Street Fighter 2 The World Warrior Issue

Post by retrogamingjohnny »

Hey guys how's it going? I got a Street Fighter 2 The World Warrior from Ebay recently. The seller described the board as working properly with sound and image. Here is a photo of the board

Here is the problem: Upon start up, the texts' color is normal then turn white quickly. The intro scene also turns very bright. On the atract mode, the big character portraits are completely white and the small portraits are invisible. After the characters are selected, the airplane moves very slowly and the game is stuck. The same thing happens when I start a normal game and select a character. The game never go past the select screen.
Here is a video I recorded

I retested all my other pcbs including my Neo Geo MVS and they all work fine. I even tested the game with my other power supply (ATX), rechecked the voltages, but the problem is still the same.
Has anyone seen this before? Any idea what the problem is? I'd appreciate any help.

Well if the game is reading a bit above 5V when running, I guess the next thing to check would be to make sure that all the boards are firmly connected to each other (especially the C-board, the small one on top, since I'd think that one is the most likely to come loose in shipment).

I found the problem! upon close inspection I discovered that one of the little... I am not sure what they are, broke off most likely during shipment, on one side, so I held it down and turned on the power and it works fine. No more graphics errors, all the portraits are visible and the attract mode goes perfectly. Next I guess I will try to reattach it with some solder.

That's good. Perhaps post a clearer photo of the part at issue so if someone else has a similar problem in the future they can see a possible solution.

Ok here are some clear images. I circled in red the piece that has one of the leads broken (left side)

That FB part is a ferrite bead/filter. You can desolder the other side, and use a bit of wire to jumper the two solder points together.
As the part is already broken, you can also just cut it off, to avoid (de)soldering damage to the pcb.

Add a wire link between the two points, then check again and let us know how it turned out.

Thanks for identifying that. I did the simplest thing possible, which is
simply putting some solder between the broken leads.

It hasn't given me any issues, although I'm not very pleased with the way it looks,
having one side higher than the other and looking nonuniform with the rest.
I thought about de soldering it then rejoining the broken leads then solder it back,
but I don't want to ruin the machine precise soldering on the back.

Just get a new one (or reclaim one from another broken Capcom game) and fit it.

Yes, you can jumper it instead of fitting a new ferrite bead but then you will loose its function which is mean to attenuate the EMI interferences at high frequency.
