Recommend me some games
I need to get myself some games for the upcoming winter break starting next week, and I can't think of anything that interests me. Here's how I like my games:
- Short length: 15 is good. I don't mind shorter as long as the game is great.
- Not long/too many cutscenes: RE4 great cutscening. Xenosaga, MGS many, long and boring.
- Difficult: hard but not in a cheap way. Easy games suck.
- Good story: as long as it doesn't interfere with gameplay.
- No backtracking (or as little as possible): backtracking ruins many a game that would've been great.
- Great bosses and levels: I hate games without a good many good bosses and levels.
- No wild camera: I get dizzy playing games with wobbly 3D cameras.
- Genre: action, action/adventure, platforming, light gunning, puzzle.
- Affordable: I'm cheap.
I have PS2, PS1 (import-able), Saturn (import-able), N64, DS, and GC.

Play God of War? Crisp graphics, great play control and combat system, not terribly long, well done cut scenes. It's easily in my top 5 US PS2 games. If you like an over-the-top, fast paced action beat-em up, give this one a try. Unfortunately it still goes for $50, but in my opinion it's worth it.
EDIT - also, there's about a hundred great games on the DS out, something for everyone

Och, you should never run out of great games to play with these 3. I could name like 20 grade AAA titles for each.I have PS2, PS1 (import-able), Saturn (import-able)
I'll just name the great Saturn games that should be under ten dollars. Power Drift, Sega Rally, Darius Gaiden, Vampire Saviour (not hunter, that's non ramcart, no good) Street Fighter Collection (again, absolute shit next to their CPSII counterparts, especially SSF2T, but still good) Donpachi if you get lucky, sega ages outrun, did I say vampire saviour, sega touring car championship is nice 'n hard. I'd say virtua fighter 2 or fighters megamix, but at this point everyone should have a copy of vf4 evo for ps2, quite possibly the best damn game in the universe.
edit: forgot layer section/galactic attack/rayforce/gunlock.
Enjoy.

You want to get Ys: Ark of Napishtim (PS2), Lost Kingdoms II (GC), Warioware: Touched! (DS), P.N.03 (GC), Alien Hominid (GC), Feel the Magic: XX/X (DS).
All are affordable, awesome games that are very accessable. Lost Kingdoms II and Ys especially are impressive since they have some sprawling areas but are really easy to jump into for half an hour, level up/get some new items while having a lot of fun, and then save and quit.
It's been discontinued, but there's a DS game called Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It's like a text adventure or an old Sierra adventure game almost but with beautiful 2D backdrops and character portraits. It's seriously a brilliant game and I try to recommend it to anyone that has a DS.

Holy crap, I'm am so on this. I have recently gotten GnG fever, though I've never even beaten stage 3 of Ghosts 'n Goblins without save states. !@#$%&&* red demons.Bloodreign wrote:How about Capcom Generations 2, with the 3 GnG titles on it, sure it's hard (don't know if you consider GnG too hard), but not cheap in difficulty.
Or any of the Cap Generation titles.
Or spend $20 and get Capcom Classics Collection on the PS2. It's got both arcade GnGs plus Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts as well as a host of other awesome games. It's basically the Capcom Generations disks all put together with a ton of extras.Tomtom wrote:Holy crap, I'm am so on this. Oh craps, forgot I got a DC in the closet.GaijinPunch wrote:Hmm....
No DC? I would try to find a cheap DC and get Jet Set Radio
Saturn:
Rayearth (not sure if the US version is cheap or not)
Keio Yuugekitai

Dracula X SOTN
I see some of you mentioned games I like quite a bit like YS: Ark of Napishtim and Parasite Eve. How is the emulation in the Capcom Classics Collection?
I'm planning to get God of War and Shadow of the Colossus after they get cheaper. I'm waiting for word on the special edition of DMC3.
How much does a Xbox go for these days? I've always wanted to play Ninja Gaiden and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

The emulation on Capcom Classics Collection PS2 is very good. The games seem to run at the right speed or close. There is no tate, but the games can be resized to touch the tops and bottom of the screen without overlapping (on the two TVs I tried it on anyway. I heard different from Kiken, so milage may vary depending on the TV). The music is very close, but not quite arcade exact for all games.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:Oh craps, forgot I got a DC in the closet.GaijinPunch wrote:Hmm....

I think the Xbox retails for 150 dollars by itself and about 180 dollars with Forza Motorsport. EB and Gamestop offer different "factory referbished bundles", but don't seem to be selling the core system non "factory referbished" anymore.
MDK2 for DC rocks. It's extremely hard and has some awesome bosses. I heard the PC one is better, but I feel the DC one controls fine and the game runs great on DC.
Phoenix Wright discontinued already? That game has only barely been out. There should be a rule not to discontinue games until they are at least three years old. At least I was able to get one for my sister for Christmas.
GaijinPunch, Jet Grind Radio is a rockin' game, but the game has some dizzying camera angles. The camera is the worst part of the game.

