Akai Katana is Cave's gift to those who wish to have a horizontal shooter with a strange side view / isometric perspective mix, flying tanks and scoring mechanics so complicated a built-in ten-minute tutorial scratches the surface.

Rules:
  • single credit, no restarts (except on stage 1)
  • all settings on default
  • demo scores are accepted (denote with "D", as in "ALL D" for a clear)

Nice improvement yushin! I'm sure the clear isn't very far :) .

You're making me want to play this one again. Need to put my screen in yoko first though.

EDIT: It took me so much practice a couple months ago to get 100m... now in 2 runs I got an higher score. More to come.

Had no reason to die in stage 5, but instead of playing safe I took the chance and tried out a few things, getting myself killed in the process. I'm in no rush of clearing anyway, I know I could if I wanted but scoring is much more fun.

Back to approximately my last year's level after a few days' practice. Except for a completely botched st5 boss, lost over 11 million.

Some adjustments to strats on st 1-3. Subpar stage 3 with mistakes, would improve 9-10 million with proper execution. Need to start practicing st4 & st5.

I have a problem on my last stages. When i start a cancel, the hit counter up fast to something like 175 hit. i wait the end of the reaction for up more my hit counter, but it never up more, or something like +10 or 20 hit. I lost really a lot of points and i dont understand why this counter dont want to up :<

I don't fully understand why getting more gold after the 150-170 range is much harder on later stages, especially stage 4.

The items counted toward the item limit should be the energy items, gold items and the blue chain reaction bullet converters ("bakuin"), but it feels like something else is happening as well - somehow enemies or bullets count toward the limit too?

You can test it on the second half of stage 4. If you clear a larger part of the screen of bullets and enemies, getting more gold is easier again. If you keep destroying things on the left side of the screen, leaving the right side alone, getting gold is hard.

The 220 hit "soft limit" is apparently caused by having the bakuin on the screen counted to the limit. Getting gold with C shot is easier at this point, as you know.

Some analysis of the superplay is probably needed... and translations of the text notes could also help. They are pretty much a narration to what is happening on the screen. Kyuzo translated the notes for stages 1 to 3 here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=40730 but stages 4 and 5 aren't translated.

My new score made at the Stunfest.

Yom - 417.561.280 - ALL - Yaezakura (type 3)

That run was not bad but i completely failed my stages 1 2 and 3. I've missed easy 20 milions on them. One live lost at the 5th boss, i lost something like 25 milions with this life (the life was with 6 bombs) and full live + full bomb gives you around 70M bonus and i was at 371M at the end of bansho, i won only 46M here. :/
I have made only 3 runs on the PCB because we had a lot of problems with cabs at the event. Then i hope toutch an other pcb of AK soon for beat my score again, and record/stream it this time :D

Y'om is a complete beast at Akai Katana. Saw him playing live and getting 400mill+ easily. Impressive stuff!

I have a men who have the PCB of AK near my appartment (something like 4 or 5 km) but he never answer to me when i asked to him to lend it :'(

I want to make something like a "petition" for convince him. If it works i want to stream all my runs just for your pleasure and for catch up the failure of the shmup scene of the stunfest :3
