Idk, I doubt most people would even know who he is. I damn near forgot Reagan ever got shot at until I saw your comment.

But yeah, he should do something to rub it in. Although I'm feeling pretty skeptical that Biden could win reelection at this point. Seems like he doesn't have the momentum necessary and the electorate is younger and changing and leaning farther to the right. Or so it looks to me anyway. Here in Balitmore even it's apparent the youngers are less into liberalism. It seems like they are maybe less appreciative of the world they stepped into, and fewer and fewer of them can ever look forward to owning a home or going to college or a whole lot of other crap that the oldies did for the cost of a scooter and an ice cream cone.

It's hard to appreciate when you can see how much worse you have it than your grandparents, at least with regard to future prospects.

Technology improves but the serf's lot does not.

I don't think young people are necessarily turning to conservatism so much as becoming dis-enfranchised with liberalism and particularly with progressivism. This notion that the world improves, things get better and we "progress" as a species has been refuted many times by uncomfortable realities. We are currently progressing towards species extinction.

Sure. I have noticed a shift right in the politics of people in my community though. In contrast to the overwhelmingly liberal millennial population in Maryland's more densely populated areas.

"We are currently progressing towards species extinction."

Yeah, for sure. That's what I think is driving it too; I think a lot of them (zoomers) have deduced that the only way to "get theirs" is to play the capitalist Ponzi scheme and cross their fingers rather than try to fix the planet.

That might be from the male/female divergence we've been seeing. Are women included in your sample group?

South Korea in particular is like incel central these days. For younger people, the reward isn't so much about stomping on people with a boot in particular, but going back to the patriarchy. When men were worshiped like gods, and women had to marry one if they wanted to survive.

Basically, they feel like they have no social status and no value to society. The bitterness is natural.

In a more reductive way of framing it, they want government-issued wives. While women want the exact opposite, to *not* end up chained to a sink.

Absolutely. I think the number of more conservative women I'm seeing is the more striking thing. They are generally "trad" women of one sort or another, often more on the religious side, but not always.

My guess is that they are moving here from the more rural areas of MD that tend to be more conservative (the areas that fought for the South and carried the Crossland Banner). Since white flight has waned and cities are cool to live in, and also Baltimore is basically the last affordable east coast city. It's far cheaper to buy a house here than it is in the "nice" parts of the suburbs.

In the new capitalist utopia, both men and women end up chained to a sweat shop or unemployment line. Which I think we can all agree, is far superior. :|

Maybe. But I also don't think the world can talk about the evils of capitalism and the corporate world endlessly and then act shocked when women take the ticket to nope out of the whole scam. Yeah, financial capital is political capital so you can never get around that equation, but the notion that paid job work automatically equals emancipation is a big fat giant lie for all the same reasons it is for men. I totally expect more women to take the stay at home route in the future if they can do it without the family starving. It's still a badge of honour in Japan for a woman to marry at 25 and retire, plenty of young women I've worked with can't wait to get out, and then they do, and a year later they come back with the cute baby and make all the other women super jealous.

Talk about South Korea here, the most proudly Confucian of countries, that was always the Confucian deal. It wasn't that women were totally enslaved by the patriarchy, it was that they were made masters of the domestic realm, men the public realm. Yeah, you can totally point to domestic abuse situations that break the social contract, but East Asia's still a continent full of guys complaining about getting bossed around by their wives at home. I always laugh at spineless guys who think they're going to go to Asia and find a submissive domestic servant for a wife, they have no idea what historico-cultural buzzsaw they've probably walked themselves into.

Not shocked at that in general, just surprised at the local political demographic shifts. There's obviously reasons for it. I'd also say that they do seem to be largely from conservative families and moving here from the counties.

Goddamnit Strider, SkyKid already called me a weeb and now you're trying to tempt me with this.

I watched a new breadtuber the other month, and she said these based lines like "What if we put women in the position of oppressor would that help?" and "You have to have some suppressed masochist kink if you choose to embrace reality, because... just look at it."

