RQ: Gradius 3 Arcade - Cube Attack patterns

Arguably the most nasty section of any video game... anyone have any information or tips on how to conquer this demon?

Here's what I know so far:

-Cubes seem to be randomly generated.

-The generation takes place either at the very end of the plant stage (screen transition), or upon starting the game. The numbers for the cubes are re-generated upon death. I know this from the use of savestates.

-Some of the cubes will throw themselves away if you are hiding back far enough (seems to happen only to the cubes that are useful to you...)

-The first 3 or so charging cubes do so slow enough and from far back enough that you can get out of the way pretty easily.



Is there any way I can influence the pattern, or know which ones will charge?
