Touhou PoFV tournament

Post by yorgje »

If y'all wanna test your mettle against some Touhou players, you can sign up for a PoFV tourney here:

PoFV is a PvP shmup, sort of like twinkle star sprites. Very fun.

Everything's being organized by Senozza on irc.rizon.net, but if you have immediate questions and are too lazy to get over to IRC, I can probably answer most questions you have here.

Signed up.

It's sad that #3 was inconclusive. I was having a blast using Lyrica for most of it. I think many people were surprised by how dangerous Lyrica is. The match between me and zil was also pretty hype

Regarding bans, while Reimu's bans have brought about some variety, I don't think Reimu is any better than Marisa, Komachi or even Youmu, so I don't think there is any reason to ban her again. If I recall correctly, all it did was make most people play Marisa instead.

Banning use of any character anywhere in any game in a tournament is just downright cowardly.

Also I wish ZUN would release another one of these. With an all new cast (except for Reimu, Marisa, and maybe Sanae) like in PoDD though.

Care to explain how you came to this idiotic conclusion?

Fine then, does that PoFV + Adonis setup work ok on WINE?

Yeah, it turned out that the Reimu ban was sort of unpopular because the top 2 most used characters again took up over 50% of character choices (Marisa at 34% and Komachi at 17%). Although, I think that while banning Reimu doesn't seem to improve variety much, from what I've heard, it's also easier to be flexible with your character choice if your opponent is not using Reimu, since a high latency Reimu basically forces you to play a Reimu mirror, while you can probably do okay against other high tier characters with a high tier character of your choice. Well, I don't play well enough to say this with conviction, but I think I recall Zil saying something about that in the past.

I think that making extremely broad universal claims about things tends to be difficult to justify. I'd say that bans can be justified depending on the aims of the tournament. If a game is young and the tournament is intended to tease out the inner workings of a metagame, then I can see bans being unjustified. However, PoFV is certainly not new, and although it doesn't have a terribly active competitive scene, it does have widely accepted and well-understood tier groupings. The goal here is definitely for the comptitors to just have fun, and I think that an important aspect of that is bringing out what, in a soft sense, the community thinks of as the spirit of the game. As you mentioned, character diversity is a central part to one's enjoyment of the phantasmagoria games, and so bans that promote that are certainly justifiable on those grounds.

Yes, I personally use wine and it works fine.

That's what I think, yes. And I find her very unfun to play as / against. I don't think it's really necessary to ban her, no, but I do think it's more fun.

Last I heard there were about 15 people signed up, so at 3 matches per day I'd expect it to span a week or so.
