I suppose he indirectly affected it in the general news people received of his actions, but his destructive influence was a million times greater in Europe where he actually lived. The point being that Hilter is hardly "the worst thing to happen to America".

The US wanted into that war, so they vaporised the Japanese, whipped up a bullshit story and dived into the money machine. Actually, the Americans benefited so greatly from WWII you ended up owning most of the world in debt with the option to move in militarily. In those terms Hitler was one of the best things to happen to America. And IBM.

Thanks for the refresher on basic world history that everyone knows by, like, age 8. But whereas Germany unilaterally declared war on the US, and around 300,000 Americans (might be wrong in the figure, surprisingly hard to find datum) in the Atlantic theater didn't live to see the macroeconomic benefits of WWII, I think I was justified in the subject and wording of my (admittedly not very funny) one liner crafted to bring home how much I hate Miracle Whip.

They're educated that wartime production was what really ended the Great Depression, and further that the US emerged as a newly christened superpower. About the intricacies of prewar US-Japanese relations, and that Pearl Harbor wasn't quite so black-and-white, no not so much.

And you're failing to distinguish popular opinion and whatever FDR & friends were up to. At the outset of WWII, the popular opinion was very non-interventionist and strongly anti-Semitic, it took Pearl Harbor to get folks on board. (Not so much 8-year-old education, for obvious reasons, but basic middle/high school learning.)

I find it pretty amazingly hard to believe any US school would avoid WWII until high school. And if by some miracle (whip) it was skipped at an extremely shitty school (many of which do exist in the US), parents would inform. And, at least in my age group, most every American family had a member who at least participated in the war. By 5th grade (generally, age 10), we were discussing Vietnam, the prospect of the EU, and the history of the IRA. Pretty sure we discussed at minimum the basics of the Great Depression and WWII prior to that. Note that I was in a Catholic school, rather than public.

This is all pretty immaterial. We're moronically debating the minutia of my obviously correct off-the-cuff comments. The important thing is that what LS wrote, and what was quasi-defended by SK, was pretty stupid. Had I written that Hitler's impact was worse on America than, say, Jews or Poland, I'd expect a righteous backlash. But that's not what I wrote. This is all freaking idiotic.

You can see what the most common US grade school history and social studies texts are here, then check out the books and find out what they cover and what they don't. 5th grade textbooks like Reflections don't say anything about World War II. American Journey, which is part of the group that "aims for the eighth grade-level even though they are widely adopted and used in high school classrooms," reaches the war on page 718 and goes into such detail as...

I suggested he try to track down the dump it got sent to, but he says it happened 3 weeks ago and there apparently isn't a regular trash service contract, so he's not sure who took it.

$5K lost all at once makes any little problems I've had with buying low quality stuff...well, it sure puts things in perspective.
