So lately I've been hooked on the classic PC puzzle game Lemmings... okay, to be honest, I've been playing the Sega Genesis port, which I found locally, but I want to get the MS-DOS version someday and do an in-depth comparison of the two.

For now, I just want to bring fellow fans of the little green-haired suicidally stupid rodents together.

Since questions are always a good way to get topics rolling, I'll ask a few:

1) What's your favorite version of Lemmings?

2) Have you ever played any of the sequels (Lemmings 2: the Tribes, All New World of Lemmings, Revolution etc.) and if so, what did you think of them?

3) What's your favorite level?

4) Favorite ability? ("Nuke button" is a valid answer)

5) Do you prefer to try to save every lemming or only the minimum the level requires?

And here's a serious question: Has anyone ever beaten the original Gameboy port? I've heard rumors that its unbeatable due to glitches in the programming, but I'm not sure that's true.

Amiga version by a landslide.

I played Lemmings 2, as well as Oh No! More Lemmings. The former I am not a fan of, it overcomplicates stuff. The latter is just more levels. Ok fun.

3) What's your favorite level?

Dunno, been too long.

4) Favorite ability? ("Nuke button" is a valid answer)

I always liked how if one Lemming has both Climber and Floater abilities they become an Athlete.

5) Do you prefer to try to save every lemming or only the minimum the level requires?

Depends on the level. But usually I try to save as many as possible.

Seconding the Amiga version of the original game.

But my favorite Lemmings clone is King Arthur's World.

Amiga versions are where it's at, best looking, sounding and smoothest versions by miles.

Personally although I know many thought it overly complicated, I still love the Amiga version of Lemmings 2. It alleviated my main beef with the original, in that if you're stuck at any point you can simply come back to that world later and try another. Has my favourite set of levels in there - the Space world has some funky abilities, real fun soundtrack, and my favourite Lemming of all with the little sticky boots guy. How a sprite so small can be so perfectly animated is beyond me.

I did play a later sequel that had zoomed the viewpoint right in and didn't really like it. I do think 3D on the PS1 is a hugely under rated entry in the series, may revisit that again myself soon.

1) What's your favorite version of Lemmings?

Never got around to playing amiga/PC version. Did play a lot of Lemmings 1 on genesis when I was like 14, and managed to beat it entirely (Fun, Tricky, Taxing, Mayhem, Present, Sunsoft) at that age, no internet involved. I'm still quite proud of it.

2) Have you ever played any of the sequels (Lemmings 2: the Tribes, All New World of Lemmings, Revolution etc.) and if so, what did you think of them?

Played Lemmings 2 (too many abilities, some quite obscure), lemmings PSP and lemmings PSN, both quite good.

3) What's your favorite level?

"Just a minute" is good, but rather hard.
I loved those levels in the genesis where the setting and music changed completely. Those levels were huge, fun, and easy.
See sunsoft special or a beast of a level for instance.

I stick to the X68000 version these days. Graphics and content are 1:1 with the Amiha original. Though it runs in 31khz and is FM of course. It even has the 2 player mode with dual mouse support which all the other ports lack.

And call me crazy, but my 2nd favorite game was 3D Lemmings for DOS. Most people hated it, but I found it quite fun, just have to take the time to setup your cameras in proper spots. It was really hard though, even my friend who was a crazy Lemmings freak never beat it.

Ah yes, I've played quite a lot of Lemmings over the years.

Lemmings 1 was fun but I was too young at the time to play it properly, never got too far. Lemmings 2 was way too complicated so never got into it.

3D Lemmings was great, and had many fun levels, but I'd say the dated graphics makes it hard to play nowadays. Got really, really far (made it to the mayhem levels), but never finished it. A couple of my favorite levels were in this game, in one you started at the top of a huge statue and you had to dig your way to the bottom using the first-person camera. In another you started onboard a plane and you had to zipline to another one (kind of like an evacuation).

PSN Lemmings is alright, but kind of easy. Only took me a week to complete it.

Lemmings Revolution is awesome and probably my favorite. Lots of different levels, some really challenging ones and you unlock them in a non-linear way, so you can do the easy levels first and leave the difficult ones for later. If I had to recommend only one Lemmings game, it'd be this one.

I'm not sure either, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was true of the GBC port given how messed up it is. I used to have the GB b/w port, but I haven't beaten it. Seemed to be decent, but not aa good as the PC, SNES, or Genesis versions.

Despite the lack of mouse support and shorter levels, I like the Genesis port quite a bit. It has a lot of levels unique to the port and slick music. It even has a Hebereke level.

First played it on SNES. I had the Mac version in the mid 90s which I remember being quite good.

I'm surprised how many votes the Amiga got. With how all the ports tend to change things and add or remove features and levels, there's not one port ya'll feel is superior?

Of course you can count my vote for the Amiga version as well.

BUT, if you need console alternatives, I'd offer Lemmings & Oh No! More Lemmings for Playstation.

And the best portable attempt at Lemmings is without a doubt the unofficial port for DS, "Lemmings DS".

As you can see from my choices, respect for the original graphics is mandatory, and none of the recent Sony / T17 efforts is of my taste.

Probably the Amiga one, purely for its input method. The Snes version has a better soundtrack, though. There I said it! Just give a listen the instruments are a lot better.

Overwhelmingly the Amiga version was the best- I still have it, but haven't played it for years. Might just have a go on it tomorrow for old times sake.

For me, it had to be played with a mouse- the console controllers just never really worked with it.

ZX Spectrum version (48k), having that edition with no music, sounds and grimy monochrome graphics pretty much defined Lemmings as this really creepy and enigmatic game for me, pretty much the opposite of how it was supposed to be perceived.

I'm a fan of the Genesis version myself, mainly because of the extreme amount of pixels in the self-destruct and I feel that the incarnation of Keep Your Hair On Mr Lemming is one of the best when emulated correctly, even against the original Amiga module track. It really does sound different between emulator cores though.
