Seeing as there's one for story mode, do you think we could have a "Level 8" scoreboard for character mode? I've just gotten 2.6 million with Mevious, and you could also include Enhasa's 3 million Kim score from the old thread. If so, then...

Level 8
Zil - 2,632,901 - Mevious - 34 - 7

I managed to record this one live as well: http://www.twitch.tv/okina_flying_fantastica/c/4229925

OK, I'll dig out Enhasa's old score as well. Great work.

I've started playing on shmupmame, so I can set some autofire up now, which makes the Memory fight much easier. And holy fuck 65 hit chain!

Nice, I've got my Japanese PS2 back now so I'll probably take another crack at this game soon.

I was luck enough this time to finish with all three lives intact.

All in all with 5 lives against Memory I managed to score just under a million which isn't too bad, a bit annoying to just miss out on the 2 million barrier but I'll take this for the moment.

I'm definitely scoring better in the earlier rounds now, I can consistently break 500k (or get close to it) by the end of the 3rd opponent.

Figured I may as well try this mode again since it's been ages, and once more I am amazed. Lucky night I guess.

Good score for story mode, I can't get a decent score in that because I'm not very good with Load Ran and Sprites, I need a fast character to survive for long against Memory.

Inadvertent improvement of minuscule proportions.

Well that inspired me to actually do serious runs, and freakishly enough, this came in 3 tries.

Character mode, level 4
Zil - 2,608,032 - Sprites - 29 - 7

I used Sprites because she seems a bit less likely to kill the AI than Mevious.

Zil - 2,958,022 - Mevious - 40 - 7

NEVERMIND. MEVIOUS FOREVER. <3

Twinkle Star Sprites - Story Mode (default)

Perikles - 1,625,590 - 23 - ALL

Lovely game, would be grand to play it competently at some point. The only reason my score is somewhat respectable is because I died so many times on Memory (not on my own volition, mind you!). Does anyone have some good recommendations on how to beat her reliably? I've tried a few methods, but it seems like there is scant little you can do if she decides to abuse her charge shot over and over again, especially if she is in overdrive mode. If you play as one of the stronger characters like Nanja Monja, you have a much better chance, I find it to be really tough with Load Ran, though.

Shouldn't scores between Saturn and non-Saturn versions be split? I believe the fight against Memory is much easier on the former.

That's news to me, but looking through the thread I think only Kollision was playing with the Saturn version. I'll do some research, if it turns out it's a lot easier I'll split it but tbh having Memory being easier would be a scoring disadvantage rather than advantage.

Update coming tomorrow when I'm on a computer.

It's a weird game to play for score, but I did it anyway. I did it years ago on the Saturn version and remember getting 2.3 million then. The one big difference is the Saturn version allows you to fight an extra stage against the bonus character Meirin (glasses girl with the pandas). On Mame now:

Image

Character mode

T-hawk - 1,893,901 - Mevious - 44 Hit - 7

Stage 4 went really well, got a long string of perfects for 200k on the round and 550k starting Dark Ran. She died quickly, but then I went two super long rounds against Mevious for 300k each, both went to Death KOs. Had a total of four lives against Memory, all went decently well for 100-150k but none spectacularly and I didn't beat her. Still, that's a solid score.

Mevious does seem really good for score, he's fast, and the computer seems to dodge his extra attacks well to keep rounds going a long time. I think the best character for actually beating Memory is Nanja Monja, that extra attack occupies a lot of the screen and can actually corner her. The other attack that can hit Memory semi-reliably is Arthur Schmitt's boss, which has the instantaneous laser that the computer doesn't always know to dodge.

And holy crap, pulled off this miracle in Story Mode. 56 hit chain against Memory!

Image

T-hawk - 2,034,811 - 56 Hit - All

Before that, also had 30-hit combos in each of stages 2 and 3 for 250k each. Got a long string of perfects in stage 4 for another 200k. Then it was four mediocre rounds against Dark Ran and Mevious (100-150k each), one good run (200k) against Memory, and then that giant one for over 400k in that last round plus 100k for the last remaining life.

Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princess

yeashie - ??? (Glitched Score, displayed as 164,784,868, probably around 6 billion points at the very least) - Do-Eddi - 13 - ALL

Welp, I think I broke the game. I have no clue what my actual score is supposed to be, I left notes in the comment section of the video to see if anyone can figure this out.
I also got a 3.7b run (which you can see at the very end of this video on the scoreboard), but I'm more impressed by this glitched score.

When you collect those coins on the $ side, the score changes with the lowest digit (normally always 0) going from 0 to something else - that's clear evidence of something rolling over. I don't know what the scoring rules are supposed to be with those coins, but clearly something is escalating enough to overflow.

When I used to play this, I couldn't see my score during each stage (it's hidden by default) but on the screen you see between each stage it would also show you the true score, don't know why that didn't happen in your run.

Anyway I could add the 3.7 score to the table if you want?

Just press L1 to toggle the score display within the level.
It's a bit of a hassle because you have to do this in every single stage, but yeah the resource is there.

Go ahead and add the 3.7b. I'm also well aware of the in-game score display by pressing L1 (I do that in each stage in the video), the problem is the fact that it seems I lose score at one point which ends up messing with my score at the very end, I explained my observations in the video description. Weird stuff.
