I'm visiting New York for 5 days....give me some tips!

Post by mikehaggar »

Hey everybody,

Me and the lady are visiting New York for about 5 days. Already found a cool looking AirBNB in Brooklyn. So can anybody here recommend some cool stuff to do there? Food, music, sights, etc. Also, there will at least be a day that she is doing her own thing so if there's any cool video game stuff to see there, I'd love to hear about that too.

I've never been to the East Coast before so keep that in mind when you recommend stuff...

Thanks shmuppers!! :o

Whenever I visit NYC I'm most eager to hang around the museums - not sure if that's what you came for, but the big, obvious ones off the cuff are the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. If you're in Brooklyn anyways, the Brooklyn Museum is also good, though not as "focused" (which is both good and bad, depending on whether or not you're looking to see a specific type of exhibit). There are tons and tons of other ones large (MOMA, the Guggenheim, etc.) and small, so have a look around a brochure or online and you'll have more choices than you'll know what to do with. There are also several zoos (the Bronx Zoo being the largest IIRC) and also an aquarium (though I believe that one's under construction at the moment, someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Hope you have a good trip!

Definitely check out the Beer Authority, and Heartland Brewery by the Port Authority Bus Station.
Rudy's in Hell's Kitchen is good too; they give you unlimited hot dogs for free. Don't eat those, lol

There was also this one bar in Chelsea I went to once on my home from a shoot, but I can't remember the name.
They had two-for-on Brooklyn Lagers every tuesday.

And, of course, the Kidrobot outlet on Prince Street, if you like collectibles.

And please remember, there's nothing New Yorkers hate more than inconsiderate tourists:
Please walk on the right side of the sidewalk, and be expedient; Don't stand still on the sidewalk.

There is Barcade in Williamsburg and Two Bit at 153 Essex Street if you want brews and games.

8 Bit and Up and Video Games NY if you're looking to buy games.

Want something cool to do and totally free? Take the Staten Island Ferry if the weather is nice. It is a 25 minute ride through the harbor and goes right past the Statue of Liberty (waste of a day if you ask me). When you get to the Staten Island side you get back on and return to Manhattan.

Enjoy!
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

If it's your first time in New York, you gotta do some touristy stuff like visit Rockefeller Plaza and Central Park (there's a restaurant in Central Park that's pretty cool). New York pizza is a must!

Have a good trip!

The nintendo store and top of the rock are definitely worth checking out. Top of the rock is an awesome view of the city from the top of rockfeller center.

There's a new Barcade in Manhattan. The game selection holds more interest than the Brooklyn bar, to me. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989) & Daytona definitely stand out from the selection.

Boagman - The Staten Island ferry is in fact free! You can drink on it too.

Talic - Thanks for the info. I didn't know they had opened one on 24th. It is easier to get there than Williamsburg from where I live.

Do not pay beggers on trains.
There are a bunch of scams on the streets that ask for your money in exchange for a cd.
