The issue is that the behavior of the rollers in the maze stages was incorrect. They were swerving diagonally instead of moving straight. For a while, ACA was the only place that had it fixed, but the issue was found and corrected more recently for the MAME and FPGA versions, as well. I think it was one of the MCU chips not being well documented or something along those lines.Steven wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2026 8:02 am
Anyway, the reason that I am here is because I have a question that I know someone knows the answer to. What is wrong with arcade Contra on the Anniversary Collection? I know that the emulation on it is messed up somewhere and somehow, and that ACA has either the first or the only accurate emulation of the game, but I don't know what the problem is or if it's something to even care about.

Thorough Research shows that two and a half minute games both satisfy players and also keep the quarters flowing.

learn the true power of ninjutsu as Hiryu stands in the same spot and mows down hordes of foes for minutes on end.
Well chaps, broke a generational bout of procrastination by uniforming the thread index.

Apologies it took so long, most disgraceful tbh. I have been on the road! This is perhaps fortuitous timing... because! R2RKMF Part VII: SONGS ABOUT FUCKING UP JUMPS (the sequel to R2RKMF Part VI: KINGBREAKER) be all over! Prepare For Next Stage: R2RKMF Part VII1: F##KIN ON THE ROAD

Ahem! Now, I was considering changing the index to per-author. But tbh, it made it less readable. Was nice n' homey, the aesthetic I've always preferred for this thread. But it was the same amount of text, just with games scattered all over. It was a bad idea imo!
So it's as-is, just consistently formatted instead of kinda all over the damn place. Feral moths ate my HDD containing like five years of indexed posts, but I wanna manually review the thread from 2020 onward, anyway. Actually, hell, might as well go from page 1. So will get it fattened up over the summer.

As always, corrections and suggestions welcome! Have a look if you will, I hope it's readable enough. Still a few kinks I wanna smooth out, like standardising platform annotations, and post descriptions. A few timeline snafus, too. And style things to do, like putting Faxanadu under [Dragon Slayer]. Will post templates for convenience in a bit. If I get taken out, somebody will have to index the next 400 pages. ;3 But for now, I gots to go out for a pint of milk >w>

I think the only Mario games I have ever beaten are the GBA versions of USA and World (might have done World on my SFC, but I forgot...) plus Odyssey. Then again I haven't played 80% of them, including 64, so that doesn't help. Sonic is and always has been way better anyway, so I really don't care lol

I've been meaning to get the Contra collection on PC since I got my Steam Deck but just didn't, even though I got all of the Castlevania Collections, and I am anticipating it showing up with a massive discount in the Steam sale that is going to happen in a few hours. I REALLY like M2's FC/NES color palette for some reason, so that's honestly about 70% of the reason that I want it.
BTW BIL it's a bit late, but congratulations on the baby. I haven't really been paying attention to much at all recently...
While I'm here, I trust everyone is at least aware of Vanillaware's upcoming port of Muramasa. I'd been thinking of getting a Japanese Vita copy for about two weeks prior to the announcement, but then I decided to watch the Japanese Nintendo Direct in case Tales of Eternia showed up (it did!) and Muramasa showed up too. Cool game from what I remember from a decade ago, and if nothing else you get lots of beautiful food because Vanillaware.
I'll return in a bit as Old_BIL and resume active duty from a position of great seniority, that's what I'm sayin (■`w´■)
Interested in that Murasmasa port! Missed out on its OG ver. I busted all my time on 1975~2005, for like the last twenty years. So most things after that are new to me. Time's a motherfucker, oof. Come to think of it, 90% of the older stuff was new too. Imgur's annoying me, I'd put the popcorn smiley here. Post reads like a whine but it ain't, I got no regrets.

Re Contra Anniversary Collection's emulation of the original: it seems to be a rare bungle by M2. Besides the 3D stage error Brian covered (shared by all emulations, official or unofficial, until Gotch's ACA ver), it also has hella slowdown. Stage 1 chugs like a motherfucker with Spread equipped. Feels bad man! I wondered if it was a variant board - Gradius's speed varies by region, per Gotch's ACA manual. But I've never seen board footage running so slow, in person or otherwise.
And the same collection's Super Contra is missing the voice samples, WTF! Still, plays great otherwise. Again, ACA one's perfect.
Still, Anniversary Collection is close enough to give you an idea of the series' coinop roots. I like having the ACA ones around for 1:1 accuracy, but I've a perverse fondness for these games. While they're both kinda goofy, their combo of woodchipper violence and ultra-compact runtimes has always won me over. Konami aim lag, what a torment! Why can't I quit you.

i cleared a loop of alien syndrome (jp) yay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmEpTU5L_TQ
i also found out a couple interesting things. so you can get a 1up from the ? panels if you have exactly 100,000 points, but getting one is worth 100 points as well, so you can't get multiple 1ups by staying at the same score and hitting up multiple ? panels. this is only true in the JP version though; in the US version you don't get any points for the 1ups, and given there's a lower threshold of ppl to rescue per stage in that version you can stay at 100K into stage 3, where there are 4 ? panels, and you can accordingly nab 4 1ups. Gavin Ward does this in his marp record of the US version that reaches 5-5.
thats not all though; as it turns out, you can apparently turn this into a life farming exercise if you want. even in stage 2, just stay at 100K, grab both 1ups, evade enemies and don't get any points until time runs out, then the stage resets and you're only down 1 life. then you can grab both of the 1ups again. it is very difficult and boring to do this, but it is possible! things that might break this are some kind of hidden limit on how many times you can let time run out, or, more likely, a low cap on extra lives. i don't really feel like finding out for myself as i'm more interested in the JP version anyway.

Well, lots of SFIICE and Raiden at the post office, that was pretty rad. And those three R2Rs are enough for a lifetime of decadence tbh. Probably too much too soon actually.

I swear there are times in Super Contra's second loop where you kill more enemies per second than any sidescrolling run/gun ever. Comparable to the furied shredder of Saigo no Nindou its very self. Also is that jeep from Jackal's end shot? I cleared that as a kid once. I found a safe spot on the right side of the screen for the tank. I got back there again and thought I had another clear in the bag. Turns out it wasn't a safe spot. Rngeezus just decided to smile that day.
Never got back there, had to give my buddy his nes back. Almost 40 years later that dude is moving into my late mom's house. With that console and that copy of Jackal.