And I was like "ho ho ho.... my masochism isn't suppressed at all."

Absolutely. I think the number of more conservative women I'm seeing is the more striking thing. They are generally "trad" women of one sort or another, often more on the religious side, but not always.

Argh, tell someone something they wish were true enough and they'll believe it. There was some high profile trad lady who tried the trad life and trad hated it. And she's branded as a traitor by the group for it. She's still going to vote for Trump twenty times and feel like she defeated some great Satan when doormat Biden reverts to being a doormat.

On a tangentially related note: dog murderer lady is banned from all native people's land in her state.

Heh, since I live my life in youtube and webnovels and /r/singularity, this reminded me of this bit.

It made me consider what it would really be like dating a gaijin hunter. To a forever alone guy, they wouldn't care though. Even getting punched in the face by a girl is a dream among dreams for them.

I remember this early internet article about the writer's personal experiment on how desperate men on the internet are. Offering up ridiculous scenarios like dressing up in bear suits and hanging out in the forest doing "bear stuff". The last one was "I want to punch you in the face." And made clear nothing else would happen, and her boyfriend would be there to watch. They got some takers on this. One of them was even a little surly when they didn't get a reply: "man... a guy can't even get punched in the face..."

Don't really know how to feel for the hypothetical companion robots of the future. But I do know whenever I read stuff from r/foreveralonewomen, I feel like they do deserve a break and a hug. We'll all go extinct, outbred by impossible dream people like Jessica Rabbit and Elmer Fudd, but it's probably for the best.

Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a I Have No Mouth thing and we all end up in Bill Gates's planetary breeding camp.

Some weird times we live in, that I can't say there's a 0% chance of that happening with fair confidence.

Ha. Pretttty funnny. Mostly on point, but there are some cheat codes for some of the downsides, and some of it is either hyperbole or just one possible outcome. Obviously the natural disaster thing is real; I had a whole parking lot collapse near my apartment during the earthquakes in 2011. Wouldn't want to go through that again

I kinda don't like what his pitch accent teaching gimmick has done to some of the conversation around Japanese learning, but by & large Dogen is one of the few Japan YouTubers aiming his content at English speakers who doesn't seem to be kind of a dirtbag/lamebag. Well, it's rigged.

We all know this, but most women in western nations (even successful women) will fully expect their mate to earn more or hold a lot of valuable capital. I'm sure some outliers will chime and argue, but the boys out there are living it every single day. I'm just telling the truth. Women keep the socio-econonic class order in line for the boys. Under normal circumstances, they are the gatekeepers and their choices drive results. Women get to come up by choosing a successful partner; men get rejected if they don't show off beautiful feathers, own a huge nest (I didn't say "build"), and perform an impressive dance--and that often holds true for situations where she doesn't (really) need any help coming up. Ultimately, she makes the choice under normal circumstances.

(If you're upset, I'll add that I'm quite lucky--thank you very much. So, you can assume that I'm bitter if that helps you with denial. It won't make me unhappy or upset my life, but you're more than welcome to use some strategies to maintain your own happiness in your bubble. I'm just telling the truth.)

The worst part is, the boys get very little sympathy. And, it's not because they don't engage or they are just gruff men that don't talk. We make a lot of judgements about strangers based on sex. Men aren't turning down your sympathy because they're too tough. The truth is, you aren't extending it.

For instance:
49 percent of men and 53 percent of women said they would tell a male cheater, “You made a marriage commitment that you have broken and should feel sorry.” In contrast, only 39 percent of men and 37 percent of women would say this to a female cheater. The circumstances were identical, but men and women were both more likely to tell a male cheater he broke his commitment and should feel sorry.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/bl ... e-cheaters

There's no sympathy. She can even get a business arrangement relationship if that's her prerogative. It's little bit rigged. If she can't have it all in one package, she can piece it together. No problem. Of course, the boys are more than happy to play along. This is who we all are.

