Receivers without the silent streaming bug
Looking for a receiver with SPDIF that does not have the "silent streaming" bug.
Anyone got a receiver that works ok?
Maybe we should make a list of receivers that works fine with SPDIF modded consoles?

Re: Receivers without the silent streaming bug
All Cambridge Audio models seem to have the bug.
Sony STR-DN840 works great, no silent streaming bug here.

Re: Receivers without the silent streaming bug
Thanks BuckoA51!
The Sony STR-DN840 looks a like great choice.
(maybe the STR-DN840 integrates well with the W6/W8/W9 too?)
Anyone tested the STR-DN1040?

Re: Receivers without the silent streaming bug
What is "the silent streaming bug"?
I used to have a Sony STR-DG820 receiver, and it would "loose sync" when there was no audio transmitted. It resulted in the audio clicking and cutting off the first bit when sound started to play. It was really bad in RPGs with a lot of talk and sometimes no background noise/music. Is that what you're talking about?
Now I have a Yamaha RX-A1010. Besides sounding much better (it's also a more expensive AVR) it doesn't click with S/PDIF, and it works perfectly with my S/PDIF modified Saturn.
The RX-A1010 works well with ARC and HDMI-CEC with my Sony W9.
EDIT: The Yamaha also has the option to completely disable the built in video processor (which is awful anyway) so it does lag-free HDMI switching. When I were in the market for a new receiver I had my choices narrowed down to some Onkyo and the Yamaha. Once I realized that the Onkyo's video processing couldn't be disabled completely, AND that it had a really weird bug where it colored the darker parts of a grayscale pattern brown, I lost all interest. Glad I did because the Yamaha is awesome
Should you decide to look into Yamaha's AVRs then be sure to read some reviews anyway, since some of what I say could have been changed in the newer models.

Yes, that's exactly it.Konsolkongen wrote:It resulted in the audio clicking and cutting off the first bit when sound started to play. It was really bad in RPGs with a lot of talk and sometimes no background noise/music. Is that what you're talking about?
The RX-A1010 looks very interesting indeed

I'll be modding my SNES for SPDIF soon. Is this bug present in both TOSLINK and Coax types of connections?

Re: Receivers without the silent streaming bug
It was on the STR-DG820.
However it was source dependent. I never heard any clicking when listening to music CDs with my CD-player connected with either Toslink or Coax, thank god! I also can't recall if I ever heard any clicking from my modified Saturn, but I bought the Yamaha not long after modifying the Saturn. The problem was really obvious with the PS2 and perhaps the Xbox too.

TOSLINK and Coax AND HDMI on the Cambridge Audio Azur 551R I used to own.
That's correct, it doesn't affect dolby digital, DTS etc but since you always get LPCM if you optical audio modify a retro games console...However it was source dependent.

Hmm... but my CD player outputs in LPCM 2.0. Perhaps it just keeps sending a signal between tracks?

Re: Receivers without the silent streaming bug
Can anyone name a SNES title that will easily demonstrate this "bug"? I just installed SPDIF-out on my SNES, and while the first second or so of audio doesn't play (it takes a second to "pick up" the signal), I haven't been able to find a perfectly silent moment in a game to see if it will drop out during silence. I have an SD2SNES so I can test pretty much anything...

Try tales of phantasia and go to "sound menu" and play with the tracks. It has a volume meter display so you know when you are supposed be hearing music. My old Sony had the bug, you could hear it click on and off when using the SNES, it was SUPER annoying.

Re: Receivers without the silent streaming bug
Perfect! Thanks. I have a Pioneer VSX-822-K receiver and it does not exhibit this bug. Using a SNES with SCART to XRGB-mini to my receiver, and coax SPDIF going straight to my receiver, with the receiver set to override audio with coax instead of HDMI audio. I played a song, stopped it, waited an entire minute, then started a song up again and you could definitely hear everything.muckyfingers wrote:darcagn wrote:Can anyone name a SNES title that will easily demonstrate this "bug"? Sweet, I'll keep that model in mind.
