It's also possible with an AR Max disc.

And I think some users on the PSX-Scene forums will let you ship a card to them and they'll install FMCB on it.

Yeah, but so would the romeo mod. Nobody who installs modchips doesn't do the romeo mod.Xan wrote:So you mean games burned with ESR will counteract that laser burnout thing? Thinking about it, I do recall reading that ESR causes those discs to be actually read as video DVDs by the PS2...

Re: Thinking about getting a PSX console...
romeo mod isn't enough for slims, most modchips will eventually crash a slim's mechacon if you aren't using the final revision of the slim ps2. there's a diode fix, and a PIC fix which shuts down the ps2 if the mechacon crashes. without at least one of those the laser will fry, becase a mechacon crash causes it to just keep upping power to the coils.
Some slims even have mechacon crashes if they are NOT chipped. but in this case sony would fix it.
swap magic coder can run FMCB installer from usb, and you don't even need to mess with flip top switch mods.
if FMCB won't work, then chipping the ps2 is a good idea, because those ones have the traps removed.
If you have a fat ps2 then definitely use free mc boot and install original imports to the hard drive over the network or with an ide to usb adapter and winhiip or hdl_dumb.