Oh yes, I'm sure there are plenty of other frustrations for women and other sexual orientations to consider. I know it's different outside of western nations. There are countless possibilities where a person might try to tip the scales with coercion (money, power, or physical intimidation). I'm not writing a comprehensive book, here. We're talking about normie straight couples.

Finally, unattractive people can get shut out completely. If you believe in a supreme being, you should inquire about that. If it feels unfair, that's because it probably is. I certainly wouldn't do that to someone I love--especially if I had the power to shape everything to my will. If there is a supreme being, Mark Twain and I would love some answers about all the suffering. My apologies if I ever took my own circumstances for granted. In my defense, I can only be myself and I'm only human.

That's super cute and I love cat content, but I always get frustrated when I see ppl getting upset that their pet (or kid) is doing something bad and they just fucking sit there with the phone recording it. I know it's a bit and everything, but it's like what the hell, if you don't like it so much maybe put the damn phone down and fix the situation or discipline your kid rather than giving them positive feedback for something like that

I mean that cat isn't really doing anything so bad, but yeah it's still kinda triggering lol

Appearance is really one of the cruelest things. If you're ugly, people are physically repulsed to even look at you. It's funny in some imaginary world of reversed-sense-of-beauty hentai where an elf girl is like "we elves can't even stand to do it with each other without a bag on our heads! it's always been my dream to do it without a bag on my head!"

Much less amusing when nobody wants to be around you, something you have to live with every second of your life. Not everyone is built to be a hermit or a monk.

It always makes me feel bad about how my smexiness is absolutely wasted on me, whenever a rando tries to chat me up. I don't really know how to reject them; explaining to them that the airforce shirt I'm wearing doesn't mean I'm a normie, but that it's something that was issued in basic training 22 years ago (now phased out for a much nicer shirt) and I'm actually a hobo walking around in his pajamas. That I'm older or way older than they think I am (standard of fitness in this country is awful). That I'm a member of the volcel church, and the kinds of girls I'm into would never chat up a stranger in a Wal-Mart. Preferring to never leave their room instead, doing nerd shit.

... it really doesn't help since I'm in Oklahoma. In California and Texas, I was only a bit above average. Here? I feel like the most beautiful man in all of Oklahoma. Like Chris Hemsworth, despite not really being a 5/5.

Japan YouTubers aiming his content at English speakers who doesn't seem to be kind of a dirtbag/lamebag

I dunno how it is these days. I had a phase ten years ago where I was into foreigners living in japan vloggers. They were just people, for better and worse. Despite being a massive misanthrope, I do try to appreciate people for what they are and not what they aren't. You'll drive yourself crazy if you focus on what they aren't.

Did think Gimmeabreakman was a chill guy. He seemed to actually like humans, a core necessity to have any kind of charisma. Just a dude that wanted to share his life with strangers on the internet.

SoraTheTroll's "educational" comedy bits are something I find highly amusing, and I watch one every few months.

.... aren't they mostly just people? Maybe I just have no exposure to the obnoxious Tik-Tok people, like that guy who fed a bear a pizza and got it killed. Yeah, those kinds of desperate shitheads are tools.

(As for learning languages, it seems like television/video really is a crucial learning tool. Inputs and context and using your brain to figure things out and make connections are important. I can't believe they literally have a teacher stand there and read a dictionary at people in highschools. This one ex-pornstar said she learned english from watching wrestling, which she was a little embarrassed about because of the "rude" language. Her english was flawless.)

Rachel and Jun!

I wanted to say it's good to see that they're still doing alright but-

Aw. Texan in Tokyo at least made a retirement video. (They're not like Victor, who's perfectly happy to share walking his kids to school. It's super cute, but I totally understand how it can be a much crazier kind of thing to share if he were a woman instead.) I hate when people quit without letting their viewers know. Speaking of which, looks like they dropped a dropping-in update! Let's watch it!

.. they're still alive! Cool.

