PS2 Busted IC legs

Post by ebeb »

I was attempting to solder wires for my Modbo chip onto the legs of the PS2's CXD3098Q chip. I applied too much pressure with the soldering iron, and the result was the caving in of 2 of the legs (and the bending of a third). They're now bent underneath the chip. Of course, I realized after I had done this that it was not necessary to solder directly onto the chip.

I've never repaired or replaced an IC before, so I wanted to get some input before I attempt to desolder the chip. I have no idea how I'd resolder it; the pins are so small.

(I also made a nasty solder bridge)

Thanks in advance for your advice; I really appreciate it!

If you're very lucky it might be salvageable if all the solder is cleaned up with a mixture of iron/flux/braid/desolder station. You could then use bent needles to hook and straighten out the pins.

If it needs replacing totally you need someone with a proper hot air rework station.

Probably going to be cheaper to just buy a new one and put it down to experience though....

Unless youre a master solderer i would just buy a new one.. that looks like a lot of work.

Nothing remotely substantial to add, but I was told PS2 is notorius in this regard. Either you ask an expert to do the job, or... I've yet to hear of anyone doing it right at their first attempt.

Alright, well after trying unsuccessfully to repair the chip for a while now, I'll just chalk it up to the price of being inexperienced.
I think I'll look for a PS2 that's being sold as broken/for parts, since everything except the mainboard is fine.

A question, though: are fat PS2 parts interchangable between versions? For instance, if I bought a V8 PS2 that has a disc drive that doesn't eject, or has a broken laser, would I be able to use my V10 disc drive with it?

I don't think so, but the place you'll most likely find an answer is the forum on this site:

http://psx-scene.com/

And you could always haggle with someone on Craigslist and get a decent PS2 for $15-$25.
