Capcom is up for sale

Post by Pretas »

http://www.gengame.net/2014/06/capcom-s ... -purchase/

Would require a huge investment on the part of any interested corporation, but my money is on Bandai-Namco acquiring them sometime within the next couple of years. Capcom's portfolio would complement their own particularly well, more so than with any other publisher. Between Namco X Capcom, SFxT and Project X Zone, there's already a strong precedent for it happening. It would also likely ensure that TxSF finally gets made.

Capcom are useless anyway. They have taken their good IP's in the wrong direction. The new ones just suck.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I didn't follow the news in regards to Capcom very closely but didn't they used the money from Monster Hunter 4 to build a mobile studio? How are they doing in this sector?

They still have Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Ace Attorney and Street Fighter. It's not like the didn't try new IPs: Dead Rising, Lost Planet (+EX Troopers), Dark Void, DmC Reboot but with varying results.

I wonder if some Chinese mobile/ browser games publisher would bite. I doubt Nintendo has much interest in them aside from MonHun. I mean their IPs are strong but not strong enough to rescue a platform. Just look at the Gamecube and the Capcom Five.

But they have Megaman as well, don't they?

Megaman? I thought megaman was something they use to piss off their fanbase to no end. Not a megaman fan myself but to pull the plug on a game and then blame the fanbase seems really idiotic to me.

I heard it was a bitch of a company to work for (the JP side of things)

Resident Evil is ailing as a franchise. Capcom blew a tremendous amount of cash and good will on RE6, the biggest project in the company's history. It failed to match their projected CoD sales numbers, and turning a main numbered entry of the series into a straight TPS with few to no pretensions of survival horror caused many fans to lose most of their faith in RE. I still feel that it was a solid game with stellar combat mechanics (though often intruded upon by aggressive scripting and QTEs) under all the anti-hype, and considerably better than RE5. The quality shines through particularly well in Mercenaries.

It's too bad they didn't do more with Dragon's Dogma. The game is a long ways from perfect, but it has a lot of potential for much refined/improved sequel.

Street Fighter 4 may not be well respected on this board, but it has done well and maintained a strong fan base.

The thing I absolutely don't get is why they never moved their Monster Hunter franchise to PS3/360? Seems like they could have just started printing money at this point, but no.

They ported MH Frontier to 360 due to a deal with Microsoft Japan, and it later came to PS3/Wii U. I think it largely caters to an entirely different audience than the numbered MH games due to being a MMO, though.

MH Portable 3rd also had an HD port on PS3.

Capcom's big talent bailed already, and they give their IPs the same level of respect and competence that Sega gives Sonic. Monster Hunter is the only thing they're still capable of making well. Capcom getting bought by someone who knows the true value of their library would be a dream come true.
It's not like the didn't try new IPs: Dead Rising, Lost Planet (+EX Troopers), Dark Void, DmC Reboot but with varying results.
Lost Planet and Dead Rising were both great until they ruined them with sequels like they do everything else. DmC is the physical incarnation of Capcom's ability to shit on great IPs with godawful sequels.

I actually preferred the last DMC over any of the previous. They let Clover and Mikami go, it's been a slippery slope since, although in saying that - Dead Rising is the game of the last gen, for me.

Capcom went through a golden age in the 00's. Games like Phoenix Wright and Killer 7 gave the company a rare prestige. They haven't taken a risk in years.

Mid 90s - early 00s Sega was in top form [in terms of games, not actual corporate management  ]. 1994-2003.

also, I could easily see Bamco eating Capcom, at least if they decided to put up the dosh to do so
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

So, yet another classic game developer bites the dust.

I'm not sure if I should look forward to the new blood that will arise from the ashes, or fear it.

No need to look too far for them. Nishitani, Mikami, Kamiya, Inaba and others jumped ship and already have been making the games Crapcom wouldn't allow them to.

Capcom has some of the best IPs in gaming. I doubt it's going to go for cheap. This is Nintendo's chance to really expand its user base. I think they'll handle megaman right.

If that were to pass, some justice would be done in videogamedom. I can't think of any other developer who could bring hope back to those IP's - the likes of Bamco would just further the bullshit big budget interactive movie approach. Capcom's ailing series require some back to basics and creative ingenuity and they could flourish again.

Nintendo isn't going to buy them, and it would be a huge disservice to everyone for all future Capcom games to be held back to last-gen standards. It would also eliminate their ability to release games for PC, and create major problems for the fighting game community.

"Held back to last-gen standards."

Like current gen standards aren't exactly the same.

It would improve those IP's and give them a fighting chance at life, while IP's other than the in-house favourites are exactly what Nintendo needs. It's a perfect marriage.

Taking Capcom games further in the RE6 direction won't get anyone anywhere.

In this sense, IPs are money-making machines for the lazy. I'm more interested in following new talent and ideas, not "OH LOOK HERE'S A CHUN LI, SQUEE" or whatever