I always thought she got ripped off when Lady Sasuke didn't include her run in the broadcast.

I had a close friend in HS that was in the ballpark. We had a falling out of sorts, after which he ended up seeing my ex GF for awhile

We broke up bc she didn't want to get physical, and I was a horny teenager and blah blah blah. Her parents were strict Christians and they didn't allow her to date, so we had to meet in secret at the ice skating rink. Was super cute while it lasted, but she was also super nuts and controlling and it blew the hell up

Anyway my buddy was perfect to her because he was A/grey or whatever he called himself at the time, and she felt no pressure to do anything physical. He even got to meet the parents! But then fucked the whole thing up by admitting to doing drugs. I mean that was thirty years ago and things have changed, but yeah way to go

I always got the impression recreational drugs were a form of self medicating. I think a lot of happy sober like me might just be lucky?

On the extreme end, a junkie friend once asked me if I had a hole in my soul and there's something missing that can't ever be filled. Honestly, the answer is no. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'll never forget how dead serious he was and how helpless I felt.

I don't use the word junkie lightly. Don't know what happened to him. Probably nothing good. Can't stick next to a junkie for long. Self preservation and whatnot.

I once encountered one of those guys talking about how he was seeking "meaningless" pleasure before finding god or whatever. I, too, don't find pleasure meaningless and find them baffling. You're supposed to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Those are some of your core terminal values.

It is odd how often they turn to the extreme rigidity of a religious code to stay on a better path. Had an uncle like that. It might be they're just fundamentally boring people who want simple buttons, cheatcodes to succeed at life. Drugs are as close to wireheading yourself as you can get. Addiction really fucks a brain up, where you're only able to care about one single thing. No joy from outside things; it's not a fucking "hole in your soul" it's a fucked up reward ecosystem where you're unable to find pleasure in eating a tasty sandwich or taking a dump. Yeah, you'd feel empty too if you didn't have a variety of interests to stimulate the different regions of your brain.

Also please don't confuse "volcel" with "turnip"! salari and anita aren't in our clubhouse

Someone mentioned the reason they didn't like her critique about video games was it was from a very "sex negative" perspective. And it made me think, yeah, it kind of seemed like that. That intercourse to her was giving "points" to the male and taking away "points" from the lady, in some kind of abstract cosmic sense.

The "sexist" critique especially gets overused. If Kingdom Death is "sexist", so too all the day time soaps. These things aren't quite on the same level as FATAL, where it's to the point where the author doesn't feel like women have a point of view at all.

.... good lord, I learned a little bit more about FATAL last week. You remember how I used to say that racism is a sliding scale on size differences? (That's another physical blessing I have; I'm a rounding error away from being a 6' fully grown man instead of a 5'11" manlet) The FATAL rulebooks repeatedly mentions the "scientific" "fact" that black men aren't bigger despite what most people think, while some other races that are thought of as smaller are indeed smaller. It really is that juvenile and petty. (It really is a bizarre game made to be as offensive and gross as possible. Fans/creators of games like that Lesbian Swordfighters one point out FATAL is NOT a fetish/erotica game.)

I really have contempt for the people who keep making out human decisions and human behaviors to be "complex" when they are not. Most of the time, a war is just about killing people and taking their shit. Or not letting people kill you and take your shit.

.... I'm really worried some people here haven't learned about FATAL's character creation rules. I won't be able to sleep at night unless I correct this:

You know how dnd has six stats? FATAL has twenty. To calculate a stat you have to roll 10d100 / 5 - 1. So you have to roll 200 dice before you finish the basic part of character creation.

Now, consider, just consider, what doing this at a physical table in front of your friends would entail. If you have 10 one hundred-sided dice, you can just throw a fistful of them. If you only have 10-sided dice, you have to have them in a variety of color-matched pairs, or you'll have to roll 10 or 20 times. Carefully picking out the matching pairs and combining for the result of your roll.

