Anybody else listening to Dirty Loops?

Been listening to these guys (mostly the same few covers until recently) for a year or two. Oustanding players. It's like if the modern pop music sound had musicianship added to it. Will probably never get popular here in the states, curious how well known they are in other parts of the world. Imagine they'll have a good audience in Japan and Europe.

I love these guys. Can't wait until they release an album. I'm not sure if you've heard it, but they've apparently recorded some tracks with the Jerry Hey Horns. Here's the outro from one of them:

You crossed my mind while I was posting this. I posted "The Way She Walks" as a link, the Japanese album dropped a month or two ago. There's a full album stream on YT for now anyway. Not sure that the 13th and 14th track on the previous release will be on the American release, it'd be unfortunate if they weren't. The US release doesn't come out until August, not sure why it takes another 4 months.. I'm guessing it has more to do with promotion than anything else. Weird to hear something that sounds like this on the Verve label.

Probably a typical representation of what the general student listens to and wants to do. Either that or free form a'la Brötzmann, Gustafsson.

Super competent but the slickness becomes a bit too slippery for repeated listens to me.

Interesting info. This was the type of feedback I was hoping for. Googled the other stuff you listed, a bit too free for my liking. I just can't make out any cohesion whatsoever. I don't mind when solos get atonal, but when there's absolutely no structure for the entirety of a performance I just can't enjoy it.

The Professional Musicians Programme (which is the one these guys and i took) is pretty much split into two major camps when it comes to so called "afro-based" music.
One strives for the whole super tight, slick, technically perfect playing that you can see demonstrated in Dirty Loops and 80s fusion style music (like TOTO, Airplay etc.) while the other is oriented more towards stuff like what i mentioned before. "Artsier" music if you will.

If you'd like something that is not as far out (even though it's... Outward Bound...) as the modern stuff i recommend you check out Eric Dolphy.

Yeah, I don't think the album is outstanding, just the musicianship really. "The Way She Walks" is probably my favorite and there are four or five others that I like, the album's not very cohesive either, feels more like a compilation of songs than a solid album.

Oh man, now I have a partial understanding of why Snarky Puppy is so awesome. I glanced at their wiki page and the first thing I noticed was that their origin was Denton, Texas. I'm going to automatically conclude that at least some of the founders went to North Texas. I remember some of my favorite charts I played in college were by Neil Slater, the leader of NT's premier band at the time.
