psikyo games increase rank with power ups, and the higher the rank the faster and more complex the bullet patterns. you can check this out by powering up like mad and then powering down on random enemies during bosses. you can actually see the bullets slow down
it always amuses me.
i love psikyo games, probably my favourite shmup developers actually. i think gunbird is probably my favourite as i've put a lot of time into it. it would probably be my favourite ever game if it wasn't for the fact that i can't beat statge 6 boss, even if i get there with full lives. i've now got to the point where it is almost impossible mentally as i can't help but foretell my own doom as the shape thing turns into the dragon....
i also love the strikers games, probably 2 the most, as i've played a lot of them, but i don't dislike any that i've played. dragon blaze seems good but far too hard at the mo, and i haven't really put any time into it.
i love psikyo

It has to do with how long you've been alive and how powered up you are. You'll typically notice a significant rank increase once you reach stage five or six on one life.professor ganson wrote:How does it work, exactly? Is it just this: the amount of enemy fire is a function of how much you are powered up?cigsthecat wrote: Rank behaves exactly the same as their other games.

I've changed my mind since I started this thread: I now like Dragon Blaze better than Gunbird 2, though both are still in my top 5 favorites.
Dragon Blaze offers more scoring opportunities than GB 2, and it is aesthetically superior-- one of the best ever imo. One small complaint: I think that GB 2 does a better job of creating diversity within each level. Yes, DB will throw different enemies at you along the way, but each level in GB 2 really divides up nicely into distinguishable sections, with different looks and tempo.

My Favorite Psikyo shmups is Gunbird 2, just cann't resist any cute'm up...
The only problem is whenever Marion saw a black cat, she just toss it around like BomBom (her rabbit)... So it is dangerous for me to get close.
I think we should really start a poll on which is the Best/Favorite Psikyo shmups.

favorite - Zero Gunner 2 - i just love it, it is so playable (in a sometimes disorienting kind of way
). speaking of which, i think its time to dig up my dreamcast.
runners up - Gunbird 2 > Dragon Blaze > Strikers II > Strikers
not sure where the others would fit in on that list, haven't spent enough time with them to tell
but Sol Divide does bite.

Zero Gunner 2 is my favorite.
But the problem is that I really hate Psikyo games becasue they are just too damn cheap. Plus the first four levels are in different order (so you don't get tired over the same thing, but the problem for me is that I can't study the bullet patterns that well because the stages are always different!).

My favorite is probably S1945II, but I was really impressed with S1945III, I love Zero Gunner 2, Gunbird 2 is great, and Dragon Blaze just kills. I like Space Bomber (it's wacky and fun), and I even like Sol Divide (many dislike it). I really wish I could try the first Zero Gunner out, though...
i like the strikers games best - although too much psikyo leads me to start thinking they are all too similar - dragon blaze in particular offers nothing much new over gunbird 2 for instance. have psikyo stopped developing shmups now? maybe they are out of ideas. cave games kick their arses in terms of originality and game mechanics.
Really into Strikers 1999 now. I think I'll try to head over to the arcades every Saturday whenever possible to play it. TB-ing is so fun. Spend a few bucks today practicing TB-ing.
The damn extend is set to 800,000. Strikers 1999's levels seem to be so much easier compared to GB2, DB, or Strikers 1945 Plus. Mission five especially.
Marion > X-36.
I like every Psikyo shooter except for Sol Divide.

1945 Strikers Plus on the NEOGEO is one of my favourites.
Primarily because of the better Boss music when compared to the other strikers. Also the Fiat plane with the vertical beams (When you hold down the fire button & then release) is so cool.

Well, at least I'm not the forum's pimp / informer.