Just no consideration for fun gameplay or how physically laborious it would be to play the game. Creating a character in FATAL without using a program to do it for you or otherwise cheating, can take three hours.

Supposedly the author is a statistician, but somehow hasn't figured out the hundreds of simpler ways to create a bell curve.

Also the character races all hate each other and very few can tolerate being in the same party as different races. Half of them eat people.

The world of Berserk is a doomed stupid crapsack world, but it's not near as stupid and crapsack as FATAL.

..... the real world might end up that way, though. President Marjorie will do her best, I believe in her~! ("FIGHTING!")

Okay but dude, if you can't do the feather dance you can at least crutch on the nest. Women are stuck trying to attract attention with just the feather dance, how many guys who aren't semi-homeless drug addicts ever say "Whoah, check out the house on her!" People see the attention photos and videos get and confuse those for the real humans they were taken from. People vastly underestimate the role personality and similarity to parents play in genuine attraction, which is why so many women feel utterly worthless inside and do things like this to themselves because they think it's the only thing guys will ever want them for:

I'm totally exaggerating and being unreasonable, there are surely thousands of eigosphere JP youtubers and I haven't even seen a fraction of them. My perspective is maybe a little different because I specialize in this stuff so little things annoy me that won't land for others. Like, I haven't even played Ghost of Tsushima yet even though everyone says it's legit good, because so much of it makes me cringe for historical reasons 99% of people wouldn't care about. Including me, I know if it were about a different theme I likely wouldn't be bothered in the slightest.

Japan has become a magnet for people looking to commoditize its people and scenery, and a lot of them are emotional infants. Any time I watch too much Japan stuff in a row the algorithm floods me with all the obnoxious "Would you date an American guy?" street interviewers and "Top 5 things to tell a Japanese girl" videos. But they're full of BS cherry picked quotes and generalizations which are designed to feed Western confirmation bias, because that's what feeds them views. And tons of them are Japanese people looking to cash in.

Then I get the "I'm a Japan expert because I live here" videos from people who I know have never studied it at any serious level. This is all the stuff that says "Japanese people are like X," and the call has always been coming from inside the house on that one. There are a ton of doofy Japanese people who say "We Japanese are like X" in media and every day life. Stop me if you've seen puffed up people who make clueless generalizations in your own culture before.

This conversation thread started with Dogen - Japanese language learning YT is full of scam artists. "How I learned Japanese in 6 months! Buy my system!" "How I learned Japanese just from watching anime! Like and subscribe!" You didn't, that's your incredible secret. Dogen gets respect from me for doing stuff like this: https://youtu.be/kuKpZAvafOA?si=Z1VtvX-onNg4nVAM There was a pronunciation pissing contest that broke out around a bunch of YouTubers a year or two back, and he sensibly sidestepped the whole thing with comedy. It starts out being about aiming for some perfect ideal that doesn't exist, but invariably makes accents a point of shame, which is more of that confirmation bias that the world doesn't need. But that's also why I mentioned his pitch accent thing, I don't think he intended it but when he started getting big there was suddenly conversation everywhere about "do I need it?" and people scorekeeping that sort of thing. I think it's fine on the surface because it's about clarity in communication, but it's got ugly undertones on both sides of the cultural divide that I don't like. And that's not bitterness, I say that as a guy who's unintentionally managed to fool people in Japan into thinking I was Japanese over the phone or by speaking behind them; I had good teachers and materials but none of it was about memorizing accents on every word, it's just as much about training your tongue muscles and rhythm in speaking as anything.

But the thing is that took years and years not because it's about any particular set of things to study, it's a series of serendipitous insights about the language and culture and your personal relationship to it that you can't just schedule, it's a byproduct of getting out there and really doing it with real relationships with real people. It's a hard climb that kind of never ends if your goal is something more serious than high school-targeted pop media, and it's still not simple even that is all you're aiming for. I've been around university language programs forever, and even 4th year university students don't graduate with N2 guarantees in their pocket, but mysteriously everyone behind a screen on the internet claims to be a 5th degree black belt at it. You know where I very rarely encounter non-Asians who are fluent in Japanese? Japan, that's where, and those are the people with the most practical motivation and direct environmental input and opportunities to practice. Sure plenty of them exist, but they're certainly not the majority.

