Wolflame (new Astro Port vert)

Post by DJ Incompetent »

Doujin dev Astro Port's next STG will be a traditional vert.
http://www.interq.or.jp/saturn/takuhama/wf.html

-Screenshots show player ship using a fixed two-option ship reminiscent of default Armed Police Batrider crafts.

-A bossfight straight-up rips off Deviate from APB.
Image

-Traditional Raizing bomb? or Viper Phase 1 Seibu attempt?

Great news, I like most of Astro Port's games. But one thing I noticed from the screenshoot was that the player ship looks abit big. Can't complain yet when havent chance to play it, but going on the pic it looks big :D Also they should try to test new fonts. Every single of their games have had same looking menu, not a bad thing, but still.

The ship does have two options but if anything it's more of a Strania/Valkyrius type thing since each option can hold a different weapon.
Deviate looks nice but it is strange if he's just a random stage boss in the main game, would be nicer and more "fair" to have him as a hidden extra boss..

Overall pretty cool, there aren't many Raizing homage doujin games but then this doesn't look very Raizing to me outside of Deviate paying a visit.

Looks like a bird's eye view of Gigantic Army. The scenery and aesthetics are identical.

I understand that the name is a portmanteau of Wolf and Flame, but it sounds pretty silly.
Game looks like it could be fun though.

Instant buy barring unforseen catastrophe. <333 Gigantic Army, Satazius, Adventia and Steel Strider long long time. AP know how to blow metal shit up with violence.

It would be lovely if we got a real Raizing-ish doujin game. I'm holding my enthusiasm, though.

Hellsinker is already a Raizing-ish/Yagawa-ish doujin. The visual style may be very different but design element-wise the only thing it's missing is medal chaining... Okay, secondary ship bits too I guess.

... Okay, and power-ups. I still contend it plays very similarly though.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

I really enjoy both Satazius and APB, so this should be two great tastes that taste great together.

I think comparing it to APB is a bit premature. It would probably be a homage if anything, and it mostly fits in with the sort of boss types you see in Astro Port's games.

All of Astro Port's games look similar. Grungy, industrial Flash :P

I like the look of the screenshots, and Astro Port's other works are lots of fun. I'll be looking forward to this, "APB-esque" or not.

Cool beans. Pretty interesting that this is their ninth game as Astro Port, but only their second vertical shmup. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out, hopefully after Super Tank Warfare: Adventia and Steel Strider they'll return to the more traditional arcade formula.

Considering what Satazius was like I expect this'll have homage to a lot of other shmups, Batrider included. Haven't tried the other titles though but I'm cautiously interested here too.

This is interesting. One of the other screenshots had an enemy that resembled Black Heart a little bit.

I think they wanted you to pronounce it "WolFlame/Wol-Flame".

Too bad Wolf Lame will become canon lol.

I'm looking forward this release. I really enjoy Satazius and I hope this will be at least as good, but as vertical shmup.

I agree with what has been said about Steel Strider. I had been waiting for this game since it was announced and I've been totally dissapointed by the new mouse pointing system, à la mode, but unnaceptable for an arcade. Gigantic Army was perfect in this sense and absolutelly a delight to play with an arcade control panel.

Looks better than I expected. Getting strong Raiden Fighters vibes from that trailer.

In a marked contrast to Astebreed's trailer, it shows a lot more of what I care about (machines blowing each other up). It's looking very competent and fun.

Thanks!

It doesn't play like Batrider at all, for those wondering. Perhaps it is more akin to Raiden? Slow scrolling, slow ship movement, nature landscapes, military enemy design, some extremely fast shots, and similar weapon power up system as some Raiden games, although you can power up each side individually.

Yep, very much a Raiden clone. I'm a bit disappointed and this might be the first Astro Port game I skip completely, but I've never really cared for that style of shmups so take that with a grain of salt.

Your ship is slow, enemy bullets are fast and the playing field is nearly twice as wide as can be seen on the screen at one time. Some enemies are even near-carbon copies from Raiden. The weapon system isn't quite as unforgiving, the max. level is 5 and the power level is cumulative between weapons. Left and right side of the ship can have a different weapon and the sides' power levels are independent of each other. Upon dying you start from a checkpoint with nothing BUT if you stay alive for a few moments you'll get a special power-up that restores you to the power levels you had before dying. So that's pretty nice.

The three weapons are familiar. Red for spreadshot and homing missiles, green for big laser that fires intermittently and blue for smaller lasers that lock-on to enemies. Collect small and big stars for end-of-stage bonuses, doesn't seem to be any more complex scoring system than that.

Astro has never cared much for adding depth to their games, so I'm not surprised that there's not much of a score system.

Cleared the demo with 1 million, it's just two stages, it's not bad but I'm not blown away either, green weapon seems much stronger than the rest. Deviate is at the end of stage 2 and it's telegraphed by mini-me's, much like Blackheart in Garegga, its behavior is Raiden-like in that it has very fast attacks and dies quickly but its turrets are milkable at least.
Big ships are cool, if you know where the hitbox is.

The Way to Play(TM) with this is on Hard or Insane. The balancing of the options then becomes obvious, typical Raiden style. And don't think that just because the bomb might resemble something Raizing-like it'll give you invulnerability either: if you're sitting in front of a large plane you can still crash into it. Certainly helps for offensive use though. There's a TATE option and the screen options in general is considerably improved over what I saw last in Satazius.

I'm digging this. Only thing I'm disappointed with is the music that's clearly not designed to loop. Perhaps it's something they'll fix from the trial?
