.

i liked the artists depiction of a hostile and alien planet (kind of expected girauds name to be attached it the project in some way)
but the animation is so goddamn horrible, it takes effort to watch the whole thing.

I don't know if you are referring to the Fatal Fury 45-minute OVA with Geese, but I thought it was so underwhelming. Sure, Geese laughed a lot, but there wasn't enough of Terry shouting GEESU and well, good fight scenes. Cheesy Manga UK dub though.

I know there are some longer FF movies, with different art styles, so I am not sure which ones are which anymore.

I concur. the animation style was too weird for me to deal with... "creepy" is the perfect word, actually. one of these days I'll have to give it another go. I was originally interested in seeing it because of Madlib (cats who know what I'm talking about know what I'm talking about).

sounds like you're referring to the first of the trilogy, which I believe is simply called 'Fatal Fury' (orange VHS box, if you can take it back that far!).
next is 'The New Battle' where Terry fights Wolfgang Krauser (yellow box).
'The Motion Picture' (blue) is the last; the antagonist is a guy bent on collecting various pieces of armor. good, but as was mentioned earlier, Geese and Krauser are more charismatic villains.

now that you mention it, there really weren't a lot of fight scenes in the first, but if you liked it even a little, you should see the other two as they definitely step it up. I wish they'd make another even tho I probably wouldn't recognize half of the newer characters.

just got the holy mountain blu-ray in the mail which I paid $15 for on amazon... which is strange because it was out of print and fetching a price between $70-100+ on ebay/amazon for the past 6+ months. oddly enough it was re-released on my bday (07/07).
Thanks a lot for this. I could never pick up the DVD Jodorovsky boxset in the past, and looked for a few Jodo blu-rays recently only to find they were ridiculously overpriced. Amazon.ca doesn't have The Holy Mountain BD, but I could grab a copy off ebay for 20$CAD shipped, an excellent deal thanks to you!

Noah.

I thought it was absolute garbage. I normally like Connoly, and I don't mind Watson too much, but the acting here was painful. I couldn't connect with their ordeal / pain, and all the conversations felt like the characters didn't even know what they were saying. A few nice hip-hop montages quite typical of Aronofsky (who I love as director btw), but too few and far between. I had to bridge the gap here and there for the "timeline", if you can call it that. I took it back to the video store and when the clerk asked how I had found it, I couldn't help but tell him it was crap, one of the worst movie I've watched this year. I came at this being very, very positive, being extremely fond of pretty much all the other offerings of Aronofsky.

The clerk game me a free rental for something else, which lead me to rent Lone Survivor, which I'll watch tonight. First time ever that I pseudo-complain (he asked for my input, right?) in a video store, but I had to say it!

Saw Lucy while I was on vacation. Despite the fact that the entire premise is based upon a scientific falsehood, it's actually a pretty decent film. It's a shame it's being eclipsed by that Guardians of the Galaxy movie Disney slapped a Marvel label on to get better ratings. (and it worked)

Aronofsky's first real turkey imo.

Yeah, there's the occasional old-school indy video store but those are fading quite fast in this day of age. In October of 2013, the very last local Blockbuster rental store (based out of Turlock, CA) closed their doors for good. Nowadays, it's mostly either Redbox or Blockbuster Express rental kiosks to get your DVD/Blu-Ray/video game rental(s) fix from -- this holds true in the USA.

Yes, that Lone Survivor flick was very well done. With some of the intense & gut-wrenching firefights that the crew is faced in, the odds are quite slim to none to make it out alive.

Checked out the latest CG anime flick of Appleseed Alpha (was released directly to DVD/Blu-Ray courtesy of Sony)...interesting side-story with the usual Appleseed characters all taking place in a vast post-war torn American wasteland. Be sure to stay for an extra key CG scene that plays after the staff credits scroll. Interestingly, a single copy of AA was available on one Redbox kiosk...snagged it to see what the hype/fuss was about.

We do, but they're diversifying to survive (and very few actually do survive). They sell video games, cellphones, t-shirts, posters, etc. Renting a movie (new release) costs the equivalent of 3.5 GPB. After 2-3 months, movies go to another section, and there it's 10$ for unlimited cinema (you can take how many you want, you return them when you want, etc), which is a way to fight Netflix. Netflix Canada is shit still, very little content compared to the US counterpart, but once it picks up more steam, renting a physical copy of a movie will be a thing of the past.

I confess I like to buy movies because I love owning physical copies... I have some sort of collection going. Last time I checked I had roughly 500 legit DVDs/Blu-rays that I bought over the years, and none of it is crap, really. I have problems putting everything on display these days, so I have a great number stored in a cupboard but keep my top 100 favourite movies of all-time in a special cabinet. A quarter of my collection are blu-rays; I did double-dip a few times but always gave the matching DVD to friends for their birthday. If it's worth double-dipping for, it means it's a great movie, so it makes for a great gift. Plus it legitimizes the buy - the g/f doesn't say: "Didn't we have a copy of this already?" "No, we don't!", gaving pre-emptively given the DVD to a friend.

