I'm used to a clean slate and coding my way from scratch to a final product. If Unity wasn't so anti-coder, I might've actually had a prototype ready. If learning this stupid things takes TOO long, I'll go to Blitz3D. But I'll keep at Unity for a bit longer, because it's more advanced;Blitz3D uses D3D7, so you can make some PS2-era graphics, but they'll look old.

We still have until Aug. 30th though. That's more of a handicap for YOU though, than it is for me. ;)

Was done in Unity 3 in the space of an evening, before we even had all the 2d stuff.

If you're looking to do a rapid prototype, Unity is the dogs bollocks. Just make a thread and ask if you need help :)

It's a dog's poop, if you ask me. Any engine is suitable for prototyping if you made at least one game with it before, because then you probably have a bunch of helper classes and decent foundation already as a starting point.

You bet! I love friendly competition. And it's to make a shmup. Even if you're not serious, it'd still be cool to sort of develop and see who's got the better shmup-making skills. :D

Ok thanks! But n0rty, you actually did all that in Unity? It looks great compared to your 360 version! I can't wait to play it if you release it.

For me, getting through the actual workflow was a pain(learning all the buttons/tabs/windows). Scripting in Unity is easy for me as it's basically programming in MVC# 2008.

Don't get me wrong, I love Unity's features! It takes care of a lot of the mundane stuff so you can concentrate on making the game. But the IDE forces you to learn a great deal to get started. I'm going through the walkerboys tutorials, they're really great at explaining Unity. So I'm sticking with Unity for serious 3D work.

If I wanna rapid prototype though, I'm sticking to Blitz3D. Takes out all the crazy base 3D work like Unity, but it stays out of the programmer's way otherwise with its awesome entity system. So making a decent 3D game would take hours, not days. It's pretty outdated in the graphics department, but IMHO nothing beats Blitz3D when it comes to testing different 3D ideas from scratch in minutes. :)

lol no, long since abandoned. I'm working on a much better game at the moment. That was just a proof of concept if anything. It's not that good anyway.

Yes, it's pretty bad, but still a bit better than Invaders on steroids.

n0rty, that is disappointing! I loved the visual effects/flexibility of the engine.

Yeah yeah CoderGames, laugh all you want. But I never made any false promises on my game! It does exactly what it says on the tin. Blast 'em all gameplay, varied powerups, particles and tons of bullets. Like Space Invaders, but better in almost every way. Not saying much though, since SI was first released in '78 where the developer had to make his own hardware for the game.

Personally, if the entire shmups community here(including you and me) had to play either VR: Vicious Reality, or Invader Attack 2 for their entire lives and they couldn't opt out, it makes me feel better to think that they'd pick my game. lol

But that doesn't mean I can't make a much better shmup! VR is getting a huge update in the gameplay, and of course I'm making a brand new shmup from scratch, which takes all the feedback I've gotten and I'm taking more notes from JP shmups like DoDonPachi just to be sure.

Man as much as I like when developers actually develop, you sir are one cocky ego-boosted asshole at times, claiming your work as masterpiece, real devs don't claim their games as masterpieces, they defend themselves. Even if it's jokes and giggles, it makes you look bad (immature humor does, not overall jokes), seriously, no wonder people don't browse dev forums like they used to.

Glad you figured out on your own that I was joking. Phew, I started to worry about gamers in general, they're losing more and more of reasoning and take everything too seriously. I blame it on FPS, as those really cause PTSD.

EDIT: wait a minute, you're not a gamer, I just noticed. Are you trying to blame me because gamers are not visiting forums more often? Seriously or joking? If you're joking, it's not funny as you should know that gamers spend less time on forums in general because they're playing more. There are much more games these days than ever before and the gaming industry is at its peak.

Oh shut up. If you think your a game is so special, i am sorry its not. its an invaders clone with fancy shaders and half-arsed gameplay.
The people mentioned in my sig "Rozyrg" and "Giest118", are far better devs, and people, with humility and have made far better games, with out one single pixel shader or 3d model.

I advise you to be more respectful to feedback and more humble in general. Dont piss people off. Pissed off people arent nice.

Let me take a wild guess ... you're also a developer? There are developers who were impressed with IA2, I value their opinions over opinions of others who were not. That's my prerogative and you cannot tell me what I should or shouldn't do. You just take care of your own opinions and DOs and DONTs. I never told you how you should be so stop being an a-hole.

Genuine question here. How old are you? Because you're acting like a child. If you actually are a child, then that's okay. After all, a child could probably make more fun games than you. But if you aren't, well, that's just sad. Really, really sad.

Also, it's idiotic to value the opinion of those who praise you over those who don't. You're just being blind to genuine criticism. No game is perfect after all.

Are you serious? Are you genuinely serious?

Nobody is jealous. Feedback is harsh, gamers are horrible heartless individuals but I'm sorry - we've all been through it whether it's on our hobby stuff or as part of full time work. What makes you so special that you are somehow exempt from honest feedback?

We're a very tightly knit community. Almost every developer at some point goes full retard and I think that's perfectly normal. You want to make the game that everyone will talk about. You want to make the best fucking game ever and you'll believe you are doing so. But sooner or later you need to snap out of it and embrace the hard thud of hitting solid ground again.

However if you're going to do that, you need to start listening to your players. Not everyone is going to think like you. Not everyone is going to spend their time uncovering all the little secrets and special techniques in your game for getting a high score. You might ask why...

Because a game trying to capture the arcade spirit doesn't come flying out of the gate with the player holding on for dear life with a retarded grin on their face - people are going to think it sucks and play something better. If people think it sucks, they wont invest time in your game. It doesn't matter if you've got the most genius progression, or the worlds most complicated puzzle. People won't play it if it's boring as shit.

Your first step is having a game that makes the player look at the screen and go:

Then when your player picks up the controller and starts playing, within the first 30 seconds you want them to go:

Your player will probably die and their fun will be stopped abruptly! So then your player does this:

BUT... the player needs to understand why they died so that they can become this:

I'm telling you that gamers love my game, and some of developers too. But regardless of that, I know how to recognize jealousy from honest constructive criticism. I'm willing to accept any criticisms, honest or not, from developers, if they made something of similar quality. And I'm open to any criticisms, honest or not, from players. But, players are not stupid, they know that one game cannot be liked by all gamers. The game gradually finds its way to players who are interested in playing it. It may take some time, but it does happen eventually. I went through different phases during my life as a gamer so far, shifting from one genre to another. Now I can't stand RTS games, they're just annoying to me, and I was a core fan of Starcraft and Warcraft.

I'm glad you wasted your time reading what I wrote on IndieDB, but I stopped reading your crap as you're boring as shit.

Yeah stop saying bullshit and show some proof, REAL proof, not just "OH HEY I THINK GAYMERZ LOVE MY GAMES". Well, the game will automatically bring up the high score table when you game over. It'll even take itself out of full screen and pop up a browser - because as PC gamers we all fucking want that right? That's not even slightly annoying. No sir.

Well, they're too busy playing the game not posting or attending forums, I presume. I assume they do not know about this website and its forum, so don't expect any posts here. But, who could blame them, as they probably visited this forum during past years just to realize there's a bunch of annoying forum bullies and stopped visiting. You drove them away, shame on you.

You cannot post hiscore and achievements if it's not a full version of the game, that's one of limitations of the demo. Few kids contacted me saying they like the game, but don't have the money. They missed few days of discount I guess. There's no reason to rush anything, like I said, once they convince their parents to purchase the game we could see more hiscores. Until then, nothing will be happening over there. And there's also a limitation of how many scores there can be displayed, so all below the line will be rejected as well.
