Dang, that's a great first score. And on one of the wilder routes too. If you improve on that I'll have to start working on this game again.

Once I finish with Souky, I plan to go full on attacking RayForce and Darius Gaiden, myself. Stick with what you know, after all.

Now, it's cool that you decided to take on Electric Fan - I avoid that guy like the plague unless I have auto-fire. Were you powered down?

Thank you, I really should play again to optimize. I slipped up on Zone S, not capturing the mini boss and letting some enemies slip by on the bottom of the screen. I also didn't milk as much as I should have on some bosses, since I was mostly trying to go for the no miss clear.
EmperorIng wrote:Now, it's cool that you decided to take on Electric Fan - I avoid that guy like the plague unless I have auto-fire. Were you powered down?
I was fully powered up. I mostly just focused on killing him as fast as I could. He goes down in about 1 or 2 loops of his normal pattern if you do. It's funny but if you miss ONE red power up beforehand on this route, the length of the fight actually triples.

Darius Gaiden: or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying (about rank) and Love the Bomb:
Image

Emperor Ing - 3,476,010 - ABEINSY - No
[to replace my previous score, credited as E.C]

Basically, this started out as a for-fun run (having practiced Soukyogurentai this evening) where I wouldn't do any sort of bullshit to manipulate rank and just grab every power-up along my way.

What surprised me is that A) this worked, and B) I made it all the way to the last boss, not even dying until a mess-up on Deadly Crescent (whom I was not expecting) in Zone S.

A 1CC of this game might not be such a far-off prospect after all.

Despatche - 8,153,960 - ABEHLQV (ALL) - ShmupMAME v3.0b

This really should be 9M.

I'm curious about D; surely E is better? Also, I hate G.

I also don't entirely understand the rank jump involving max power. Rank jumps are only supposed to happen with each main level, but I was given the impression that you were supposed to take the second-to-last sublevel (options, big wave, missiles), because the very last sublevel gave all this health to bosses. However, I didn't notice anything when I took the last sublevel, other than waves never doing as much damage as missiles. Aside from that, sticking with the previous level doesn't seem to help much either, even though it's supposed to.

Speaking of which, Extra has a new weapon level. No idea how rank plays with this.

D is a safer level with an easier boss, but I think E gives more potential for scoring (ie more things to shoot).

It's been ages since I've played this game, but iirc rank is not such a big deal. The main reason to only power up to second-to-last level should be for scoring, because at the final level you lose the weapon's homing ability; homing is weaker, but it makes it a lot easier to capture one of the last captains and destroy Risk Storage's tail for big points.

Finally got the 1CC to this game, almost three years later!

Emperor Ing - 5,181,570 - ABDHLQV (ALL) - NO - Saturn

I wasn't expecting it, and I certainly wasn't expecting to beat Risk Storage on the three lives I had (and without the autofire cheat), but I basically bomb-spammed until it was dead, hoping for the best. :P

I usually lose a life in the ice stage (Zone Q), but I somehow managed not to stupidly collide to a wall this time around, even though I didn't grab the hidden 1-up in this stage.

Pop out the tuna sashimi and champagne

Nice job! The board should really be split between auto on and off, since it makes a world of difference IMO.

Not that I'd ever want to play it without auto. Too painful. ^^

Funny how there are a lot of scores using this same route. It seems to be well suited to a first Darius Gaiden 1CC.

It's funny I discovered that route by accident. Very late to the party.

It avoids a lot of the trickier bosses, like Fossil, Electric Fan, Crusty Hammer, etc. Risk Storage is comparatively easier as well.

Still, any progress is good progress, right?

It's a pretty difficult game even using the 'easy' route. I saw a guy at the arcade no miss a route I'd never seen before last week that ended with Curious Chandelier. It was gloriously brutal.

yeah you got hit by this thing:
Randorama wrote:Yes, it seems that on some bosses, if you meet some requirements, the scores for destroying single parts go crazy, like getting 95M on Folding Fan.I think that it's based on leaving some tentacles intact while revealing the inner parts of the boss, or something like that.I noticed a similar event on Prickly Angler-I once, wonder if it works on other bosses though.
it seems to be really really rare; i don't think anyone knows how it works beyond the above. i don't know if it's the "possible infinite score (bug)" issue mentioned in aiva (is it in arca?) all those years ago, though it might be.

I never knew that. Lol, that's pretty funny. Darius Gaiden has always been pretty laughable with its seemingly random score and rank. Nice clear though. =)

Another LQV all clear, though for me there's no way that H is a better choice than G. Facing Prickly Angler is infinitely preferable to facing Neon Light Illusion, it's just that the stage you've got to get through to reach him is a little bit harder. With ABDGLQV you basically don't have to face any hard bosses.

Really? I strongly prefer H. I mean Neon Light Illusion is hard sure, but if you bomb and do a riding point blank on him you kill him so fast it doesnt even matter. And there really aren't many other parts in the game that require the bombs.

Yeah, I find Neon Light Illusion to be pretty brutal to be honest, though I admit I hadn't tried point blanking him during bomb invincibility. I'll try H out again at some point but I'm definitely more likely to die on H than G.

I managed to 1CC it! It is the first Darius game I 1CC'ed, it feels good.
One-life'd until the last boss whose patterns I am not familiar with. Neon Light Illusion wasn't that hard thanks to bomb + point blanking as ACSeraph mentionned. I prefer facing this boss than having to go through zone G's numerous walls and walkers shooting and jumping from behind that always kill me. Maybe I'll have to learn it though, if I want to reach other end zones.