Quite interesting fact, when you shop for blu-rays, you quickly realize that all the physical copies of movies that are on Netflix are dirt cheap. You often have rather recent movies for 4-5$ new. Sure thing, these are on Netflix Canada. The whole aisle would sometimes be discounted because the movies don't sell at all, understandably.

God I love movies.

Ended up picking up a copy of El Topo for the same 20$ shipped. Great timing, good times ahead!

Put the pipe down. They didn't "slap a Marvel label" on it. The original comics are almost 30 years old at this point and all of the characters date to the mid 70's, with Groot going back to 1960.

That awkward moment when your opinion is based on false info. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. You can always count on me to make a fool out of myself.

Either way, I still think it isn't consistent with the rest of Marvel's creations (or at least the popular ones), and that it's extremely overhyped.

I knew/know absolutely nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy and the first time I saw the preview for it, I thought it looked horrible and halfway expected it to be a joke. I've been surprised too by the hype/promo it's gotten. Then again, I haven't actually seen it to make a fair judgment ...but I also really don't intend to.

It's pretty fun. Probably one of the better marvel movies. Soooo much better than Avengers. I think this had the benefit of being its own world and story than shoehorning five uninteresting Marvel superheroes into one lame snooze fest. Not perfect, but one of better comic movies I've seen in a while.

Ah, I guess I'll go watch it. Someone needs to tell Hollywood that we know people use their whole brains these days so they can think of some other bullshit to say when they need super-mind powers in a film.

I'm actually hyped for GotG just because I'd never have expected Marvel to even think of these characters for a movie, and its been getting stupid-high ratings.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

My severe dislike for the Guardians of the Galaxy comics makes me not inclined to see the movie, but I might give it a go.

Actually, I haven't seen the second Cap & Thor movies yet either. Iron Man 3 was so crappy, I think it put me off Marvel Studios for a while.

Perhaps I am a bit harsh. I don't think it's terrible (just didn't interest me) but GotG feels a lot better executed and more tightly-paced imo. I think the main thing for me is that the Avengers is piggybacking off of half a dozen movies for its character development, and having only seen one of those prior to the movie made everything feel a bit in media res and not in the good way.

GotG has the virtue of starting and telling a complete story, and it has the luxury of introducing characters in a way that doesn't immediately necessitate fan service or callbacks like Avengers had to.

That's not to say there weren't problems (weak villain, sort of lame main character, a few grating pop-culture jokes and the 70s pop music stuff only SORTA fits), but for the most part I feel like things worked: the script was well-done, I liked the world[s] of the movie more than Earth (different exotic space locations with aliens who are just people with paint on, lol), and some and creative action set-pieces. I also never thought I'd be laughing at the comedic timing of Vin Deisel and a WWE wrestler!

Though I should say that this is very much a dumb fun blockbuster - though I would give it a few notches higher than movies like Edge of Tomorrow or Transformers. There's more care in this movie, even though it is essentially popcorn eye-candy.

Hm, sounds pretty good. I'll try to catch it.

You're right about Avengers calling back the previous movies, but in a way that mostly worked in its favour because they were so sub-par.

Does Iron Man really deserve so much hype? No. Isn't Downey Jr's neuroticism slightly irritating? Yes. Wasn't Thor one of the worst movies ever? Wasn't Captain America unfulfilling? The Hulk series fractured by multiple director and actor styles? Did anyone even watch the Samuel L Fury movie?

I'd say it was greater than the sum of its parts really.

I've said it before, but my favorite Marvel movies for pure entertainment are Raimi's Spiderman movies. They are just so damn goofy. They feel like cheesy Raimi movies with some melodrama tacked on to them to please the "i need a serious comic book movie" crowd.

As for Avengers, what might have soured my experience was the memory of sub-par Marvel movies. I readily admit that they got the characters to work together in a consistent and likable way - this is a credit to Joss Whedon's writing skills. Still didn't like it though. :P

Wreck it Ralph

Nah. Suffers from too much Disney.

The first 20 minutes are nice because that's where all the references are, as soon as it reaches Candy Land it begins to sink into classic Disney cliché. Irritating character expressions and really inane scripting full of name calling, it just doesn't have the adult-palatable intelligence of a Pixar screenplay. It spent 90% of the time in a crappy fictional racer losing much of its ties to real world gaming bar a superficial Mario Kart-esque track.

There were some neat ideas and nice tributes, but by the end they started to really play second fiddle to all the crap. Rhianna numbers? Really?

And the end credits were the best bit apart from fucking Owl City being the backing track.

Had potential and was mildly entertaining, but... Disney.

Maleficent was better.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Pretty good. The action is awesome and the back-and-forth between the two time periods is pretty cool. The plot is good enough as a way to serve up the action. As ever, the filmmakers have no clue what to do with the characters themselves and their interactions. More of the same boring pep-talks and debates re: 'to kill or not to kill.' The chats between Xavier & Magneto are again the only ones worth the screen time. Also as usual, the most interesting character is Magneto, mainly because his beliefs are actually complex and his wrath is really quite awesome.
The freaks are rising through the floor.