In university almost everyone who's not 2nd generation Japanese or from a Chinese (kanji) or Korean (very similar grammar) language background quits after first or second year. Japanese is the most waitlisted course in the entire university, more than anything STEM or business related. Everyone wants to get in and watch anime or listen to j-pop or fuck someone who looks like their favourite porn star, especially STEM people. The 1st year course averages 300 students. 2nd year is 150, because of how many people drop out or flat-out fail the first year grind. Most degrees that would take Japanese as part of the major only require 2nd year, so after that most people who are remaining bail and the 3rd year course is only 25-30 students. 4th year is only 12-15 people on average who stuck it out the whole way, and that's the first place you're given real world adult media like newspaper articles to try and get through, that's not mastery-tier. If you're really talking about the whole thing - speaking, listening, grammar, pronunciation, reading and handwriting, Japanese really is that hard of a grind unless you have a very concrete reason to stick with it long term.

So yeah, there's a lot of stuff on YT misrepresenting itself even when it's not technically lying.

I understand where you're coming from, but there's a chicken and egg problem with addiction.

Are addicts generally sensory seeking (and unsatisfied) to begin with or did they train themselves to crave a chemical high. Maybe both?

I can't say, but I've got sympathy. Unfortunately, you can't help a true addict all alone or even as a family. That's where a social safety net has to kick in. I don't know how many can be saved, but I've got sympathy.

Urgh... that tracts. Fuckin' weebs.

A second language is an absolutely huge opportunity cost, for how much time and how many synapses it requires. If you really wanted to do something, you'd just do it. The last place I'd go to pick up a language is a classroom, just like how I own a power rack and hamster wheel instead of going to a gym. Why make something so grindy, even more laborious and difficult? Are these guys FATAL fans and hate making life easier on themselves?

They should play some Dangun Feveron to weeb out, instead...

The circumstances obviously differ. It's just a re-wiring of the reward system in our brains. Some thing feels really good, and other things don't feel as good, and a point can come where the feedback loop gets to the point where other things aren't just not very rewarding, but feel actively painful because they're distracting you from your utility goal.

It really is like being a paperclip maximizer. I guess it's impossible to understand without going through a bout of addiction of one kind or another in your life.

For me it was a stint of video game addiction in the later 2016-2017 times. I was really depressed by the Sanders movement failing that year, it got my hopes up and I had to watch in slow motion as the months after March slowly went by and everybody kept pretending Hillary was a shoe-in when the poll data said Trump had a slight edge the entire time. I considered Trump the lesser evil at the time (something that would have been 100% true if Obama didn't deploy ratfuck voltran the day before Sanders won the 2020 primary), so I eventually gave into the gaslighting and thought Hillary would win, because that'd be the shittiest outcome. I was mildly relieved that the polls weren't inaccurate and that telling your base not to worry and stay at home was indeed a suboptimal political strategy.

Suboptimal if your goal is to actually win.

Gave Granblue Fantasy a try, and yadda yadda. So I blame Sanders for trying to make the world a slightly better place. And Squeenix for never re-hiring those Final Fantasy 6 art+music guys to make a spiritual successor. Final Fantasy 6 was one of those games I wished never ended.

You just can't make yourself care about things you don't care about. I hope something like that sonic gizmo that massages people's brains out of depression works and isn't just another fluffed up venture capital grift.

(And I guess this might be why I want to push against the "Biden will pull this off, I believe in humanity" thing. But maybe other people are used to having their hopes crushed; I've rarely had to deal with it because I've so rarely felt it. ("Hope is for the hopeless." The doomed and powerless.) "Politicians are evil" is something I instinctively understood even as a dumb grade-schooler who didn't know anything about politics. There was just something impure and wrong about the way Bill behaved on the TV...)

