Still sounds normal. Flash goes bad, as do EPROMs. That flash doesn't seem to have quite as long a shelf life as the older tech shouldn't surprise anyone.IseeThings wrote:Yes, it's sensible use of them as a precaution, the main issue is that we're seeing data on (unmarked) bad blocks anyway so either they didn't do a good job of detecting the bad blocks, or they've gone bad since. Both are significant cause for concern IMHO.cools wrote:Isn't this entirely normal usage for flash chips?IseeThings wrote:I don't know if they're just poor quality by default, or reject bin material, but Cave were certainly aware that some of the flash ROMs could potentially contain bad blocks. The start of the u2 flash rom for each game has a table marking the bad blocks in the ROM. The rest of the ROM is then programmed around those bad blocks in an attempt to make sure no code / data was written to bad parts of the ROM.
What Cave should have done is treated the flash properly - scanning/logging/rewriting bad blocks. But why would they do this? Game goes bad - they take it back and reprogram it.

Re: too close for comfort - black label
I didn't say it was surprising, I said it was worrying, shouldn't need 3 copies of a game from 2008 just to get one that doesn't have corrupt data! (and even then what we ended up with was pieced together from 3 bad ones, rather than actually finding a good one)cools wrote:

People definitely need to be aware that these things aren't rock-solid like the old MASK roms (and even seem *significantly* worse than EPROMs) Stuff based on Flash tech is as bad as the stuff based on HDD tech, it's not going to stand the test of time at all.
Re: too close for comfort - black label
Five years seems pretty acceptable to me for a read/write storage chip
Just need someone to figure out (release) a reprogramming tool for them.
I've heard anecdotes that certain bits of the board cannot be reprogrammed without desoldering chips though...

Savestates seem to work for DFK.
However there is absolutely no slowdown which makes the game pretty much unplayable if you want to do anything serious with it.

I tried savestates, worked loading it once but reloading the savestate afterwards made the emulation freeze. I could've sworn the boss end animations were more glitchy playing from savestate too.
But yeah, slowdown works, turn on the blitter and mess with the blitter speed.

Re: too close for comfort - black label
Blitter-slider doesn't seem to do anything with DFK... Boss death still have slowdown but even that doesn't change with blitter slider
Re: too close for comfort - black label
Does the blitter delay help Ibara. I been playing that a bit and I bet there need to be slowndown somewhere.
Also what does the (unsafe) in blitter delay mean, unsafe for the pc or unsafe for the emulation?

Fiddled with the Blitter slider a bit.
77% is as low as I can go to get the proper slowdown on the last laser wheels, however this causes other areas to have too much slowdown in return. So yeah the slowdown is far from perfect.
I remember Erppo doing it once with the silly D-ship before. Surprisingly the bug doesn't work during score attack mode in the port.

Re: too close for comfort - black label
Jaimers, how much excess slowdown are you getting in the others parts of the game at 77%? How low would you have to go to make these other parts play properly? I would rather be lacking a little slowdown in the laser wheels than have too much in other parts so that, when the port gets here, the game gets easier and not harder.
Re: too close for comfort - black label
Hm? I cranked it up to 100 and didn't even notice slowdown

Re: too close for comfort - black label
Yeah.. same here...

Re: too close for comfort - black label
Are you noticing slowdown playing other games in the same build?
Re: too close for comfort - black label
the slider does nothing if you don't actually turn blitter on in the config
Re: too close for comfort - black label
All this is very cool but where can we get the dfk rom ? I've been waiting since forever to play this damn game. Link. Now.

Be patient, either use some google foo, or wait a while and it will show up in the usual places.
edit: or actually BUY THE GAME!!!!

Re: too close for comfort - black label
Yeah if you do own a 360 it totally worth the get. Both ntsc-jap, us and pal, also the PAL (region free) one is dirt cheap. I think it's to early for these games to be honest.nasty_wolverine wrote: edit: or actually BUY THE GAME!!!!
But still Im real happy to be able to play Ibara.
But the other ones like Espgaluda II, Deathsmiles, Mushihimesama Futari, Pink Sweets and MM Pork are all possible to get on 360. You dont even need a Japanese 360 for them

If you read this thread carefully enough, then you should have no problems finding it...VHS-porn wrote:Fuck the rules.

Re: too close for comfort - black label
Personally I don't have a 360 and don't plan to have one (except maybe when they'll get dirt cheap, but by then all those games will be way too expensive), so I just buy games I can play, and if I can't play something for cash related reasons I don't see why I shouldn't still enjoy it when technology allows me to. I love to download as much as I love buying stuff, I really don't see any issues with illegal downloads.
I do understand why forums have rules about it though

If you can't see the links in front of your face, then good luck dodging danmaku with half-assed emulation and no slowdown :p
(I kid, I kid)
But srsly.....

Lol now I really feel stupid
I mean I'm not bad with computer and never have trouble finding what I'm looking for, but I scanned this thread at least twice and all I saw was links to UME (UME dev website is down for me btw, or is it just my firewall trying to get in my way ?).
If it's as easy as you say then I just took a serious slap in the face.

Re: too close for comfort - black label
I don't want to see any more links or references for where to find places that host the ROMs, or even point at them, or I'll simply delete the entire thread.
