Dan! Da! Dan!

Post by Reiki »

Omega (they did Every Extend) have released their new game, a block destroying, caravan SHMUP called Dan! Da! Dan! Very colourful and it plays nicely enough, you have 3 minutes to score as much as you can, though as in Every Extend you can increase your time.

A fun little game! I really liked Every Extend, nice to see them still creating little gems.

Great find, it's a blast to play.

Initial observations for those who can't decipher what's going on. Not all information guaranteed to be entirely accurate - it's only from experience, I can't read Japanese.

tap Z for main shot
hold Z to charge up circle shot (name?) Up to 2 circle shots on screen at the same time.
press X to use hyper when obtain

The circle shot deals continuous damage and slows/repels bullets.
Destroy large numbers blocks to make the screen scroll faster.
Hypers build by collecting yellow-red triangles, and also builds up slowly with time. Initiating hyper turns bullets into bluish triangles when used, and allows the firing of a limited amount of much stronger, plus spread shots. (A limited amount of shots, not limited amount of time) The more blocks destroyed during 1 use of hyper, the more points.
If you destroy a large percentage of blocks, then later blocks are likely to be more dangerous (containing 8-way shots or 2-aimed shots).

Blocks with red circles destroy all other blocks of the same colour when destroyed. Blocks with ? marks contain +10 time.

I think Omega is a company to watch out for. Every Extend is a very clever and original game and this game is excellent from what I played so far.

Oh yeah, and blocks have different hp values depending on how they look. It's hard to describe which is which, but it'll become obvious with time. Destroying a block will destroy all those of the same colour which are adjacent, recursively. Save your hyper shots for blocks which are weak and are connected to lots of blocks of the same colour, or for blocks with the red circle.

I can score 300k right now, but that's probably just the surface of the game - I run out of time in the rushing unbreakable brick corridor.

I don't get the feeling they're a company, though hard to tell since I don't read Japanese. I thought this and Every Extend were simply free games, much like ABA games are.

Anyone know if they're looking at doing more?

Um, is anyone else having trouble closing the game from fullscreen mode? I have no problems with windowed mode, but when I try and close it after playing fullscreen, my PC locks up and I'm forced to restart...

I don't know what else to call them. All I know is that they make free games and do a fine job at it. I thought of ABA games as a company too, though their games are also free. Maybe I should just call them game makers?

Funny name. Makes me think "Who da man?" 'Dan! Da! Dan!" :P

How do these guys stay in business? What other products do they make? Just random curiosity.

Anyways, I'm trying to find where to download it now.

And has anyone played this, Maranuge? Looks very cool:

Hmmm... yes, I know what you're saying. I myself intend to release some games, likely for free (who would pay? :) ) and like ABA or Omega, I'll do it under cover of a brand or name. I think it's a good thing actually, as I would certainly buy something from them in the future given I know their "reputation" and I've enjoyed the free stuff.

Awesome! Just played it and it is a very tight little game. The graphics and sound have a slick, low-high tech look to 'em and an upbeat feel overall. I'm gonna bring my MS USB sidewinder to work tomorrow, this will be a great way to pass time between calls (since I am now finally tired of the Bobomb slingshot and other minigames in Mario 64 DS :P )

EDIT: The CR2032 battery "medals" are a nice touch. :P

I should add, what use do the triangles have? I'm not clear on that at all.

And the blue triangles are score only.

I didn't check out this thread because by the title i just figured you were screaming nonsense. but this game is great! but man it's hard. i can't get past that part after the 3rd boss.

i didnt know that the hyper mode limited you on shots! i always shot as fast as i could figuring it was just time based. good thing i read that post!

I'd be playing this now, except I get some lame video problem. All the colors are ultra saturated, so everything looks like different shades of dirty white. I gather that bullets are plain white and that I can't see them very well. Too bad.

It would be sweet if Mizaguchi would do a full game of Dan! Da! Dan! for PSP as he did with EE Extra.

I like it more than EE myself. Something about the block busting, colors and music that is just infectious. :)