A video game addiction would help me out with my backlog. :D

Apologies for the joking. I've never really been addicted to anything that I know of. I just wish I had time and energy to finish everything.

I want to build a mini half in the garden (backyard) again, so the backlog will only stack higher.

There are lots of different kinds of addictions, and some of them are much worse than others, and some people just seem to be fine and not have too much trouble with most drugs, even doing them on a regular basis.

It's some kind of genetic lottery thing where certain people are totally fucked if they go in too deep, and others just walk on water. But not with heroine. I've lost a few friends to that shit, and I'm glad I never messed with it.

Life's too short to worry about other people eating themselves? Or I guess if you really care about them, do you think they are actually happy? Maybe they are stuck in some kind of weird addictive behavior every bit as destructive as drugs?
I really have contempt for the people who keep making out human decisions and human behaviors to be "complex" when they are not. Most of the time, a war is just about killing people and taking their shit. Or not letting people kill you and take your shit.
I think you're conflating the reasons that people do things, and the greater historical reasons for a war or an event. Individual "human decisions" are obviously pretty base, but there are bigger events that factor into the course of history. If you remember Durkheim's Suicide, he talks about suicide statistics in a specific town at a specific time, and goes through all the reasons that the dead left for killing themselves. A good portion of them claimed it was because their wife left them or something similar, but the big event in the town that was common to all the suicide victims was their factory closing. So what's the reason they killed themselves? Was it because their wife left them, or because the factory closed?

The truth is more complex than that, because it depends on the question you are trying to answer. Are you trying to understand how to create an effective social net, or are you trying to understand the psychology of an individual?

But maybe I missed your point idk.

A ton of people, often liberals, like to use a disingenuous "it's too complex for us to understand/both sides have a point" argument to defend often monstrous public policy. The example you gave of a systemic impact isn't a lens they use to view the world with. That's more of the left's thing.

Bill Maher condescendingly telling Bill Burr he doesn't understand, "it's not his thing" is a typical example. Maher doesn't have a rational+humane explanation for why he thinks eradicating a country off the map is the correct thing to do, so he makes an appeal to authority: himself! He's just too smart for you dum-dums to understand his thinking.

There is no attempt at coherent explanations.

Thought Slime's current video on the crybullies is probably the correct action to take, there's nothing else you can really do by this point but dunk on them. The Canadian political leaders (from liberal darling Trudeau to orc darling Orc King) being furious at a protest group walking by a hospital, but not giving a single shit about every single hospital in Palestine being reduced to rubble... it's hard man.

Racism is definitely a part of the fascist's motivation to fash. As is earning an extra buck at someone else's expense. As it always is.

It's interesting watching so many high profile comedians slide through the liberal to conservative pipeline. Jerry Seinfeld being a shithead is especially appropriate, all is right in the world. Square peg fits into square hole.

I wish more celebrities were like Danny Glover and DeVito. Such a small handful of them that have any basic humanity left.

It's time to sue Activision and blame violent video games again? Interesting.

Since a bunch of white people brought this subject up, let's have a little talk about that, shall we?
“When a violent act is carried out by someone who doesn’t match the racial stereotype of what a violent person looks like, people tend to seek an external explanation for the violent behavior,” said lead researcher Patrick Markey, PhD, a psychology professor at Villanova University. “When a white child from the suburbs commits a horrific violent act like a school shooting, then people are more likely to erroneously blame video games than if the child was African American.”

Food for thought.