I definatly recommend about any game with the name Mr. Driller in it. Play Asia has Mr. Driller Ace for $29.99. http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-66- ... 0-q2b.html
Wario Ware 4 is short, but it has some inventive levels and is a blast to play. It aslo has some cool bosses. However, it does contain some backtracking and you do need to collect stuff to beat the game. Most of the stuff to collect isn't hard to find, though. (this is why I recemmended the Metroid and Castlevania at first and then deleted them. Actually, I removed Fusion becuase it has lots of cutsenes. Also, the US GBA Castlevanias are hard to find for cheap, though there are cheap Japanese re-releases (for like 25-30 dollars) and two of them will be available on one cart soon for $29.99).
I want to recommend Metal Slug Advance, but that game also has some backtracking. It has great action with little slowdown, but you need to backtrack and beat the levels without dying to get everything.
If you like classic collections, I definatly recommend Konami Arcade Advance. Very good ports of Time Pilot, Frogger, Rush 'n Attack, Gyruss, and Scramble.
For PSX, I recommend Xevious 3D + G. Lots of Xevious on one disc at a very affordable price. Megaman 8 also comes very recommended. A very fun Megaman game with a shmup stage and no backtracking. I heard the Saturn one is the best, but I'm not sure if it can be found for as cheap as the PSX or MMAC versions. I'm tempted to recommend Tomba 2, but the backtracking in that game is a beast.
As for N64, I recommend Goemon's Great Adventure. It does have some backtracking and talking to people in towns, but it's an excellent platform game with some cool bosses and can be found for cheap. It's also one of the only platform games on N64.

True dat, but for me, the soundtrack and uniqueness of the game more than makes up for it. The sad thing is, if they released JSRF on the PS2, we'd probably have another sequel by now. Instead, nothing.GaijinPunch, Jet Grind Radio is a rockin' game, but the game has some dizzying camera angles. The camera is the worst part of the game.

Great atmospheric story line, addictive non-stop action (especially the outdoor battles with the Mech & hover tanks) nice small cut scenes that don't interfere with the gameplay. Difficulty level is just right, but the best think about the game has to be its Boss fights. It features some of the coolest looking Bosses I've encountered in years.

Oh geez...I don't know what to recommend.
Do you have Devil May Cry? If you don't, it pretty much fits all your standards. I personally haven't gotten hooked on it yet, but I haven't played it enough.
Oh yeah, it's been out for a while so it's like...6 bucks now. I got it for 8.99 at my local Gamestop.

I have both and strangely enough I enjoy Hunter more. I prefer the backgrounds and music more and I find the characters slightly more balanced. The port of Savior, however, is technically stunning (and the load times are virtually nil once the game engine gets going). The Saturn port of Hunter is still quite good for a non ram-cart game - though not nearly as polished as Savior. If you are looking for the most technically sound, solid and silky-smooth port, Vampire Savior is the better of the two. Since I worry less about which is the better port and more about how much I enjoy the game, I find I play Vampire Hunter more often. These VS fighting games were seriously outshadowed by the Street Fighter series but deserve a look as they are excellent. I got a shrinkwrapped copy of VH for US$5 - it's one of the cheapest Saturn games out there considering how good the game is. Vampire Savior is a bit more - though still pretty cheap (and you will need either an official Capcom 4MB cart or the Action Replay 4M with modification - which is easy to do being a simple cut and jumper).Neon wrote:Vampire Saviour (not hunter, that's non ramcart, no good)

I picked up Shadow of the Colossus and was planning to get ahold of Capcom Classics Collection too. But alas, I couldn't find the latter the day I went out to pick 'em up. Shadow is good, not great as I was hearing people say just because it's not my cup of tea.

Bit of a mischaracterization of what I said - it's a good game, just don't get it on Saturn. The B-board shouldn't go for too much, and the PS2 compilation version I'm 100% sure is close enough to arcade perfect.llabnip wrote:I have both and strangely enough I enjoy Hunter more. Well... it's hard to beat US$5 for a new copy of Vampire Hunter. It's a great game on the Saturn - the 2nd best non-ramcart fighter IMO (Street Fighter Zero 2-dash is the best fighter on the system as far as I'm concerned - ramcart or not). I find that 100% arcade perfect is not worth troubling over in the slightest if a game is a clear winner in terms of gameplay, fun and atmosphere. If you can get the arcade setup for $5, then I guess that's the best route. Otherwise, I'd recommend Vampire Hunter on the Saturn as its an amazing game and save your money for more games... furthermore I'd recommend Hunter over Savior (though only minimally... and I'd suggest getting both eventually if you've got a Saturn).Neon wrote:Bit of a mischaracterization of what I said - it's a good game, just don't get it on Saturn.