I'm holding back another rant here. One of the things that sets me off most are the overachiever fakes who want to treat Japanese like just another trophy to pick up on the side and then place on their oh-look-at-me mantlepiece. They never pay said cost but present an "anybody can do this" image. Some of them manage to fake their way into positions of authority or influence because they're good at selling that image to people who really want to believe it.
The last place I'd go to pick up a language is a classroom
That's actually the first place I'd tell anybody to go. For all the stuff I just wrote about people falling off, people who have an instructor keeping them to a schedule and providing a segmented structure instead of the entire towering edifice at once are going to get much further than the nigh-infinity number of people who decide they're going to solo it. So many of them give up the moment they hit ga, if they ever get that far. There certainly are highly self-regulated people who can solo the whole thing, but they're unicorns.

One thing I recall from yootoob street interviews in Japan were the number of people who said they'd like to know how to speak English as a skill. I know they're young people but.... ehhhh.... it's not as bad the oceans of fat people who "want" to lose weight (I infer this from all the weight-loss tricks and bullshit available in the markets), but it still reminds me of Maddox's rant about science.

Bernies Sanders always said "show me your budget, and I'll tell you what you really care about." If they're not spending a little time toward it, it's not really a goal of theirs. And I think it shouldn't be for the vast majority of people, unless they want to move to another country. English is the hardest language to master, after all.

I get your point of view of having an authority figure guide people and a social environment to keep them motivated, especially for normies, but I've always looked at learning new things as a very internal thing. And external interactions can be a hindrance. Hopefully the average college course exceeds the horror show of highschool language classes - which I'd put almost around par of watching anime with english subtitles (instead of japanese subtitles) in terms of uselessness. At least someone might learn a couple one-word phrases, like soogoy and saying "utah!" for good morning.

I really do shudder at the attempt of using words to teach words at such a basic level. People aren't LLM's, they need multi-modal context. Grinding out basic stock noun and verb memorization can't be done any better than with software. Constant, active use of the brain to try to recall words and connect them to images/video, and immediate constant feedback. Memorizing small chunks of things is trivial that way.

I'm sure there's nuance in grammar and pronunciation that a teacher could help with, but for some sad shithead who can't even say "potato" yet, it's kind of like giving a cat a primer on physics.

external interactions can be a hindrance.

One j-tuber, I think maybe it was Abroad in Japan, told this story of filling in for an english teacher or something. And was going around the room having the students take turns to attempt to speak a word out loud. When he got to this obnoxiously long word for some kind of French food or something, a word no native english speakers would know how to say, one of the quiet guys in the class got ambitious and took a stab at it.

He blundered it, as he was destined to from the start, and the class laughed at him good-naturedly. He got furious and yelled at everyone. I think about that dude sometimes, when it comes to social interactions. Good luck thinking about anything else all day if you happened to have been there at the time.

... since we're off topic on Japan (even if it is always on topic in shmups.system11), here's that Train Otaku video for everyone to watch again.

they're unicorns

One common odd social interaction I used to have in highschool, is someone would ask me "where did you learn to juggle?" And I told them I read a book. And then they'd laugh. They'd laugh at me, like that was the craziest, most unhinged shit they ever heard.

And I'd stand there completely baffled at their reaction. "They're laughing. I read a book and they're laughing" is what I would have thought, if that had been a meme at that time.

Juggling is really one of the greatest low effort - high reward skills someone can learn. Anyone can learn to juggle three things at a time in an afternoon. It's the exact opposite of learning a language.

... juggling five or more things though, that's gonna take some work and commitment.

overachiever fakes

..... hrm, perhaps they're who those achievement unlocked trophies we've been talking about lately are for....

A false unearned sense of accomplishment. Like a certificate that says you attended a 2 hour long "course" on degreasing pipes or whatever.

That reminds me.

There's speaking and then there's fluency. Outside of language courses, I never enjoyed English as a second language professors. No, I'm not racist. I can't fucking understand you and you can't fucking articulate. That's a problem, because you're supposed to be teaching me. Communication is at the heart of sharing understanding.

I imagine I would frustrate others just as badly, because basic language skills are not the same thing as fluency. Don't teach other people if you can't communicate with them.

Here in burgerland, the only second language you can organically learn and wield fluency is spanish.
